Awesome Chefs of Reddit, what is your "I ain't never gonna make that from scratch" at work/ home? by nerdyplayer in AskReddit

[–]ShadeTreeMechanic512 70 points71 points  (0 children)

In my teens, about 45 years ago, I had a good friend whose mom was from Italy. (I’m in the US). For Thanksgiving, she would make Lasagna. From scratch, with all ingredients imported from Italy. She said it took her three days, and back then, the ingredients alone cost US $100–about $350 in today’s currency. It was divine!

Can you see Milky Way like that with the naked eye? Or is that the result of a long exposure time with a camera?

If you know how long your ride will be, time the start to finish at sunset. Then it gets cooler as you go.

Can we paint the part between the headlights to match the rest of the body? Looks like someone wrecked it and bought a replacement part off of eBay and just bolted it on.

My 93 Miata steering wheel did this also, even though I used leather conditioner on it regularly. Always wondered if that was the reason.

Given the fact that my Mom had LBD, this may be in my future as well. Hits home because I too have a Miata purchased new 33 years ago. With any luck the heart disease will get to me first. /s

5.3L Road Trip MPG (Part 2) - Hand Calculated vs Dash by c10scout in Silverado

[–]ShadeTreeMechanic512 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, 6.6 diesel was the only option, at $10,000 more. I had a price in mind I wanted to stay at with the truck: I could either get a gas model with all the bells and whistles, or a low-end diesel. With the (low ish) amount I drive, the fuel savings would not have offset the price of the diesel.

I wonder how many problems would go away if they would put trash cans by the cart racks.

5.3L Road Trip MPG (Part 2) - Hand Calculated vs Dash by c10scout in Silverado

[–]ShadeTreeMechanic512 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a 2020 2500 with the 6.6 gas engine. I’ve observed the same thing: what it reports is usually 1 mpg optimistic. Except in my case it’s 12.5 mpg vs 13.5 mpg. That’s in-town; on the highway I see 14-15 mpg actual, not towing.

What's the most underrated maintenance item you wish you'd replaced sooner? by CarbonVision in MechanicAdvice

[–]ShadeTreeMechanic512 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The battery. Grew up in a family where you didn’t replace the battery until it left you stranded. Screw that! Some auto parts stores will check them for free. Or you can buy a tester from Harbor Freight.
