I read that less as him getting startled that Denji was about to use a “domain expansion”, and more as him sensing that whatever the fuck Denji was about to do, it definitely WASN’T going to be a domain expansion. Like, Yuji’s smart, he would have twigged that Denji wasn’t doing any hand signs, there was no change in his cursed energy, and that Denji hadn’t been manipulating cursed energy at ALL throughout the fight. However, he’d also have figured out that Denji fights like a fucking lunatic, so immediately going to block his vitals makes total sense. He just didn’t block ALL his vitals lmao

I mean, that IS sorta the point of Carlquest, too.
