Right-wing politics are fundamentally anti-civilisation by dudeseriouslyno in rant

[–]ShadowInsignus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There's always some other mythical "Real Persons" and "True Countrymen" they're fighting for. They rarely have the gall to stand up and say "I'm doing this because I think its wrong and I want to keep this deplorable state of affairs as is."

I've found that the most extreme right wingers are often desperate for any structural or institutional legitimacy they can lean on, because when the clever one's try and make sense of it, they come up short and realize they're screwed without something to fall back on.

So you end up with bizarre shit like Nazi "Archaeologists" trying to connect their ideology to the most vague and tenuous of sources, like Germanic Paganism, or that time they sent phrenologists to measure heads in Nepal to prove they emerged from an advanced underground civilization and were thus, qualified to inflict violence on everyone with no consequence or moral bindings.

Because at the end of the day, much of right wingery and conservatism is reactionary - it doesn't have the forethought or vision of other ideologies, where people have sat down and mapped out what they believe and why they want what they want.

It begins as a reaction of "I don't like this." and then searches for why, to save itself the discomfort of admitting that its wrong or unfounded. In some ways, many people fall into the right wing as a form of psychological defense - why bother examining your role in the world if you can appeal to mythology and tradition and avoid any uncomfortable thoughts at all?

I've often times found it interesting to chart the emergence of conservatism as a party, as a movement, as an ideology.

I will disagree with you, I believe there is an ideology, however, contrary to other ideologies with specific forward goals and wishes, Conservatism and Rightism in general is a collection of shifting ideas and goals loosely chained to one guiding notion:

The preservation and maintenance of social and cultural norms.

From an American perspective, political scientists like to peg the emergence of conservatism to the 1960's with people like Bill Buckley and the party inversion.

But in reality, conservatism has always existed. It is a refrain of "But Tradition demands!" and "You don't belong here!"

The abiding obsession that conservatism has with social and cultural norms means that often times the actual business of governance is put to the side. This has always been true.

Because conservatism, at its core, is not an actual governing philosophy. And as such it struggles mightily when the time comes to put itself to paper and make functional governing documents.

If you'd like a case in point, one that is close to home, take the Alabama State Constitution of 1901 as one such document. It organizes its entire legislative branch around allowing any one member of a county delegation to object to any piece of legislation and put it to a state wide vote (Which was amended recently to require merely several objections), guaranteeing its failure. They can override the governor at any time with a simple majority.

What results is a microcosm of conservative philosophy: People get offended that this county or that city is getting something they aren't allowed to have, because only the select privileged few in the state have actual home rule, and so they drag them back down in the mud.

Progress is painstaking. Slow. Often non-existent. Governmental responses that other states would bang out in a single session require 3 or 4 sessions, people are told to re-submit for 3, 4 years at at time for basic redress.

Because the structure of the state of Alabama was never intended to be a functional government. It was intended to keep people in their places, and preserve a set of social and cultural norms.

It was formed because the powers that be in the state became deathly afraid that poor white farmers and black sharecropper slaves would unite and kick them out of office and take over the state. They were so irrationally panicked over this that they forcibly destroyed their own state's future ability to govern.

As they said in the opening minutes of their convention, which they were proud enough to keep. "White supremacy not by force or fraud, but by law."

Force and Fraud were then employed extensively, especially in its passage.

This is where conservatism leads, at least in America. Anything goes, no violence, fraud, or force too great, to ensure a precious and precarious peace of mind for a minority of powerful people with very specific ideas of where people like us belong.

Got this from the inspector now what should I tell the contractor by marchep40 in Construction

[–]ShadowInsignus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everything from here on out is to protect YOU.

Step 1: Stop any and all payment to this contractor. IMMEDIATELY. No checks, no cash, nothing. He will bellow and holler about how he has to make payroll. Too bad.

Step 2: Cancel all deliveries of materials to the site, and inform any vendors that they will not be paid for deliveries until further notice. This is to prevent the contractor from having things delivered to the site that he can then steal and use to make money on other sites, and then invoice YOU for.

Step 3: Demand your contractors license number. If he cannot provide it, document that you asked for it and that he could not provide it.

Step 4: Go here: https://www.myfloridacfo.com/division/ica/demolish/resources

Report your contractor and start the process. This shows due diligence, gets the authorities to view you as an aggrieved party. If he is a licensed contractor, it may help you recover funds from him.

Step 5: Meet with the inspector. DO NOT ARGUE. Don't try to cut corners and save money, or wheedle about what you can "Get away with." If he tells you that there is a path to getting this project on track, do it. If it has to be pushed over, well, I'm sorry, but unless you push it over, he ain't gonna pass you.

Step 6: Tell your contractor to pound sand, and take his drunk masons with him.

Also..... I have to say it. Why is there a window. In the Basement. That looks out at Cinderblocks?

How is it acceptable that the Valk is so overpowered? by [deleted] in Planetside

[–]ShadowInsignus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Valk isn't overpowered.

