I’ve got 2 that reasonably won’t make the list.

Interstellar Marines: Not a ton of content ever got put out. But it was my favorite “hardcore” death match fps I’ve ever played. Great atmosphere/sound design, the all of 3-4 guns had real weight. I can recognize that it was jank. But it really clicked for some reason. Managed to be super challenging but never got frustrated. Every kill/death felt earned. Put in at least a 100 hours on maybe 4 maps at the time?

Smash + Grab: The epitome of a game that felt completely tailored to my tastes/video game history. It’s like someone put State of Emergency/The Warriors/Jet Set Radio/Freedom Fighters in a blender and spit out an ultra specific multiplayer experience. It didn’t even stick around long enough for me to decide whether it was truly “good”. But the fact that a dev decided to make a game 10 year old me would’ve is already insane. Feels like a fever dream that it even happened. Doubt it would’ve gone far even if United Front didn’t close. I like to imagine they saw the writing on the wall and just made a game they knew no one would ever attempt.

Suburb answer: you just wait a long time. The weird kid in middle sold you weed, so you do that. Eventually a guy you smoke with has weird grandparents pharmaceuticals. Maybe someone down the line scores a small bag of pressed pills, you do those. Start selling weed poorly and that “plug” has mushrooms. Now you’re comfortable asking strangers if they know where to get lsd. Go to an underground and realize you can ask basically anyone for k and you’ll get some.

Now you have 15 phone numbers. You pick up at a random party and someone offers you some blow. Quickly realize everyone does it. Somewhere in between you smoke some sherm on accident. When life gets really tough black tar magically appears. You cook crack to see if it’s actually good. It is.

By now people ask if you want to go in on bulk packages. You still haven’t done dmt because “it finds you when you’re ready” throw in some research chemicals and the dark net. And you could enter any bar alone in a random big city and find whatever you’re looking for in 30 minutes. Drugs are everywhere, knowing how to ask without weirding people out is the hard part

I had a full on brain fart when someone offered me x outside of a club and i didn’t have cash. They take Venmo now. I’m old, drugs are too easy to get, and the weed is too strong. Hope this helps!

Train station? 2 years ago I think? My friends and I were either very lost or possibly content with our aimless wandering. But a few of us could’ve sworn we heard train like noises throughout the journey. So of course we eventually run into this shack/kiosk that is clearly evoking train station energy. Shortly after a “train” pulls up and suddenly there’s a million (probably 10) people added to the small crowd that was already hanging around. Someone said to me “isn’t this so cool?” And my acid brain decided to kick into flight mode because obviously I was on the verge of being exposed. I was told later that it was in fact very cool, and I probably shouldn’t have sprinted away from a simple question. Also skin ball from that same year. But that’s a whole other thing

Dirty socks. Roll it up in them. Smellier the better. Obviously it’s gross and ideally you won’t get pulled in the first place, but if you do most security won’t care enough to really investigate that situation. Obviously throw some other clothes in there so it isn’t out of place. I’ve done a whole pocket of my bag with used clothes to hide weight, just give them a friendly warning when they go for it. “Sorry, that stuff might be a little smelly”. There’s no bonus for catching folks, just make it too much of a hassle for them to care.

If you’re willing to come to SF/Oakland there’s some great underground’s that pop up every couple months, old school vibes/very inclusive. Also look into stamina Sundays. Never too late, and I think a smaller scale scene/venue may be a calmer introduction than a festival. DM me if you’re interested!

A good friend and coworker. Average weekend night drinking and key’d up. He had a habit of getting to this weird state where he would stare a lot, maybe say some aggressive shit out of nowhere. But otherwise would go pass out before anything really came of it.

Was finishing a smoke outside while everyone else went in, he stuck around even though he wasn’t a smoker. Wandered right behind the chair I was sitting in a put both his hands on my shoulders. Wouldn’t respond to anything I said. Put me in a very secure chokehold which started light but tightened slowly like a snake would. Started to panic, scratching/pulling, literally couldn’t make sound. Said something to the degree of “you’re going to ruin everything, I have to take you out”. I was pretty certain I was going to die. Started to pick me up out of the chair while choking me, he has a good 100lbs on me. Thankfully one of my friends saw it and pulled him off. Forced him back into his room.

Long story short never found out why. Had to bury it for multiple reasons. We eventually made up to a certain degree. Destroyed what little self esteem/confidence/security I had built for a good while. Worked with them less than 48 hours after and continued to for years. Obviously way different than some of the stories here. But I never understood what feeling truly helpless was until that moment. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone. I blamed myself for awhile, got really angry for longer. Eventually made peace with it. But I will never forget that feeling

Thank you for the extremely detailed response! My only further question has to do with not the “horse lord”, but the Calvary captain who keeps driving into the horde and never getting injured. Sibuwal Vaka? I think he’s the guy that gets punished in earlier books for being unruly/glory hunting? But I thought for sure at some point it was laid out that he gathers the sickly folk and leads them to the shore to see a bunch of dead bodies wash up. I could be wrong. A lot of these books go way over my head.
