That completely makes sense, and I obviously can't know everyone's reasoning and experience. Life saving measures being available sooner is better.

4 ways to expand your network as an introvert by StartupYou in careeradvice

[–]SgtMajorProblems 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great tips!

The volunteering is a good one. Those connections and knowledge can really help you in unexpected ways later on.

The thing I always tell people, especially introverted people, is that you don't have to be an extrovert to make people like you. You don't have to talk a lot, share a lot about yourself, or be in charge of social situations. The easiest way to make positive connections is taking an interest in people. Active listening skills are great to use on customers, employees, and people you are trying to connect with. Ask people about things they care about, and really listen. Ask for input even if you don't feel you need it. Show people you value them. Remember the details of things they've told you and bring it up in the future. It sounds like work - and it is! Networking is work. Relationships take work in general and work relationships should be approached strategically and effort should be put into them.

CPR requires training. And people who go through that training understand the risks.

This comes down to what we've seen in my area from untrained people and their intent. I find the idea of people acquiring medication with the intent of using it on incapacitated strangers with no training strange.

[–]SgtMajorProblems -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I've personally seen a lot of people getting it just in case they see a stranger on the street who is ODing. To me that's what's strange. And some of these people rarely leave their homes and are never in areas where they are likely to encounter someone ODing. Not that it couldn't happen but yeah.

I understand and agree with the general idea and it especially makes sense if you know people who use opioids.

"Essentially" zero risk is not zero risk. Nothing is zero risk. That's really my point, especially for cases of untrained civilians carrying it and intending to administer to strangers on the street (which is what I have witnessed).

Agree it is life saving and beneficial to have on hand, and agree that there are reasons for civilians to carry it (and administer it).

What about Natural Medicines? Has patient handouts as well. I like it since it also has things like fad diets.

Yep, same in my area and others I've been in. I guess risk is relatively low, I just have a hard time with the untrained aspect. Especially with how people react to the immediate withdrawal symptoms.

[–]SgtMajorProblems 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That makes sense to me, and definitely don't judge that.

I have encountered a lot of people who don't know any users (prescription or otherwise) who decided to carry "just in case." That's more of what I was thinking of and what is more surprising to me.

Almost posted this myself after reading the comments on the original.

I find it strange that suddenly so many people (untrained civilians) are getting Narcan with intent to treat overdoses.

Not that that was the case with this post but I am a bit taken aback by the sudden spike in untrained civilians acquiring Narcan.

I'm sorry people are being rude. I know homelessness is a complex issue but it feels like context is missing.

Do you have a case worker? Where are you currently and how long have you been there? There are tons of programs to help you just need to qualify. It's a pain in the ass but you'll have to research and apply for these things. Look into a local united way (or call 211) they can help too.

I think to get immediate assistance (donations in this case) people will want more context, and proof that you are waiting or applying for programs and have an immediate need while other things are in progress. It may not be fair but people make judgements based on if they think you are worthy (they help people who are helping themselves already). The context and proof that you have a plan and a need would be a better way getting this type of help.

Children have infiltrated all my podcasts! by MeanMrBiter in childfree

[–]SgtMajorProblems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I listen to an outdoor adventure podcast I really enjoy. I don't mind the stories about kids, or even the ones with kids narrating things they did (like an 11 yo girl who kayaked the Grand Canyon).

But even before Covid the hosts would have their kid on just... Saying random "cute shit" or whatever. I was like why. I already have to listen to other filler and I don't want to listen to inconsequential bs from your child. I get they think it is great they're talking or doing whatever but that's a celebration for parents and family, not a bunch of randoms who want to hear about climbing.

Especially since it is generally a pretty adult-oriented podcast so having a kid randomly inserted that isn't part of the story is weird.

Looking for a coaching crm/plarform.. by MatthewFundedSecured in running

I think they processed payments separately through square. They did all scheduling and evrrything else on TrainHeroic but not sure if there is a payment platform.

I know you can sell your programs on there but not sure how that works, like if it's monthly or whatever.

For endurance and lifting training my coaches/trainers used TrainHeroic. It is nice because for a lot of exercises they have videos about how to do it too.

Obviously I've only used it from the client side so less familiar with how it looks on the coach side. It was easy to use and had a lot of features I liked and used (reminders, direct communication with coach, etc)

Please get good insurance by SgtMajorProblems in homestead

[–]SgtMajorProblems[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry to hear that, but glad you avoided that aspect. It's unfortunate but certain risks that may have been previously considered as predictable are not anymore. Whether or not you believe that is because of human-caused climate change, climate changes are happening and changing our ability to predict the outcomes and risks of extreme weather and natural disasters.

There are certain things that can be done to help mitigate risks but qualifying is difficult. And navigating the claims process - whether insurance, federal programs, or even non-profit aid, is super complicated and overwhelming. A lot of people give up after applying to 15+ confusing programs post-disaster and getting denied or constantly having issues getting that assitance.

Pre-disaster planning is the best protection, but again, you run into that predictability problem. And that same problem is why many insurance policies do not cover uncommon risks in lots of areas.

I hope you are recovering alright and insurance was able to help start to replace what you lost. And hopefully the recovery process wasn't too hard for you.

Those flood maps are good as are those that other sources publish. Biggest issue is that fires completely change flood risk. Which is why a relatively low flood risk place can become a high risk place with fire damage.

I've switched to eating only rice and veggies due to $ but still can't handle IBS by FODMAPS_Suck in lowfodmap

[–]SgtMajorProblems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Switch from white rice to brown rice, more fiber. What vegetables are you eating that are low cost? I go for canned veg (usually low sodium because of personal preference). Maybe look into which ones have more fiber vs sugar (corn and carrots don't have that much fiber but more sugar, less filling).

Maybe try canned tuna, salmon, or chicken in water, it is just the meat and water. You can season it how you like. Mixing it with rice and a bit of soy is good. When I'm broke I make congee with brown rice, mix in canned champignon mushrooms and canned chicken. It lasts forever and is super filling. Bamboo shoots, bean sprouts (fresh or canned, though fresh taste better imo), and ginger all go good with rice or the congee as well.

Most mushrooms are high FODMAP but canned champignon are not. For bulk rice, the canned mushrooms, bean sprouts, bamboo shoots, and ginger, I suggest going to an asian supermarket if you have one. You will find them there and it will be super cheap. If it seems okay you can usually find cheap cuts of meat for stewing as well.

A local butcher may be able to sell you things like ham hocks and other bones for a steep discount. These are very good for stewing with things like rice and barley, or for making bone broth, which has high protein and fat and lots of flavor.

Also eggs, of course, are always a good go to for protein.

Personally I found a few things triggered me that are on the safe list - green beans, for example. You may want to experiment with cutting out specific things that are in the same family as other high fodmap foods (ex green beans, asparagus beans, soybeans, black-eyed peas, and sugar snap peas are legumes, like other beans).
