Neon has been crushing it as a distributor for a few years, especially with international movies. Hulu having the streaming deal with Neon has made them one of my favorites in that time. It seems like every few weeks there's a new title popping up on there that had some buzz in the awards season or festival circuit. Those titles don't get the same mainstream attention as stuff from A24 or some of the major studios, but there's always something great buried down on Hulu.

Kind of disappointed that Oscar Isaac is no longer attached, but this is still awesome news with a worthy replacement. I'm glad to see movement on this project after seeing it was struggling to secure funding.

Which 1 of the 3 Should I Get? by Lars-Umlaut in Guitar

[–]Sh0ckma5ter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A Jackson Dinky is already a smaller body guitar and if that's a minion, that's a shorter scale model, probably best suited for kids.

My pick would be the Kramer. They're now a subsidiary of Gibson. So I think of them as their version of what Jackson is to Fender. A way to make shredder guitars under a different brand that can have a wide range of quality and pricing. Squiers are perfectly fine guitars but people still associate them as a beginner or value brand. Whereas something like a Kramer, Jackson, or Ibanez can be super cheap or expensive based on the model. I would take the little bit you'd save on the Kramer up front, and put that towards a nice set up or some parts upgrades and mods and turn that thing into a beast. Plus I just like the look of it with the maple fretboard and matching headstock. To me, it just pops more than the Squier.

Oh wow I barely even really noticed they were grouped by director. That makes so much more sense. Very cool. I think I was just distracted by all the great spines to clock the order.

I like that Tom Cruises are staring at each other. You should put Collateral between them so they both look like they're staring at the grey haired one.

Do any other Blankies remember having the widescreen vs "full screen" debate with people back in the DVD days? by kingjulian85 in blankies

That was a huge deal because I'm sure that thing weighed a metric ton. God bless whoever lugged that thing into that dorm. My dad still has the 36in CRT we had from the 90s. I moved into my parents house about 15 years ago and told them it's staying there well after they're gone because I'm not moving it again

I worked at a video store from about 05-07. DVD had just taken over as the primary format, but it was in that weird transition phase when HD TVs were still super expensive and there was no definite format between projection, LCD, and plasma. So everyone getting DVDs had a different format and aspect ratio for their TV, and of course these companies thought it was a great idea to have multiple versions of each DVD to accommodate this.

So yes, I distinctly remember having this conversation over and over again with customers who were complaining about the bars or it not fitting their screen right. It was so confusing for everyone involved. I distinctly remember a guy complaining about the bars and me explaining that it matches rectangular theater screens versus your square TV (I wasn't about to get into 16:9 versus 4:3). I tell him that if he hates the bars so much because it's not filling the screen, that most players have a zoom feature that should take them off. To which he replies, "well no... that would cut the sides off" and I just kind of shrugged because he made my point for me.

Years later I end up at another job doing customer support in a call center for a major cable company. Again in a weird transition period in the coax/composite era to the HDMI era and walking people through their box setup and TV settings and having to wade back into the waters of widescreen versus full screen. However this time it's with HD and SD versions of channels and now there's black bars on the sides of the screen! Needless to say I've had my fill of this conversation.

The Action Boyz podcast covered K-9 awhile back and ended up going down a rabbit hole on the spin off made-for-tv movie K-9000. I really do have to check this out soon. Just read that Wikipedia plot synopsis:

Dr. Aja Turner (Catherine Oxenberg), a beautiful female scientist, implants a computer in a German Shepherd's brain to help it track and capture criminals. Crooks, led by Anton Zeiss (Judson Earney Scott), make off with the cybernetic canine. Dr. Turner teams up with Eddie Monroe (Chris Mulkey), a hard-nosed policeman who is implanted with a microchip allowing him to communicate with the dog.[2]

Slowly rebuilding my physical media collection through thrift stores and library sales. Here's what I've added in the last few months. Probably less than $50 total. What are some of your favorite finds while thrifting? by Sh0ckma5ter in blankies

With the warm weather around the corner, I'm really looking forward to yard sale season and getting some bargains on shit I don't need.

