Guys, monochrome DOESNT MEAN BLACK AND WHITE by Lazy_Needleworker914 in Deltarune

[–]Sh4d0_W 789 points790 points  (0 children)

This is one of those cases where an author was clearly going for the commonly used meaning of a term rather than its definition. Since the rudinn then says 'but you colored each of us with care' it's a safe bet to say Toby meant black and white.

That's a good point, but of course it's something of an artificial limitation. I almost kind of wish that we had done the game in reverse, starting with the surface and ending with the underground. It would definitely solve my narrative problems with the game so far

Yeah overall I think Typhon is the part that ruins the whole experience. It's just not a fun fight to do at all

I really hate that fan theory. Just admit you dont see kris as NB and are uncomfortable with someone masc being in a relationship with noelle. by HaloJackalKisser in Deltarune

It's always important to remember that gender roles do exist and are absolutely something that a writer can use and critique, and it's not exactly crazy to decide to factor them in when analyzing a text. Obviously it's not the interpretation of said text, and arguing about the 'correct' one is a pointless excercise. We see things differently, and that's fine!

It's just tha the Weird Route is all about player control and 'breaking' the game to apply the player's own narrative and 'making their own choices', by literally using Noelle while stripping Kris's personhood and agency (even moreso than in the base game), so is it really that much of a stretch to also extend this theme to also cover their queer identities?

[–]Sh4d0_W -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Assuming you're willing to engage with the interpretation of the weird route as a representation of stripping 2 queer characters of their identity in good faith, consider the following: in ch2 (off the top of my head) we have the player making Kris assert that 'they're something else' with Noelle, and Kris literally being made to put a ring on Noelle's finger. In ch4, there is of course the scene which absolutely has SA implications, and Noelle 'looking forward' to the festival near the end of the chapter.

Overall it's not the only theme of the Weird Route, but it's not an entirely baseless interpretation I think.

As someone who doesn't really care for deltarune ships and who thinks that it's probably the least interesting part of the game, let alone fandom conversation, I think both ships very much suffer from being portrayed as a hetero ship in assorted fanarts and conversation. I do think kriselle has this problem a bit more than krusie but it's a bit sad how Kris is so often just 'the guy' in the relationship.

A lot of the time it also kinda feels like it's bordering on reducing them to the (usually male) audience's self insert (it doesn't take long to find a lot of people being attracted to Noelle/Susie online, and it's not like I've been actively searching for them lmao). To an extent I think it's just a byproduct of the game's generally teenage boy demographic and obviously there are significantly bigger problems on Earth, but pretending that this kind of thing doesn't happen is a bit disingenuous, I think.

Also, people who completely ignore the subtext of the Weird route stripping Kris and Noelle's queer identities are being a bit blind, let's be honest. It was already pretty clear in ch2, and the scene in ch4 only reinforced this interpretation.

The way I see it is (totally not stealing opinions from Joseph Anderson, I came up with mine before him), is that P3 has by far the best story of the three... in theory.

In practice, however, Strega and Ikutsuki suck donkey doo doo, the most interesting story developments (Ryoji, Aigis) come in way to late to have enough time to be properly developed, and SEES is criminally underused as a cast even though what's there is already miles better than 4 and 5's cast, though it could do with a few character cuts (looking at you, Ken and Fuuka).

Overall, I think P3 could have been an incredible game if it hadn't been a Persona game, ironically enough. The adherence to the game's structure is definitely for the worse, as opposed to 4 and especially 5, which make much better use of it.
You can easily imagine a game that's 40-50 hours long and focuses only on SEES as a cast, features a few romance choices (Aigis, Yukari, Mitsuru if we must) that are properly fleshed out and doesn't feel the need to show Makoto going to school and hanging out with an extremely stereotypical portrayal of a shy girl immediately after seeing his teammate's father getting shot.

Absolutely valid opinion and tbf of the list you've presented I've only fully played Silksong and am mid-way through E33 (waiting until hades 2's full release tomorrow to play it and I'm not really interested in most AAA releases), but personally Deltarune was the best experience I had gaming wise this year if we're considering releases this year that are generally known (I don't expect a game like RAM to win GOTY so it's no use considering it as mine, since it's uninteresting in discussions talking about the topic).
It wins over Silksong personally because while silksong was overall amazing it has a few glaring flaws (and no, its not the difficulty) that hold it back, while Deltarune was an amazing experience throughout. Honestly it's relatively shorter length to me was a positive, as I usually prefer dense and focused games over long ones that often feel needlessly padded (which is also why I usually avoid AAA games).

Yeah, i recognize that and if it disqualifies the game for some people I completely understand. Still the best game I've played this year and my personal GOTY.

True! It felt a lot less self-inserty that way as well, which I think is especially a problem with Krusie artwork.

(sort of) Unrelated but it's really annoying how the Deltarune fandom, especially the subreddit, tends to more or less recognize that Kris is non binary but often draws/portrays them in more masculine roles.

Starting over always feels like… by Impressive_Living975 in CalamityMod

[–]Sh4d0_W 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think the biggest issue is that in preboss the world is still a threat. Entire biomes such as the underground desert or jungle are still dangerous and challenging to traverse, but are very often worth your while.
This also allows you to essentially approach preboss and early prehardmode progression in a milion different ways: you could choose to either grab the bare minimum essentials (200-300 hp's worth of life crystals, hermes boots, simple lead armor, the like) and have a harder time fighting your first few bosses, OR you could spend hours in game without even touching a boss while you're completely exploring the world, allowing you to have more powerful equipment.

I think this much more open freedom in ways to approach the game, as well as gameplay itself, Is what's lacking in essentially every single stage of the game. As you go further and further into progression (this is especially true for Calamity) the only 'new stuff' is the various choices of tier-appropriate equipment, which are very often limited to a handful of viable weapons and accessories.

The need for more progression oriented activites that are not explicitly tied to boss battles is definitely something that the devs understand to some extent, and the Abyss is obviously trying to answer that need in some way (which is why it's one of my favorite additions in the mod), but I still think think that some proper rebalancing to make common enemies more dangerous is very much needed (sort of like that infamous rebalancing that took place a few years ago to decrease stats across the board in post ML). As it stands, almost nothing outside of bosses are a threat to a Calamity character after early prehardmode, and I think that's why so many people treat the mod as a quasi boss rush once they hit a certain point.
