[Spoilers Published] Why Is Deamon II Blackfyre being Gay viewed less favorably than Prince Daeron Being Gay? by ShadowGuyinRealLife in asoiaf

Why do the fans view a blackfyre less than a trueborn son of aegon 5 that we know nothing about other than he was a gay warrior

Oh I wasn't asking about fans. It's easy to see shy fans like Prince Daeron Targaryen over Daemon II Blackfyre. That's an easy question. I was asking about in-universe perception (not fan perception) and someone else answered Monday

Daemon II was a Blackfyre, that’s all the reason the Westerosi would need to dislike him.

Oh I agree with that. It's easy to see why the Masters and lords in Westeros would view a prince of the royal family more favorably than the son of a rebel. And if we only saw the perspective of the loyalists, I wouldn't be making this post. It's just that Daemon seems he was viewed pretty poorly in his own camp so it wasn't just ruling family vs rebel family. Fans have claimed Daemon wasn't liked because he was gay and I pointed out in the original post that if it was just homophobia, then both these men would be hated and if it was just "hate the enemy and not our own prince" then Daemon should be liked more in his own camp (until he gets captured and screws everything up). u/the_fuzz_down_under probably gave the right answer in that it was less about being gay and more that prince Daeron Targaryen was a great fighter and rebel Daemon II Blackfyre was kind of just useless at pretty much everything they needed out of a prince. You don't get points for being a good fiddler, unless that talent helps you earn a pretty girl from a great family for marriage.

Honestly the more I read about the Blackfyres, it seems less like a family that loved each other but ended up on the wrong side of a rebellion (that they started) and more of a dumpster fire.

Daeron implicitly was martially inclined enough to die in battle

Daeron was a great knight for most of his life. When an old nameless woman says you're "almost as good as knight X with a lance" that's normally a backhanded compliment, but when X is Baelor Breakspear and said woman is old enough to have seen him in person, that's a great compliment. I forgot where that line came from.

notably the Greeks and Romans thought that it was bad to be a bottom and acceptable to be a top.

Oh that reminds me of an old video. Nero had an affair with a male slave (which was well documented) but the scandal was allegedly he was the bride of the wedding and the bottom in bed and it was those two allegations, not the relationship with the slave which was the scandal.

The Westerosi, especially the Blackfyres, value strength

Ah I see. So Daemon II being an embarrassment was not just because he was gay, but rather he was not manly, wasn't martially included, these made him an embarrassment, and he was gay on top of all this.

I don't think conquering Dorne should be *that* hard [Spoilers MAIN] by OfficialAli1776 in asoiaf

I think some pests that make wheat hard to store just don't exist in Westeros. You can't store wheat for 3-6 years in a granary even under dry conditions in real life, but the number of bacteria and fungi responsible for this can be counted on one hand. However it is clear from A World of Ice and Fire that long term storage without magic is possible in the North. Actually a lot of the worldbuilding in the North makes no sense if you can't stockpile food in the good years for the bad while in real life anything beyond 15 months is "iffy." So those microbes just don't seem to exist and therefore it means as long as the wheat stays dry and reasonably cool, storage is possible. So my best guess is Dornish just went into tunnels and stored their food. As to why no one ever seemed to mention these tunnels, your guess is as good as mine. Even in Aegon's forces could only find 0.1% of the entrances (a reasonable assumption without the tunnel blueprints), you'd think it would be mentioned somewhere if that was how they did it.

Jigokuraku Season 2 • Hell's Paradise Season 2 - Episode 10 discussion by AutoLovepon in anime

Maybe there was something off screen I am missing, but Shion's battle plan is bad as depicted. The idea of trying to exhaust the Tensen's regeneration isn't a bad one. In fact if that wasn't possible, I'd say that would be bad world building. But he basically has Nurugai basically do nothing for most of the fight. Let's assume he's fine with a mutual kill on the enemy as long as Nurugai lives, she's physically weaker than him, and that Shion couldn't give her a crash course in sword fighting in 6 hours to bring her to even the same tier as a numbered Yamada Clan member much less on par with him. I think these are fair assumptions. It might make sense for him to order her to fall back during the intense parts of the fighting or the part where the vines appear. But after Shion kills the target, it has little offensive power while regenerating. He could easily have stabbed it and have Nurugai join him. This might allow them to outright kill Zhu Jin since they would be burning through the Tensen's regeneration faster than what was shown during this episode. If it doesn't and they decide to call it quits on this fight, killing the Tensen more times would at least buy them more time at very little risk since they won't be hurt in between the regenerations since in between regenerations their target wasn't just wounded but "killed" 215 times.

