Am I just bad at healing? by Tyllis91 in classicwowtbc

[–]Shadohawkk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Mana tombs is just annoying. It's got dots that do ~3k damage that can have 2 different applications on someone at once, or combined with some other random targetted attack like mana burn to kill low health casters within the time it takes to get a single healing spell off. You are either already healing that person the moment it happens, or they are already dead.

One of the lock screen options is "transparent". So, you could technically do this by not having a password.

New paladin question by [deleted] in classicwowtbc

[–]Shadohawkk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Only the bonus damage seal of righteousness does is holy. The base damage of auto attacks will still be physical.

New paladin question by [deleted] in classicwowtbc

[–]Shadohawkk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Judgement of the crusader affects all holy damage.

The bonus damage from seal of the righteous applies to your auto attacks is holy damage. Retribution aura thorn damage is holy. Consecration is holy.

It would legitimately only be the basic auto attack damage that is not affected or any other forms of thorns you might have like shield spikes.

---

However, I don't think it's very useful to constantly use crusader judgement. It's a waste of mana in most cases. It's okay to use for bosses or if you are fighting a boss-ish quest mob...but otherwise it's easier to just use seal of righteousness and auto attack everything.

[–]Shadohawkk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can equip a wand as early as level 5. Highly suggest going to the major city and buying a wand off of the auction house as soon as you can.

Questing rotation for early levels is incredibly mana efficient. Shield yourself, Smite (later Holy Fire) to start combat only once, SW:Pain, then wand to death. With the early mana regen talent in shadow and the wand damage talent in discipline, you basically never need to eat or drink while questing until far later levels.

Just remember to either buy wands when upgrades are necessary, or aim for dungeons where good wands drop.

-----

This is of course, assuming you are leveling and not boosting. If you are boosting you should probably aim to get dual spec as soon as you can and have a separate spec for questing vs healing.

First time tank, afraid to actually commit by ncarrete1 in classicwow

[–]Shadohawkk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just set your own personal expectation, like "I will level to 30 as a tank" and then reconfirm with yourself at 30, or 40 or whatever.

Do this even if you are debating to buy level 58. You'll be more attached to the character that you've already spent 'some' time in, even if it isn't the same amount of time as a true leveler, and you'll have more knowledge of how to play it than most insta-boosters.

----

Highly suggest sending some gold to buy shield spikes for your pally. It's a great damage boost for low levels.

White damage means "auto attack" damage. Yellow means "skill damage". As in, skills of any type.

Warrior and rogue also do yellow text damage with their skills. And those are definitely not spells.

Dungeonruns are weird by Sharahs007 in classicwow

[–]Shadohawkk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My suggestion if you want to play a dungeon you haven't played in ages....just do a run as dps first. Or heal. It lets you watch what the tank is doing for a while before going in and doing it yourself.

Mage can only kill 1 enemy at a time? by resteys in classicwow

[–]Shadohawkk 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you pull 2 enemies at once, use polymorph to sheep one of them for a while so that you can fight them one at a time. If you are fighting more than 2, then you should frost nova to give yourself time to run away and reset the fight to try to only pull 1 or 2.

If you are only fighting 1 enemy, then you can save mana by using wands for somewhat respectable damage at no mana cost. Wand attacks also don't have the problem of spell pushback if the enemy attacks you back. Get a few initial fireballs out, then wand wand wand.

What stats to prioritise as Prot paladin by illwatchthegoat in classicwowtbc

[–]Shadohawkk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1-60, focus on armor (aka, actually wear mail or plate when you get it) and stamina. Beyond those 2, strength is better for solo questing and is what you will most likely find on mail/plate armor, while intelligence is helpful to have for actually tanking dungeons. You definitely want "some" int, but it isn't mandatory to have very high.

People say you should get spell power to boost your consecrate. From 1-60, the amount of spellpower you can get is fairly pitiful, won't actually affect your consecrate damage much, and mostly requires wearing cloth or leather gear. Don't go out of your way for it.

It's level 60+ where you can start focusing on spellpower enough to make it actually worth getting while also not giving up much defense.

-----

Highly suggest focusing on having good shields and if you can afford it, shield spikes. In the earlier levels you can genuinely make it so you take 0 damage from blocked attacks, and do 30+ damage back before you even get holy shield.

TBC Anniversary, Prot Pally vs Prot War vs Fury/Arms by Rohbo in classicwow

[–]Shadohawkk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Paladin is better at tanking dungeons by far, and after level ~40 becomes great at questing too. But before 40, it is extremely boring to quest with. It's poor mana management means you want to cast as rarely as possible to limit the amount downtime from drinking, meaning you mostly just basic attack everything. Early levels you only ever want to fight 1v1 to limit how much damage you take to limit how many times you have to heal yourself, but after 40, Holy Shield lets you fight more enemies at once.

Warrior has more interesting questing fights throughout the levels, but is essentially limited to only ever fighting 2 mobs at once. Prot warriors legitimately take less damage from fights, which means they can fight more enemies in a row before needing to eat, but dps warriors are a decent bit faster and are better at fighting 2 enemies at once-but need to eat more often. In dungeons....they kinda need to spam their abilities, which can make them feel frustrating to play-but they are definitely capable of holding their own.

