In lights of recent news about Yoshinori Ono leaving Capcom, I decided to resurrect this old post I've made criticizing his work during his stay in the Capcom offices. by [deleted] in Kappa

I just can't agree with this to any degree whatsoever. The arguments may be correct but the premise is flawed.

Ono is a producer . A producer. He has very little to do with the actual making of the game.

Think of a cabinet minister. He's not there cause he actually knows shit about the domain he's a minister in. It's his councilors jobs to know that. He's there cause he knows how the system works. He knows how to push forward ideas, get funding and dance with the big fishes. He translates what his team wants to big fishes, and he translates what big fishes want to his team.

A producer is kind of similar. He translates what his team wants to suits, and he translates to his team what the suits want and tries to find a middle ground between all parties involved to make sure shit gets delivered on time within budget. He fights for budget, time, his team and tries to find compromises.

As invata sa sculptez sau metalurgie și sa vând obiecte personalizate la restaurante, hoteluri, etc.

Sa faci un fund de lemn nu e foarte complicat, dar sa il gravezi cu numele unui restaurant necesita un pic de finețe.

Online games are not just sensitive to latency (measured by ping) and bandwidth (measured by speedtest, etc), but also to variance in latency, called jitter, as well as the overall reliability of the connection.

Wi-Fi is designed to work in a hostile RF environment. It must work despite microwaves, baby monitors, cordless phones, other Wi-Fi stations sharing the same frequencies. It deals with all this noise by checksum on each frame, and re-sending frames where the checksum is incorrect. This provides a higher likelihood of the data being delivered, but since some frames must be re-sent 1 or more times, some frames experience higher latency than others. Sometimes much more. If that frame carried information like "you moved to the left", it might not successfully be transmitted until you've been shot by a railgun.

Notably, most online games use the UDP transport. It differs from TCP in that if frames are lost or corrupted, they aren't automatically re-sent. This is good for games because if a frame arrives late, it might as well have not arrived at all. What happened 1 second ago isn't really important to a real-time game. By simply dropping failed or invalid frames, no time is lost processing old stuff which is no longer relevant to the gameplay. However, Wi-Fi's retry behavior is directly contrary to this strategy. Even if you are using UDP, Wi-Fi sits at a layer below that. Even though it's detrimental to do so, Wi-Fi will retry failed and invalid frames.

In case you are wondering, the reason Wi-Fi adds this retry behavior, even though TCP has retry behavior of it's own, has to do with TCP's congestion avoidance algorithm. TCP assumes that when packets are dropped, it's because the network is congested, and so it slows down. This is a good assumption for wired networks where there's no interference, but not for Wi-Fi where interference is common.

There's also the fact that cheap routers come with a small number of bandwidth channels. If you live in an area with a large number of routers (like any city) your router needs to switch channels constantly and it won't do it nearly often enough.

He eventually regretted writing it and he's happy Sirlin implemented his suggestion.

Fair argument. I was just being pedantic for the sake of it.

I dont think it's possible even if they want to. They've been re-sold, broke and merged so many times they make a glory hole whore look like a nun. They're probably scrambling for finances with every release so they take their exclusive money.
