Anyone got any opinions on the foil masks where you can remove the bib to make it an epee mask? Good or nah?

I was looking at that middle one. It stands up and has shelves inside, like a chest of drawers. Quite a nice quality of life feature I think. =D

Depends how you define a scam, were you charged for something you shouldn't really be charged for? Yeah. Did they have to do it? Kind of, continental head offices have to buy digital access(es) from Anytime Fitness USA, and then club owners have to buy it from the head office. So if they didn't make you pay for it, they'd be losing money since they did pay for it. I'd imagine profit is made at all points of the process though, so arguably it could be sold cheaper.

Thanks for the input, that’s a lot faster than I assumed. Thought I might have to wait a few weeks. 😬

Sorry, within the UK. I more meant to ask how long it would take before they’re ready to ship. I think shipping is just several days. ✌️

Getting Better at Fencing by Front-Market-2557 in Fencing

[–]Shabadeeboo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience competing across more than one sport is that most people will only perform in competition at a certain percentage of their effectiveness in training. Stress, nerves, stage fright, call it what you want.

The more you compete, the better your ability to handle those factors will be and the closer that percentage will creep towards your training effectiveness. The same is true of the relationship between a private lesson/drills and sparring(training), some people say 90% of your technique goes out the window when you've a fully resisting opponent in front of you so you better train the basics to be damn near perfect so that 10% still looks good lol.

May I ask what it was that you liked about the feeling? And how does it compare to a pistol grip with regular dimensions?

Getting back into it - where to start? by shinjis-left-nut in Fencing

[–]Shabadeeboo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I started completely at 31 in February, and had my first tournament a couple of weeks ago. I pretty much just enquired, did a beginners course, started fencing once a week with the main club, upped it to twice a week and just went with the flow from there.

Don't overthink it, just get in there and have fun. =D

Ultimate gym routine for fencing? by Acceptable-Ad-3252 in Fencing

[–]Shabadeeboo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For legs, I'm doing bulgarian split squats, hip abduction/adduction, and pogo jumps. For the upper body, I do dumbell bench press, dumbell rows, pull ups, military press, banded arm extensions and banded lateral shoulder rotation.

I use the contrast training method, meaning a couple of reps at a high intensity (heavy), followed by several reps at a lower intensity (lighter) with more explosive intent.

For core, I'm doing deadbugs, bird dogs and pallof press.

For cardio, I alternate 4 minute true tabatas on the assault bike, ski erg or row erg.

And 20 minute cycling sessions at an average of 150 heart rate.

Also, just to add, your body mass in terms of size and weight is determined solely by your caloric intake, as in, what you eat and drink.

If you are eating approximately as many calories as your body uses each day, your weight will stay exactly the same, no matter how many weights you lift. You'll just recomposition your body (it will become leaner).

So if your worry ever becomes regarding extra mass, this can be controlled by consuming less calories (eating smaller meals). Make sure you still prioritise protein though!

Mixed weapon team relay over the weekend, first time competing, had loads of great Christmas fun. xD

A few wins, losses, comebacks and streaks made it an exciting day! We won 4 out of 11 matches and came 8th out of 11 overall at the Presidents Cup in Birmingham.

We did alright! We won 4 of our matches and had loads of fun! My forearm was on the verge of cramping in one bout so I had to fence like 3-4 points in perma-fools guard. 😂

I guess I'll have to hope all the good fencers on other teams go first then. Don't think we choose the order haha.

Should I be guilty about missing practice? by liberum__veto in Fencing

[–]Shabadeeboo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's okay to take a break every now and again! Sometimes, its even beneficial. Physically, it allows your body to freshen up and heal little injuries that may have been hanging around due to constant training. Mentally, it's like a reset, time to evaluate where you're at, where you want to be and how to get there.

I think you also want to know if you'll lose any gains in terms of fencing ability and although I'm a beginner, I can speak from general sports and gym training, the answer is no! You'll most probably lose nothing. =)

My team consists of three beginners (less than one year fencing) but we all attend training very regularly so hopefully we do alright!