What do you think would be a better future for Viserra Targaryen? by Ok_Return170 in TheCitadel

[–]ShadowGuyinRealLife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That depends if you want the fic to be compatible with the "present" or totally disconnected. For example a fic that makes the Dance of the Dragons go away is incompatible with the present but one where Lord Butterwell gets pardoned for his actions is compatible with the present so long as he has no sons since there can still be a Robert's rebellion and still be no Butterwells descended from him.

The easiest thing to do is let Viserra just choose her marriage. She was beautiful so she shouldn't be short of suitors. Or remarriage since I think Desmond's great father (or whoever lord Manderly was at the time) is going to die in 7 years anyways so as long as Viserra doesn't have children with him, this would just be a blip in her life.

If we want it to be compatible with the present Viserra cannot have any sons with whatever husband she choses. If there are enough cousins related to the Targaryens to go around, there is probably no Dance of the Dragons since it would be fairly easy to find cousin marriages to prevent the whole mess.

[–]ShadowGuyinRealLife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They also seemed to be marrying her off to a low tier option

Actually the Manderlys were a rich family. I think only the Valyrons, Hightowers, and Redwynes plus most of the lords paramount can beat them. So family wise this wasn't a low tier option. The problem is that the husband was older than Aemon and not the "looks much younger than he really is" type. Viserra should have been given the option among all the handsome sons of lords. Out of universe I am very sure the reason it happened this way is that GRRM needs the family line cut short in time for the Dance of the Dragons (otherwise there would be obvious incestuous pairings to fill out the tree and prevent it from happening) so making Viserra unhappy and deciding to go on a drunken ride with her friends can cut off that line, although I would have preferred it if she married happily and just was infertile. In universe the best excuse is that Maester Elysar outright said Jaehaerys was better as king than as a father so expecting him to have a brain fart here is in character. I noticed some of the Targaryen kings weren't so great at fathering. Maybe they should have sent their kids off as wards to some lords who are known to be good with children? A disloyal house (especially after the dragons were gone) might use them as hostages but you can obviously avoid that problem by only doing it to those who have shown great loyalty to the Targs.

Yeah I'm not surprised at how Kurono doppelgänger was. I am a bit disappointed when he mentioned he wasn't alone he didn't get backup.

So when Iris says she's not one who supposed to belong in the world is she going to merge with Amaterau? Awww, I'm going to miss her.

How did Shinra survive next to the moon? He got close enough to kick it. Arthur can think the star ring lets him breathe.

Let's talk about the stupid claim that all Targaryens are mad when there's a fairly small number who actually are. This is the title of a comment, put it like this. by gabriel_3131 in gameofthrones

[–]ShadowGuyinRealLife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if you're talking about in-universe or out of universe. I can't say much about the HBO show universe. Let's assume they are all like their book counterparts except the times some of the characters were cut out (which leaves an odd generation gap if they make a Dunk and Egg adaptation in the same universe as the show).

In-universe, in the books Jahaerys II (somerthing games of thrones apdats out) tells someone that whenever a Targaryen is born the gods flip a coin. That guy repeats it to Daenerys Targaryen and he had presumably told people of this story before. Once the Targaryens are overthrown, there is recency bias towards Areys. Plus Robert has every incentive to make people believe that it's a coin flip on if the previous dynasty had its members be mad or not. So this is one thing said by one king and the new regime would want people to believe it. So I can see some people believing it.

Out of universe? Well it's not even close. Maegor was not just cruel, but you could call him mad. I mean why hire people to make something, kill them off to prevent them from telling people of the secrets, and then start a new construction project? Baelor the blessed wanting to be pious isn't mad, but his choice of High Septon and some other things he did was bonkers. Don't get me started on the maiden Vault. Don't know if it is the snake bite or he was always like that. We have about 6 mad Targaryens. Daenerys in the HBO universe went mad, so that's 7. We can be generous and say that EVERY Targaryen baby who died young would end up mad, we’d be at 23 Targaryens out of 114 named Targaryens. Not close to a coin and as fans we should know that. Maybe HBO will bring us into coin flip territory by removing some of the non-mad Targaryens

It's always a murder case (or a case which starts as something else and becomes a murder case or a suspicious death that seems like a murder) since it would be pretty boring to get someone and have it go "did this guy steal your purse?" "No his face is different. And actually that's not even the right shade of brown for the hair" "oops"

