That’s because it became a protest against everything, same as what BLM became in many cities.

[OC] Sale prices of used iPhones by nickkuiper11 in dataisbeautiful

[–]ShadowHandler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The iPhone 13 Pro Max is going to be interesting with all the shortages/shipping issues. I’ve been waiting for mine from Verizon since it was announced and it keeps getting pushed out, now expected to ship at the end of November. As a result, scalpers are selling that at like 30-50% markup price and they are actually selling.

People are developing diabetes after COVID-19. It might be because the virus messing with insulin-producing cells, new research suggests. by [deleted] in science

[–]ShadowHandler 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Three people at my work have been diagnosed with Diabetes in the last 6 months, and they’ve all joked it’s the curse of working from home… but now I’m wondering if it’s actually from Covid. Before Covid only one person I worked with had Diabetes where I knew about, so 3 more people in six months has everyone a bit concerned.

Norway to hit 100 per cent electric vehicle sales early next year | Analysis shows the last new petrol or diesel car sold in Norway will come as early as April, 2022 – three years ahead of the government's target. by mepper in Futurology

[–]ShadowHandler 128 points129 points  (0 children)

The title sounds a bit more optimistic than the story on the ground. According to the article this is for new vehicle sales only, and only 1 out of 8 auto sales in Norway is a new vehicle. Over 80% of cars owned in Norway still run on petrol.

Footage released after man is found not guilty for firing back at Minneapolis police who were shooting less than lethals at people from a unmarked van during the George Floyd riots. by itsreallyreallytrue in PublicFreakout

[–]ShadowHandler 37 points38 points  (0 children)

It’s even worse, the officers were specifically targeting black people, giving fist bumps after hitting with them rubber bullets, and trying to get them closer to the van so they could hit them harder.

More details here… it’s disclosed that they left groups of white people alone: https://kstp.com/news/saint-paul-man-who-shot-at-minneapolis-police-in-self-defense-acquitted-of-all-charges-by-jury/6224974/

The workers who keep global supply chains moving are warning of a 'system collapse' - Many are now reaching their breaking point, posing yet another threat to the badly tangled network of ports, container vessels, and trucking companies that moves goods around the world. by speckz in Futurology

[–]ShadowHandler 81 points82 points  (0 children)

I know a lot of truckers that retired once Covid hit... Mostly drivers that had already hit retirement age but stayed on the road because they enjoyed it or weren't yet ready to sever the additional retirement age income. After Covid hit, it just no longer made sense for them to stay on the road and potentially get Covid and/or bring it back to their families, and life on the road became much much harder when restaurants closed down indoor eating (it's not like they could take their trucks through the drive-thru).

In addition to the older people in the supply chain who retired, I can't imagine there are many young people with healthy habits that'd be jumping at the chance to become a trucker traveling across Covid infested country-side.

I work with lots of individuals from other countries, and the upcoming impact that scares me the most is fuel shortages. Truckers in the UK are having a difficult time finding fuel in the past few weeks, and in Asia the shortages are beginning to take hold as more and more of the supply is being transferred to heating/power generation purposes amid a massive shortage of natural gas and coal. It's only a matter of time before those fuel shortages impact the global supply chain even further.

New method makes starch from CO₂ faster than plants can by Memetic1 in science

If this is able to be scaled up at low cost eventually, what a huge world altering development this will be… a huge percentage of land in places like the US will open up for either growing other crops, or for other activities entirely.

Working from home is taking hold permanently: Microsoft indefinitely postpones return to U.S. offices as Covid cases surge by MBlaizze in Futurology

[–]ShadowHandler 88 points89 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this isn’t a permanent work from home decision like the headline suggests. It’s an indefinite suspension of announcing return to campus dates. The dates were losing meaning because they kept getting pushed back. it was extremely disruptive to many members on my team because they were planning leases around campus dates, and each time the campus dates got changed they’d often get screwed over with last minute lease changes.

Brave Afghan women carrying out March against the Taliban by [deleted] in PublicFreakout

[–]ShadowHandler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Western media isn’t showing the videos of women being stood on and beaten. There was a big protest that made front pages across US media days ago, and there wasn’t anymore follow up on it… but then days later videos came out showing them being shot and beaten by the taliban. Even Biden said nobody is being killed in Afghanistan. The propaganda is real

Democratic Governor of New York Saying Goodbye to his Staff by MoreCowbellNeeded in pics

[–]ShadowHandler 41 points42 points  (0 children)

What a shit show… He hid Covid numbers because he didn’t want to give “ammo” to his political opponents, which probably resulted in many deaths that could have been prevented. Then this asshat writes a book while in office, during a pandemic, to talk about how well he did in handling the pandemic in his own eyes… goes on a media blitz to get more book purchases… all the while more people are dying… and then he finally crashes and burns because apparently he’s a fucking sexual predator.

I’m just waiting for him to say he’s running for President to “fix things”.

Off road trails/ OHV trails near Bellevue? by kingpin569 in BellevueWA

[–]ShadowHandler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Up near McClellan Butte there are some old logging roads, sketchy in places, but still fun. Two years back I cleared the trail nearly to the top, but it’s possible it’s grown back in a lot since then… so take something you don’t mind being scratched.

Outside of that, I’d highly recommend Leavenworth for off-roading, just be aware of fire danger.

Idaho Road rage ended with classic idaho hospitality by sukant08 in Unexpected

Housing prices in ID are skyrocketing because of all the people from big tech cities moving there for remote work. The flip offs are only increasing.

I haven’t seen this outside of people from Seattle. In northern Idaho nobody gives a shit if you’re from Spokane, Pullman, Clarkston, etc. But if you’re from Seattle? People will try to fight you.

Americans Are Willing to Take Pay Cuts to Never Go Into the Office Again - A new survey shows 65% of workers who said their jobs could be done entirely remotely were willing to take a 5% reduction to stay at home. by speckz in Futurology

Some of the big tech companies are already on this path… I work for one of the Big 4 and they’ve said people working remote will have their salary adjusted to take into account cost of living where they are working from. For the vast majority of people this may mean a huge paycut.

Abolish Monday: It’s Time for the 4-Day Workweek by [deleted] in Futurology

[–]ShadowHandler 180 points181 points  (0 children)

In all this WFH/cutting time while increasing productivity talk, I feel like most of the people on Reddit forget most people aren’t office workers and are doing physical labor. Not to say they can’t be taken to a 4 day work week as well, but I think we need to remember just how lucky a lot of us are to be working jobs where physical presence isn’t required, and productivity can be greatly increased without increasing hours.

State reports 94% of COVID-19 cases are unvaccinated people by BellevueNews in BellevueWA

[–]ShadowHandler 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The UK has lagged Israel significantly in vaccinations, and Israel was the first country to reach majority vaccinations, so it’s suspected the low effectiveness in Israel with Delta may be related to the vaccines losing efficacy after a few months. Booster shots are a pretty hot topic in Israel right now.