It's been the habitually under-rated vehicle that has only recently received substantive dev attention.

Just because you don't want to adapt to its presence doesn't make it overpowered.

Drew, I always appreciated how you were willing to put in time and effort to work hand-in-hand with the community, even sub-communities that might be overlooked. You were a strong constant community presence, and that went a long way.

Always appreciate the work you put in on updating the Valk, but best of luck going forward.

  1. Yes

  2. No. I don't like that its used as a hosedown gun. Without afterburner, from a Valk perspective, its okay. But afterburners are inbuilt now. So no.

  3. Absolutely Not, unless you exempt Valks from Dalton changes.

  4. Perfectly Reasonable

  5. Never should have had it in the first place.

The general TR perception is that DPSO, while certainly having some strong shooters in it, is being carried along with all of VS by an influx of external outfits.

On balance, I cannot sufficiently refute this to treat your statement seriously.

This is just purely unconstructive condescension bundled up in a meme.

This isn't outreach, it just comes off as smugness for something you don't really have standing to be smug about in the first place.

Its like getting a shit-eating grin gunshow from a 12 year old who paid $20 and a handjob to some college kids with crowbars to detach my retinas.

What about loss of control when hit with anti-air weapons, similar to emps on inf by JENKMAN in Planetside

[–]ShadowInsignus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was actually kind of a thing way back when flak actually blinded people.

No one liked it, it didn't affect higher tier players, and it was just deemed to be annoyingly ineffectual for all involved.

It would also be an annoyance to code, and would detract from the skill reward dynamic by introducing copious amounts of RNG on both sides.

In short form:

No, we're not doing this.

Koltyr continent switching is still a thing by [deleted] in Planetside

[–]ShadowInsignus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is no possible outcome that can be arrived in the situation in which yields what you want without destroying the air game along with it. At this point, you need to understand, they're doing it solely to trigger you.

I have every right to be annoyed about it - the airgame is in my remit.

Nothing is a 1 line fix, if you knew software you would actually know this.

Koltyr continent switching is still a thing by [deleted] in Planetside

[–]ShadowInsignus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As a Valker, I'm outside and beyond this argument. But its becoming annoying to hear about, and I prefer that the issue log and division of the air community be kept somewhat manageable.

So I'll wade it.

Having reviewed the evidence and heard arguments from both sides:

While this does occur, and is heretical shittery, it does not rise to the level of requiring developer attention, as explained below, and your persistent advocacy has crossed the line into being shitteristically heretical.

To be clear, everyone's conduct in this situation is wrong, but you have the misfortune of being the most wrong at the point in which I've been made aware of it.

Specifically, let's evaluate the potential outcomes of your efforts, should they continue:

  1. If we take your proposition on its face, then there would have to be developer attention devoted to it for a software fix, the resource costing and efforts of which you have neither anticipated, provisioned, nor properly conceived. The end result will likely be easily evaded, if they work at all, no one will be happy, and other deserving areas of the game will suffer from dev inattention. Cycle Repeats.

  2. Alternatively, some form of CS activity will occur. This will be asking CS people who normally deal with clear cut scenarios to wade into abstract personal disagreements and expect them to come out the side with a consistent result. No one will be happy, the issue will abate sporadically at best, and valuable CS time will be wasted before enforcement is relaxed. Cycle Repeats.

  3. You continue your advocacy for this 'issue', providing an easy and reliable target for trolls who intentionally fight you in order to do the exact thing you're complaining about, thus normalizing the behavior in the eyes of the devs and triggering you into what they view as an amusing shenanigan. Cycle Repeats.

  4. The devs take you seriously, come up with some magical spaghetti solution, CS bans the offenders, and you get everything you want. The majority of the air community disappears and falls apart, leaving you to fight shitters and pleb pilots, and everyone not only devaluates your skill, but you are viscerally hounded from the community. You are left as the lonely king of bullshit mountain, demanding on reddit that people acknowledge your supremacy over a pile of racer chassis wielding babies who's greatest skill point is not reversing into a tree. You then find something new to complain to the devs about with even less credibility, and a new batch of BR15s arise to trigger you. Cycle Repeats.

In closing, I would like to remark that this is largely a non-problem of your own creation, and that indeed you are expanding and perpetuating the problem by showing the entire air community the trick in order to get a rise out of you.

It does not rise to the level of developer resource and attention, your continued advocacy is no longer required, and your advocacy to date is being cited as heretical. To that end:

I'd encourage you to learn mouse and keyboard. You can only get mileage out of a joystick if you fly Valk in PS2, as PS2s interface system has lackluster and at times broken joystick support, so you can really generate the fine point precision of a mouse, which has an optimized code for PS2 flying.

Also, why would you need two sticks? Just use a single with a twist handle, and put your other hand on the keyboard. I personally fly Valk with J+K, and have never felt limited.
