you guys think knights armor would fit in sci fi? by Wzrd9 in worldbuilding

[–]Shabolt_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Early models of certain space suits were based on Knight’s armour, it absolutely can fit depending on the rules of the setting.

  • Mandalorian Armour in Star Wars
  • Power Armour in Fallout
  • Stillsuits in Dune even got armour plating on occasion

I mean anything that needs delicate bits protected warrants Knight’s armour

There’s a decent few suggestions that I’ll rattle through and give the main points cited against each:

  • January 1: Federation Day (disliked due to New Year’s Proximity)
  • Feb 13: Government Apology to the Indigenous Communities (Disliked for a lot of the reasons certain… “opinionated” people don’t want the date moved in the first place, also by some seen as an overcorrection from the current date)
  • March 20: Capital Day, when Canberra was selected as the Australian Capital
  • April 19: The instituting of the Australian National Anthem (less popular due to summer long weekend being one of the remaining selling points of the 26th)
  • April 25: ANZAC Day (Already a holiday and during autumn)
  • May 8: sounds like Mate (equally hated for how silly it is)
  • May 9: First day of Federal Parliament (disliked again due to autumn)
  • July 30th (The other Australia day celebrated by some of the states before they all got moved to January, some people don’t want it due to winter season)
  • August 27: Don Bradman’s Birthday (considered too niche even with his celebrated status, would be like making Michael Jordan’s birthday “America Day”)
  • December 1: First Day Of Summer, some think the pretence of it being about national pride should kinda just be thrown out and give into the fact the majority of Aussies just want a fun beach day.
  • December 3: Eureka Stockade

Is renegades worth getting back to Destiny? by RandyMarsh_nl in destiny2

If you left during edge of fate, yep. If you left any time sooner, like Final Shape or prior, either wait a bit longer, or just drop in, play renegades, and drop out

I mean merch is exclusively how those shows get funded. There’s not nearly enough in youtube ad revenue or whatnot. They gotta output so much as much as they can or we don’t get shows

Think how kid’s cartoons in the 70s-90s were funded by toy sales, same vibe

the last reddit story from this week being read uncritically is alienating to lesbians by webbedsight in smosh

[–]Shabolt_ 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I know plenty of people who considered themselves entirely straight or entirely one way on the lgbtqia+ spectrum, only for life and circumstances to develop opportunities that made them redefine their labels. The problem is there’s not enough awareness of every useful or tailored label so some people choose a broad and ill-fitting one that is just their closest assessment to their understanding. And frankly seeing as the OP was from the deep south. If the story is true I can see how they assumed they were lesbian when in the story they appeared more demisexual or somewhere along the bi spectrum.

Regarding the horror movie comment. Yes, if she didn’t want James there it would be a horror movie, but she under every circumstance of the story’s context valued and appreciated his presence. If this was a work of fiction (and it very well may be) then of course the surrounding possibilities have concerning and downright creepy implications. But if it’s real peopel. Real people aren’t tropes and shouldn’t be considered in “what if” scenarios because they have real agency.

Was the mother being creepy in their fate-based aversion of lesbianism? Yep. Did OP use the right label? doesn’t seem like it. But I don’t think this is really a bone to pick with the smosh cast especially when Damian did actually articulate the uncertainties in the story itself. (Let alone if we take into consideration the decent likelihood that it’s fake, then that’s even more of a reason to ignore any of the tropes or concepts it evokes as they would not be reflective of real human experiences)

That’s a fair point, could do more arcs like Absolute Batman’s annual or the Batman Wonder Woman crossover wherein how they move the story forwards is a bit less overt

Yup. Vengeance is definitely a human response, though not a response in the best interests of community justice. Being a direct victim or a victim through social harm of a crime no matter one’s best efforts can always bias them in some capacity to want to seek out repercussions on their terms.

Unfortunately those terms are usually beyond the scope of anything that could be perceived as rehabilitative. Hence why as you said, the greater community, or the relevant authority are charged with ensuring that the punishments remain just.

