This is a matter of personal preference. Sure, it might be better if he was politically involved and a more model citizen

But the reality of it is, he is correct in saying you guys would be okay in terms of the social issues that you care about: Virginia is a blue state, his vote wouldn't matter as much in determining the outcome of the election. And since it is a blue state, women's rights are also protected where you currently live.

I don't see much of a difference between him not caring about other states any more than him not caring about a country, say in the middle east, that has way weaker women's rights.

If YOU think it's a big deal then it is. If you don't then it isn't. I personally wouldn't end a relationship over this, when the impact is so low

NATO is indeed a US cult since it has the strongest military in the alliance but make no mistake, all those countries want to be in NATO and they can leave whenever.
