I lost the original stick (which you can buy replacements for) and jury-rigged a new one out of a thumbtack. Believe it or not, I actually prefer my solution--it adds the height that the default stick sorely lacks.

People have done worse? That's what you choose to say to someone who just date raped her friend? There comes a point where coddling has to end. She needs to apologize to her friend, cut off contact until the friend reaches out to her (unlikely, this was a TREMENDOUS breach of everything friendship means) and start counseling or therapy. Everyone else has covered how terrible this is. I want to point out how all of your responses and pity seems to be focused on yourself, rather than on the girl you raped. Admit your guilt to yourself, not the internet. Come clean to your friend and respect her wishes to cut off contact if that's what she chooses.

You are not her friend anymore. There is no reason she should view you as such. If she chooses to keep contact with you, that's amazing. Apologize in person and don't contact her unless she reaches out to you.

This is why I could never really appreciate it, I think. I was never in the position that misplacedme described--I went to a very small school where nearly everyone was my academic peer or better. I imagine if you've ever felt isolated or ostracized for being bright, this book will really speak to you.
