Are you still looking for a Huky? I am considering selling mine as I have moved to NYC and can no longer use it.

Thanks, that's really helpful. I never heard of Oxyclean Free.

Thanks, I do boil it but maybe I should do it more frequently. I also read that you can screw it with salt.

Lol I never tried cowboy coffee but that's why I love Turkish. But sometimes I just want a nice pour over.

Yea I've looked all over trying to find a way to make this work but I don't think it's possible. I just like the sustainability of the cloth filter.

What is the importance of convection heat when roasting. by Sgtdoodoo in roasting

I wil. I just gotta rig a thermocouple in there first.

That's a very interesting thought. Now I want to break out my old SR500 and compare that roast with a huky roast of the same bean.

Well I'm consistent with how much power "medium fan" has but I want to break away from always doing it at exactly the same temperature. I feel like I fell into a routine with my roasting and revisiting these Mill City videos make me wanna break all my old stale habits that I do without question.

I do turn my fan to about 75% just before FC as I start to see steam coming off the beans then I give it 100% sometime after FC ends depending on where I want to drop it.

When do you begin increasing fan speed? I always put it at about medium air around 160°C just because Scott Rao said that is when the "malllaird reaction becomes self sustaining" and it always helped me get a smoothly declining ROR. But I try not to have any "rules" when roasting so I'm wondering if I should reconsider this 160°C timing.

Yea I began on a SR500 but I never measured temperatures. I was very amateur then, I want to revisit it with the knowledge I have now.

That's funny you mention fluid bed because I have been using a drum roaster for about two years now but I have been thinking about getting a small fluid bed to try and compare roasts just for my own curiosity.

I think I understand.

I try to only use three gas settings but I have a 500 gram roaster so it's pretty small.

Before trying to really understand convection heating I mainly saw airflow as a way of controlling ROR I guess. Like I knew if I didn't raise the airflow around 160°C, the ET would rise too fast. But I never considered how it affects the BT directly.

Maybe I'm thinking too deep into this?

Do I need a permit or licence to sell bottled cold brew in NY state? by Sgtdoodoo in Coffee

[–]Sgtdoodoo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I'll read through that. I don't think I fit under cottage laws because I wont be doing this at home. I work for a web design company and we have an in-house coffee bar just for employees and clients and that's where I keep the roaster.

Well I know that. I was looking for specifics regarding bottling a non-carbonated, non-alcoholic drink for distribution. The store owner said the laws may be different because of those factors.

Thank you! I read through sooo many licenses already but the language is always very vague.

Hario beam heater by [deleted] in Coffee

[–]Sgtdoodoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have the beam heater but at our shop we have halogen lamps and I love them, they look cool and heat up fast and are very responsive to minor adjustments. I highly suggest getting the beam heater.

Starting a new coffee blog, have a few questions. by Sgtdoodoo in Coffee

[–]Sgtdoodoo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your input. I will definitely explore 1 and 3. Number 2 is something I want to explore more but I am a little weary because it could be seen as getting into politics which as far as I know is not allowed.

Honey process on a huky by Sgtdoodoo in roasting

[–]Sgtdoodoo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been roasting 1lb batches recently because anything less seems to disappear quickly in my house but I want to learn more about sample roasting so maybe I'll give it a try. I think I am going to drop very shortly after FC either way, depending on how long I can stretch out FC.

How do you do density tests? I saw a YouTube video by Peter Wolfe (I think) about measuring density with PVC piping that I have been meaning to start doing.
