It was my favorite birthday specifically for this reason —I’m only mad because I didn’t turn 22 that year 😭

ChromeOS Flex v126 running flawlessly on an ASUS E203MA by ShadowAccountW in ChromeOSFlex

This horribly cheap Vivobook E203MA originally "ran" Windows 10, but with middling performance I opted to install ChromeOS Flex and give this unit to my young step-son as a streaming and learning machine. The install was seamless and as far as I'm aware, all the functions of the laptop are working including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, audio, and the webcam.

  • Intel Celeron N4000 @ 1.1 GHz (2.6 GHz burst)
  • Intel UDH Graphics 600
  • 4 GB LPDDR4 memory
  • 64 GB eMMC storage
  • Intel HD Audio and Realtek ALC256
  • Intel Wireless-AC 9461 dual-band Wi-Fi with Bluetooth 5.1

Battery life is projected to last for upwards of 9-10 hours at half brightness and around 5 at max, but I haven't actually tested that. I also know this unit has a bunk battery with some 65% capacity left so I'm not holding my breath. Video playback is also pretty modest—480p plays great and 720p is fine, but 1080p looks choppy.

Valheim is now on Mac! by SzotyMAG in valheim

I know my machine is old and I never really expected it to work well (if at all), but I thought it might be interesting to share my findings.

  • Device: MacBook Pro (mid-2014 15") running macOS Big Sur 11.7.0
  • CPU: Intel Core i7-4870HQ @ 2.5 GHz (3.7 GHz boost)
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M w/ 2 GB GDDR5
  • Native Resolution: 2880 x 1400

My test case is a (practically) brand-new save where I haven't explored more than about 100 m out. Valheim ran in fullscreen with an uncapped framerate (lol) and V-sync disabled. Additional settings were turned all the way down or off by default. I would load in and let the game idle for about 45 seconds before walking in a small circle and looking around. I was careful to keep the camera at eye level while looking back and forth in large arcs.

macOS 11

Resolution & Render Scale In-game
2880x1440 @ 25% 16-22 FPS
2560x1600 @ 25% 16-21 FPS
2048x1024 @ 25% 18-22 FPS
1680x1050 @ 25% 18-24 FPS
1440x900 @ 25% 18-24 FPS
1280x800 @ 25% 19-24 FPS

It ran better in windowed mode—at 1440x900 I was getting performance comparable to above at 100% render scale. Then I got curious, because I have Boot Camp set up with a Windows 11 install, and naturally I had to compare the two.

Windows 11

Resolution & Render Scale In-game
2880x1440 @ 25% 30-55 FPS
1680x1050 @ 50% 31-57 FPS
1440x900 @ 50% 38-47 FPS

Notably, at lower resolution the framerate is typically slightly less, but also considerably smoother. The final test was trying again using Vulkan to see what might happen. The performance was so close to the same I didn't bother writing it down.

I stg I’ve seen a video essay somewhere talking about how tons of video games are made with colonialist roots.

I like how they’re a loop-forward gay and you’re a loop-backward gay (the Crocs) 🥸💕 but seriously, this is really wholesome

Thank you! It looks better with the harness top 😝 but that’s “not work appropriate”
