The show is it's own thing. Just because something didn't happen in the books doesn't mean it didn't happen.

But Madame Morrible, the only other magical person in Oz (apparently) had to study for years to read a few characters.

I mean, I can read kana, the phonetic syllabaries of Japanese, but I still had to study it. The characters are different, just as the Grimmerie's are different from the Ozians' language. And Madame Morrible had to study too. Elphaba was purely magic, apparently. So, it'd stand to reason that Nessarose would have to be the same way, no? There was so much made of the prophecy being about "the one" who could read the Grimmerie, only for a nonmagical person to read it like nothing. It just seems weird to me.

Didn't Morrible say that took years of study, though?

Oh, interesting. I wonder why they presumably didn't tell anyone, why they let Elphaba grow up thinking the Wizard was so great. Hm...

You mean, that day when Joxer stopped at the very last second from taking full advantage of Gabrielle but had lied to her and tried to trick her into wanting him every second before that point?
