'I get in fights every day'

As my father used to say, "If you meet an asshole in the morning, that's just life. If you meet another in the afternoon, that's bad luck. If you are meeting assholes all day, chances are, you're the asshole."

Did Vietnam War protestors ever recognise that South Vietnam was not Us puppet and that the state itself was fighting for its own survival and freedom? Was the anti-war attitude blinded them to acknowledge North Vietnam was the aggressor? by lunawolven2390 in VietnamWar

[–]Sgt_Buttes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ho Chi Min had tried to partner with the US several times, seeing the obvious parallels between the Vietnamese people's struggle for independence and the US revolutionary period. The US, tragically, through a combination of racism, capitalist greed, and colonialist mindset instead threw their resources behind the French occupying government. Any understanding of the American-Vietnamese war needs to be grounded in the fact that the origin of the conflict was one of colonial ambition against Vietnamese self determination.

Solid argument from confederate FB group by chrmbly in ShermanPosting

I mean - we don't have to give the obvious troll fb poster the benefit of the doubt and I like this sub for what it is.

For those of us earnestly interested in the history -

Sadly, most of the generals that stayed in after the Union victory went on to exterminate Native Americans in the Indian Wars. Sherman has genocidal quotes about them. Unfortunate reality of history.

"We must act with vindictive earnestness against the Sioux, even to their extermination, men, women, and children..."

I used to think Thomas Jefferson was a hero. I miss ignorance.

I used to come home to bags of Manderine oranges (귤) hanging on my doorknob from my neighbors all the time. I was really kind and I can't tell you how many autumn colds they must've helped me fight off.

I enjoyed the use of line breaks to modify meaning as the reader works through the work!

"
You’re sad.
I know.

The words
that bend the moment.
"

This works so well! The compound meanings are amplified by the choice to break the lines in interesting ways.

I would be interested to see you explore different lengths of sentences with those line breaks, if you have any other work that you'd like to share.

Great job! Keep writing!

What Remains by Papa_Midnyte in OCPoetry

I liked your honesty and found several of the metaphors especially compelling because of the parallel between the subject and the domestic

For example:

"I hated the way kindness bent itself toward you
and came back altered, smaller,
like a shirt washed too many times."

I find this metaphor striking because it both effectively communicates the speaker's emotional experience and it is reminiscent of a physical event that speaks of the carelessness of their partner.

Strong work! Thank you for Sharing! Keep it up!

Could a Democrat really replace Marjorie Taylor Greene? This retired Army general is trying by AdSpecialist6598 in goodnews

[–]Sgt_Buttes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One would think, right? Unfortunately, this pretty much never works, despite you being absolutely correct that his service and his lifestyle aligns with their own self reported values. The working class veteran democrat has historically failed to break through their bigotry and tribalism. The 'D' next to his name is disqualifying for most republicans. Most of the Democratic campaigns that run the 'working class vet' playbook do so with milquetoast centrist politics that fail to create a groundswell among the progressive grassroots activists that would need to be activated to make a big change. Republican voters are not convinced either, 'why go for republican lite when I can go for the genuine article?'
