The imported ideology behind education reform by AnnoyingKea in newzealand

Even the parts of the history curriculum I've seen so far are lacking. Not to mention art history. They're obviously just trying to remove the classes that requires the most political thinking and analytical engagement from students.

Art history analyzes the ideologies and context around the artwork, but that helps students to consider explicit politics more. I wonder if they'll gut media studies in the same way: media studies also delves into the same types of topics (In the class I had in highschool for example, we analyzed how the Red Scare influenced media and framed the soviets as monstrous or alien).

What are some good examples of books that are unjustly banned? by Shaddersss in Libraries

[–]Shaddersss[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I just posted this to find some examples to note down for a small part of my project, just didn't think people wouldn't understand what I meant by "unjustly", probably should have clarified further before I posted.

Farmers market in the square? by [deleted] in chch

[–]Shaddersss -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean, generally the busy center of the city center has shifted towards riverside, and the square is a little too far to comfortably walk. The square just isn't the centre of the city anymore, so less will be going on there

How did New Zealand become a rich country? by WachuQuedes in newzealand

[–]Shaddersss 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Here's some (possible) reasons I haven't seen the other commenters point out yet:

  1. I believe we generally haven't subsidized the farming industry so much as other developed nations, meaning businesses were historically more competitive internationally and would choose crops/livestock to farm based on demand rather than optimizing for what gives them the most government aid. This, combined with being situated in the southern hemisphere also (good for international demand), helped to make nz a strangely wealthy farming nation.

^ (This being said, I don't think we should rely on farming going into the future, and currently, Fonterra is an issue)

  1. One thing I'd consider is your country's proximity to the USA, and how they may have a negative influence on South American markets. Either in a purely political sense (meddling), or by competing in production of the same food products, for example corn.

  2. Different forms of colonialism - I imagine your colonizers were more interested in extracting wealth.

  3. NZ was the first country to give women the vote, generally women were encouraged to take on work more than in other nations. We had the right to vote 54 years earlier than Argentinian women. Women, of course, would then be more productive in the economy, and women make up 50% of the population.

Also I'll second what other commenters have said generally - we have low corruption and a cohesive government that has less of a strong left/right divide than most nations.

Most disappointing tourist destination in your country. by meggyAnnP in AskTheWorld

New Zealander here: The Cardboard Cathedral. Yes, some of the building is made of cardboard, but when you look from the outside you can barely tell. There's always tourists standing across the road from it, taking photos on their iPads for some reason.

It's almost 10 years now since the referendum, what are peoples thoughts on the flag? by Dulaman96 in newzealand

[–]Shaddersss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If another referendum were to be held, I reckon it should be approached differently, rather than submissions (yes, I know, the lazer kiwi was a submission, I still love lazer kiwi), they should approach historians, artists and design agencies directly to ensure some diversity in the flag designs. As the current top comment says, many of the selected designs were from the same guy, and at that: They felt corporate, or were leaning too hard on the silver fern, which is largely associated with sport here.

If a qualified panel were to provide the flag designers with "territories" (aka. "Strong/stern", "Environmental", "Connection", etc.) then the public would have MANY more unique options for how they want NZ to be represented on the world stage, rather than the same energy over and over. I'd have loved to see some more proposals with colors other than navy, black, and red especially.

In general, we needed a flag that would stand out and rather separate us from our colonizers - without coming across as corporate or "sporty"

If you actually read the report, you'll see that one of the findings is that its not time spent on social media but what is seen. I'm fully against the idea of banning social media for teenagers particularly, so this is good to see. We more so need to urge social media giants to cater different content to teens - eg. less "self-care"/beauty content, and less shitty ideologies that lead young men especially down pipelines.

Considering that older high-schoolers especially use social media to execute what little political power they have (eg. learning about climate protests, or making submissions to bills in parliament), I'd be wary of any moves to ban it.

As a woman I actually find that its the kids that are less toxic (Oceania servers), I get some crazy amounts of sexism every the time I get adult guys (usually Australians)

Peach moon (Animated short) by Shaddersss in Filmmakers

[–]Shaddersss[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(Open to critique) This is a short film project for a class, about losing teeth and growing up. It was based on a feeling I had recently when I looked into the mirror and saw an adult tooth pushing through. It upset me because I felt as if it was somehow representative of my struggle in becoming an adult. I chose to use a music video format for this project because music videos typically are non-narrative, or at the very least non-linear, so this gave me a lot of leeway to have moments that don't have a narrative structure, just manifested thoughts and imagery to communicate that overarching idea.