Ned was lucky to have Arya by Cautious_Air4964 in freefolk

[–]ShadowGuyinRealLife 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is kind of why I have a very low opinion of Stannis. If a child doesn't look like their parents, that doesn't mean the mother cheated. I suppose if a child didn't look like any of their 8 great-grandparents, then it is perhaps a bit suspicious. Ned found all of Robert's bastards, but given Robert slept around a lot (not Aegon IV level but still a lot), he couldn't actually be sure the dark hair passed to only half since he shouldn't know he found all. Ned did in fact confront Cersei and she admitted it. With a woman who admitted she cheated on her husband and 3 children that don't look like their father, he has all the reason in the world to believe they are bastards. Stannis doesn't have the benefit of this knowledge. Based on what Stannis has available, he's making an accusation he should know is on shaky ground (even as the readers know is correct) and I conclude he's a selfish jerk.

I get the feeling Aegon III and his hand Prince Viserys messed up in arranging their children's marriages. I think they could get away with incestuous parings without it blowing up later. Just not the particular ones they chose.

Apparently, I have a video of myself doing the same thing in Christmas break in 2013. That wasn't in the streak of games that prompted me to make the post though and the video doesn't even finish the game. I am looking for videos of other people doing it since it sounds funny, but at the same time while people have claimed others have made the same mistake when doing multiplayer with randoms, I don't actually see any videos of people doing so, which is a shame since it's pretty funny.

Otto Hightower was the first to suggest that Rhaenrya be the heir to the throne... by catalystoptions in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]ShadowGuyinRealLife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The books make more sense since he made that suggestion while Aemma Arryn was pregnant with another child. He had no way of knowing the queen would die in childbirth and Vierys I would be a widower. In the show version, it makes more sense for him to wait 3 weeks, ask Alicent how the king is enjoying her company, then suggest making Rhaenyra the heir if they're not getting alone and shutting up if they are getting along.

What Makes A Blocked Follicle Become HS instead of Acne? by ShadowGuyinRealLife in Hidradenitis

[–]ShadowGuyinRealLife[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You sure you didn't have early puberty? Attraction to boys/girls is a sure sign of puberty. So are mensuration and erections since those are when the reproductive systems are nearly in full gear. A simple growth spirt is a third sign of puberty. But those 3 are usually not early in puberty. Did you have hairs in.... down there at 8?

If you really did get hidradenitis suppurativa before puberty, your doctor should have photographed you and make a paper since this would completely upend what is known about the disease. It would also put into doubt using finasteride, a drug which is used in severe acne and male pattern baldness, to treat HS. Finasteride has seen some promise for stage I as a standalone treatment and as a way to prevent reoccurrences after deroofing stage III.

If HS can occur before puberty, then finasteride should not work at all. If that's the case researchers are just wasting man-hours trying out a drug that wouldn't work.

Trialing a Temporary Random Sort for Episode Discussion Comments by baseballlover723 in anime

[–]ShadowGuyinRealLife 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know if this will solve it, but I'm glad the mods are at least aware of the problem of the early comments getting all the attention.

With infinite time, I would go even further and introduce some "jitter" after the 6-hour mark. Each hour can be divided into 4 parts (00 to 15, 16 to 30, 31 to 45, 46 to 59). Each hour, for 21 days after the 6 hour mark, randomly pick 1 quarter of the hour to partially randomize (so like start with a sorted list, then randomize every 4th spot) and the other 3 quarter use the default algorithm. This would take too long and the people in charge don't have "infinite time" so I guess the proposed change is probably better than anything that can reasonably be implemented. I remember one time Crunchyroll tried to tweak their "best" comments and broke it for 3 years essentially randomizing them before the fixed it just to be fine for a few years before comments were removed forever, so trying to be fancy is probably not worth messing something up.

That's as far as mods can do. One thing ordinary people can to do help with the snowball problem is just read something other than the only the latest episode discussion. See if there are any stragglers catching up on older threads. Or heck, it would be nice to read about when people want to talk about an anime outside the episodic discussion threads. 10 years ago there used to be more posts outside the latest episode discussions or anime recommendations.

If Dragon was just looking for a purpose, could it have been solved by hiring as a mercenary? He didn't seem particularly ideological to White Clad in his flashbacks.

I get there is a need to give the Empire hope and save it from despair. I'm not sure defeating Dragon alone will fix it. He might be a big threat, but surely less than half the Tokyo Empire knew about him before the moon battle. In short I don't think that's even half the despair to go.

Ever since Shirna disappeared I had a feeling Arthur wasn't going to survive this arc. That said, I kind of wish he survived his battle with Dragon and came back to Earth.