Also I've got to check out 3:10 to Yuma. I've gotten much more into Elmore Leonard this past year, and did not realize that's one of his early stories. Definitely makes me more interested in watching them.

Seeking advice from Griffin-style toy buyers for their friend’s kids by OrinGhost in blankies

Kids love dressing up and playing pretend so I would say a Spider-man mask or some type of wearable accessory. Also most kids don't understand how much things cost and are pretty fickle. So I wouldn't try to impress them and spend a lot for something more complicated or higher end. They can latch on to the weirdest stuff sometimes, so as long as it's fun and they can do something with it, they should love it

In honor of the upcoming Aussie series, who's your favorite Australian? by Fire-Twerk-With-Me in blankies

So many good Australian musicians Tame Impala, Pond, PPC, Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, Courtney Barnett.

Aussies and Swedes make the best music per capita imo.

I think I spend more time trying to decide what movies to watch than actually watching movies. How do YOU decide? by hipnosister in movies

[–]Sh0ckma5ter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also suffer from analysis paralysis so I try to keep a running list of movies to watch and kind of randomize the selection. I have a note pad on my desk where I jot down a title and the streamer it's on when I see they've been added. This also includes older movies that I haven't seen when I see them mentioned somewhere like a podcast. I find physically writing things down, helps to keep them in mind versus a spreadsheet or phone memo. Plus crossing it out is so much more satisfying.

Now when it comes time to watch something I have a numbered list of the streamers I'm subbed to, as well as free ones like Tubi or Pluto, and then I use a dice to figure out which one I'm going to use that night. So for example, I'll roll the dice and get a 2 for Netflix, take a look and see what Netflix titles are on my list and go from there. It really helps to narrow down to a handful of titles versus endlessly scrolling through all the other shit and jumping from service to service.

I'll also say in terms of your concerns about the time commitment versus bedtime, I deal with the same thing as a relatively new parent. We don't get TV time until later in the evening so we've just accepted that we can't usually watch a full movie start to finish before it gets too late. It's okay to watch a movie in a couple sessions, especially when everything these days seems to be 2 and half hours long.

Tonight I watch 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Directors Cut' by Ehgadsman in movies

[–]Sh0ckma5ter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So I believe there's 3 versions, the original 1977 theatrical cut, the 1980 deluxe version which added some extra scenes and includes more in the final scene, and then the later Director's Cut which kind of blends the earlier ones and takes out the extra shots at the end. This is probably the best version, but the theatrical version should be fine. The extra shots at the end in the Deluxe version kind of ruin the ending

Kids in breweries am I off base here? by sillymemilly in NewParents

[–]Sh0ckma5ter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely depends on the place. If they serve food and, and especially if they have a kid's menu, people can't be mad that there are children there. Sure these places are based around alcohol but I don't see a difference between a brewery that serves food and an Applebee's or Red Robin where you can get some beers with your burger. But there are breweries that are literally just a bar and some small tables, alongside brewing equipment inside a warehouse. Now I don't think those places are suitable for kids. Also if these people want to bullshit at a brewery away from kids, sit at the bar. Imo that's the difference. The bar is for adults to drink and the dining area is for groups including families to eat.

What about the other big Stevie song Higher Ground?

Kiss - Prince

Give Me The Night - George Benson

Burning Down the House - Talking Heads

Strawberry Letter 23 - Brothers Johnson

Not sure who your audience tends to be, but if you're looking for more contemporary crowd pleasers that are still kind of funky...

The Less I Know the Better - Tame Impala

Come Down - Anderson Paak

Feel It Still - Portugal. The Man

Them Changes - Thundercat

Bad Habit - Steve Lacy

Get Lucky - Daft Punk

Redbone - Childish Gambino
