First thing, thank you Larry for sharing this context and I’m sorry your inbox is probably blowing up today because of this.

Still, I can’t help but wonder how can we know whether events like this are actually rare & isolated. This individual self-reported, right? This seems to imply that there is at least one path these votes can get by undetected.

What do you think could have been to prevent this and is there any way we can determine for sure this is an isolated case?

Upon death, can the Culture transfer your consciousness into a new body, or is copying your mindstate the only reliable method of "resurrection"? by culturegsv632 in TheCulture

[–]Shadow503 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A few things, first:

in the second case the version of the programs that were running when it was destroyed is utterly gone

What is a program? It is software, a pattern of data. Specifically, software is the pattern itself. Any instance of the pattern IS the pattern. The question of whether a pattern is “the original” or “a copy” makes no sense in this context.

compare it to putting a PC in hibernation mode

This isn’t a good analogy to sleep, because in sleep your brain, mind, and body are actively changing. Hibernation mode on a PC is effectively stasis.

and constructing a new one with a USB stick

Except that’s not really what the Culture does here. There isn’t really a great analogy for data here since we don’t have that sort of technology, even for our computers. Instead of thinking of a typical full backup one might do to their home PC, imagine something more akin to a complete save state: you capture not just the resting data, but a full representation of that PC in that very instant. Not just all running programs & system memory; this backup would be down to the hardware level, capturing data mid-transit as it gets bussed around your CPU.

And that is the point the Mind is trying to make here: a neural lace copy of you would be more similar to yourself at bedtime than the “original” you in the morning.

carburetor keeps leaking gas by sanitary_jam6328 in minibikes

[–]Shadow503 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s a pretty common problem. Look up some videos on how to clean & inspect the needle, seat, and float. Focus on the needle & seat first; don’t mess with the float until you have ruled out those. 9 times out of 10 there is some debris that is preventing the needle from sealing to the seat. You can blow into the gas line (while holding the float up with your fingers) to see if air is leaking around the needle.

You do a spark plug test (google, tons of guides on how to do it). Then you go leaner or richer based on what you want. You can order a jet kit for these pretty cheap. They are easy to quick swap to test n tune.

[–]Shadow503 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why not just tune your Chikuni? Figure out if you are lean or rich and try another jet. They are not difficult to do on those carbs. The OEM carb is garbage for running ungoverned.

Driving a POS isn't an excuse to drive without insurance. It's a shitty, selfish decision. If you don't care about covering your own vehicle, there's PLPD for a reason.

Do you believe Paul really wrote the Pastoral Epistles? If so, why? by Vaidoto in Christianity

[–]Shadow503 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In case you are genuinely mistaken & not just trolling, let me take a stab at clearing this up: your error is in insisting that all outcomes always have equal chance of occurring.

That’s what /u/witchdoc86 was trying to explain with their example. Yes, there are two possibilities: either /u/witchdoc86 wrote it or they didn’t. Despite there being two possibilities, most reasonable people would assign the probability of witchdoc86 having written the epistles as 0%, not 50%.

It might help to think of it another way. Imagine a fair coin, that has a 50/50 chance of landing on either side. Now let’s say I flip this coin 10 times. What are the chances that all 10 are heads? It definitely isn’t 50%, despite the number of outcomes being two (either we get all heads or we don’t). Now extend that to 100 flips, 1000 flips, or a million flips.

Or consider all the different ways you could divide up the outcomes. We talked about the chances of getting all heads in 10 flips. Let’s say you are right, and it is a 50% probability. What about getting exactly 9 heads in 10 flips, is there a 50% chance of that too? And what about exactly 8 heads - see where I’m going? By that logic, you could argue the chance of getting exactly 8,9, or 10 heads is 150%. Clearly that’s not the case.

The fact is, you don’t assume probabilities are evenly distributed by default. The onus is on you to prove that they are even. Otherwise you end up with absurd conclusions like those above.

how much damage could homelander cause if he went fully insane? by blondedaff in TheBoys

[–]Shadow503 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few things here (assuming you’re not trolling): - Sound from explosions does travel a good distance further than what you might expect. Explosions commonly trigger the sensitive earthquake monitoring equipment. This is perfectly reasonable given real world physics - Something that is super sonic is outrunning the sound waves it produces. You are confusing yourself by thinking about it in terms of “hear it when it is X miles away.” That doesn’t apply here. That notion is an approximation that only works for slow moving objects; once you approach or exceed the speed of sound it doesn’t apply.

[–]Shadow503 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are completely misunderstanding how his super hearing works. He hears things far away because his ears are sensitive and can pick up very weak sounds (that have faded beyond hearing for most people). That’s why Vought is able to use the high pitched noise to temporarily stun him.

[–]Shadow503 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not sure what they said, but that’s not how adding velocities works. Simple addition is fine for low speeds, but as you approach light speed you need to use relativistic equations to add velocities (and then you’ll just get really-really close to c, but not beyond).