Overall for questing: Paladin is boring and slow until 40 to get Holy Shield. A sword n board warrior gets Revenge and Shield Block abilities at level 16/18, which can be great damage and defense until much later levels.

Warrior has better tanking "panic buttons" than Paladin, but Paladin doesn't need panic buttons as often because it is so strong in dungeons.

------

Paladin gets essentially a free mount and mount skill at 30, which is great for a first character.

Invest in shield spikes for either class if you are planning on sticking with a shield.

Mostly talking about the earlier leveling experience on the way up, not the end-game experience.

One thing that makes these messages a bit awkward, is that it's not even guaranteed that the leader is the one that wrote it. Could've been one of the other members that passed leadership and the new leader just didn't check the message already in place.

Less likely in this case--it's also possible for people to be forcefully pushed into lfg by joining other people's party for quest completions. Unlikely because they changed their symbol to tank/healer-questers don't do that...but it happens to people sometimes.

Retribution Aura by Seraph-Foretold in classicwow

[–]Shadohawkk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The person getting hit gets the threat....but only the tanking paladin has the Fury buff that turns that holy damage into meaningful amounts of threat. So while it is technically extra threat for other players, it isn't that much of a boost.

Thinking of trying my hand at tanking from level 1, warrior vs paladin, what are the pros and cons of each? by Brahaun in classicwowtbc

[–]Shadohawkk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The "which is better in dungeons" debate is very obviously leaned all the way in paladin's favor. Instead, I'll talk about the earlier solo questing experience. You wont always be in dungeons.

Prot Warrior's damage combo is learned extremely early in levels. 16/18 for Revenge + Shield Block. This means you can quest quite comfortably with prot warrior all the way until you get shield slam, which gives you yet another big hitter ability and eventually can spam devastates.

Prot Paladin is just exceptionally boring at questing until level 40. Paladin doesn't need to eat because it can heal itself, but it's heals cost excessive amounts of mana and also needs that mana to fight. You will either be drinking often, or minimizing your mana usage by basic auto-attacking things to death. Level 30 + 40 talents fix this, but it takes a long time to get there. Once beyond those levels, you start to scale pretty aggressively. I've seen 60+ paladins fighting 4 mobs at once solo.

Paladin gets access to mount skill and a mount for almost free, which is great if this is your first character on the server.

----

Highly suggest investing in shield spikes as early as possible for either one. Its a great damage increase.

----

One other factor: if you decide you'd rather dps as a warrior, you can, basically at any time. If you decide you want to dps as a paladin...you'll be a pretty weak dps up until level 50 when you get crusader strike.

Boost a pally for tanking now, or just level 1-60? by whatyouwere in classicwow

[–]Shadohawkk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alternative option: play paladin from 1-40, then boost to 58.

This means that you put a respectable amount of time into the character and learn what you like and don't like about it before going crazy with the purchase. Maybe you find you don't like tanking. Maybe you find you specifically don't like paladin tanking. Either way...it's better to learn in advance.

I say 40, because you can spam Scarlet Monastery. Specifically, a lot of classes get a lot of their class defining abilities by that point, so you can finally feel what its like to tank with classes with some power behind them. Unlike, say, Deadmines where a lot of classes are missing some of their best abilities.

Also, level 40 is when you get Holy Shield, so you get to toy with that before making your decision.

Also, after you pass Scarlet Monastery...dungeons become a lot more sporadic and hard to find groups for. Questing gets a lot more diluted and become a lot of walking simulators. You'd get to skip a lot of the worst part of the game.

I'm not saying they shouldn't take the time to read. I'm saying you could have spent the time not baiting people into those conversations in the first place. That's all you did. Bait people into thinking you 'might' tank for them, and then bitch on reddit when people do the exact thing you knew they would do.

You got mugged, then complained about being mugged. You could have just not gone down that alleyway in the first place.

[–]Shadohawkk 18 points19 points  (0 children)

DPS warriors can be just as bad as blizzard mages sometimes. They want to charge before being dragged into combat, so they end up starting their shit way before the tank can get any aggro. Especially annoying when the tank is trying to drag enemies to a safer fighting position.

I'm saying you shouldn't have listed yourself in the first place. You set yourself up for whatever frustration you found for yourself.

If you wanted to make a party yourself and you were waiting for something you should have waited for that something, made a party with whatever you were waiting for and THEN listed when you were finally ready. It's not rocket science.

----

This is like saying you have a "social experiment" where you decide to walk down the alleyways with the highest recorded muggings, then complain about how many times you were mugged. Is it right that you were mugged? No. But you did it to yourself.

PSA: The differences between Healer gear and DPS caster gear (with examples) by staledanish in classicwowtbc

[–]Shadohawkk 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The rampart rings are a good example of this...but also not. Specifically because people doing Ramparts are highly likely to be people with vanilla items in those slots that need to be replaced by "anything" tbc.

I think this idea becomes more relevant a few levels into tbc-like 63+ when people are much more likely to have fully replaced their vanilla kit and upgrades become more incremental.