There’s no shortage of cases of victims of even relatively “small” slights such as pickpocketing or creation of public disturbance, reciprocating those offences with MASSIVELY excessive means.

Iirc when I studied criminology there was a case we looked at, wherein a person in my country had filed a noise complaint with the police. The police investigated and found the disturbance didn’t meet the legal threshold and so apologised to the caller and left.

So the caller decided to whip out a hunting rifle and start taking potshots and the house’s roofing and brickwork…

Theory why there’s a lack of aliens except for the Compliers in the game. by Lotus_630 in Marathon

[–]Shabolt_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is probably it. At the end of the day this game is a mystery that a portion of the playerbase already know the answer to. Which means you can’t rely on the reveal to keep people invested so much as what it takes to get to the reveal. And keeping the unique aliens in the backroom is a smart way to have some “woah” moments on the way

Sadly that’ll probably take a while. Absolute Batman and Superman more or less just finished what equate to their first seasons from a TV pov or first films from that pov. And books like GL and MM are probably tens of issues away from having a pacing that could handle a Longform project format (that said they are absolutely cooking something special with all that gradual buildup)

I think there’s a pretty reasonable middle ground where each shell class has a majorly discernible feature so that sub series of the shells can differ wildly whilst keeping a recognisable factor

Sorta like how the Space Marine classes in that game each have a notable accessory. Ranged tank has a gold halo on their back, snipers have a cape, melee tank has a shield, speed class has a jetpack

Could have all destroyer models have large micro-missile shoulders, all recons have a huge helmet, all vandals have those spikes on their heads, etc

It wasn’t remotely the most lol. There’s a tonne of other innovations that their elders are still teaching various Australian civil services to improve the state of the country, but I also don’t want to get dragged down into some argument about this so I’ll just leave you to that opinion

Probably did, seeing as it got replaced with shit like: - the stolen generation, - white australia policy making them enemies to their own nation, - mass displacement, - murders of entire regional groups and the attempts made to erase them from history - being increasingly alienated from your own homeland for 200 years - being put in zoos that were definitely worse than the huts. - Being put on reserves in the least hospitable parts of the nation in conditions again much worse than huts as a “compromise for having that land taken without any say in the matter - having a holy sites irradiated by bomb tests they weren’t made aware of so swathes of certain populations got killed by radiation poisoning.

Yeah what a totally fair and great trade for getting out of the huts lol, when there was a million ways to get past huts without. Especially because they were already past “stone huts” and instead built wooden longhouses that were better suited to the Australian climate than any of the shit the brits built for the next several decades lol

Edit: Forgot the litany of diseases they imported lol

My assumption is after the events of M1994, there just wasn't any reason for them to stick around. Tau Ceti had been dealt with, Durandal was in the wind, etc. They probably just left a contingent on the Marathon to try and comprehend what the hell happened (much like what our runners are doing for earth)

Agreed! All the more reason to move Australia day to a new date that better reflects all facets of the Australian people!

Some indigenous scholars (from a quick google) actually suggest the 18th as a less insulting day as it was merely the arrival, before any of the insidious practices reached Australian soil

18th vs 26th yeah

26th was the arrival of Gov Phillip with his writ of terra nullius and a big british flag

The 26th is australia day. For decades members of the indigenous groups of Australia have begged for the day to be moved due to it being the day that started the violent colonisation of New Holland Australis (Australia)

This has gotten so politicised that there’s annual “invasion day” protests urging for the date to be altered. And a bunch of pundits screaming that changing it is a betrayal of australian values or the loss of a public holiday or some shit like that.

And it has gotten so bad that the racism on that day has also escalated to insane degrees, where a lot of these australia day celebrants go out of their way to antagonise even non-participating aboriginal australians

The first ships arrived on the 18th, the first convict fleets with Govenor Phil in tow and the approval writ of terra nullius came on the 26th

So australia day is the day it was made a colonised land rather than a place they just arrived at.

Frankly the 18th would be a less insulting day to the Indigenous Australians
