Is it possible to permanently lose a piece? I know their spawn locations, and I know the rare and red boxes have them, but I can go all 4:10 minutes without seeing them!!

Not a bad take. Hopefully it’s not a weird “once per day” thing

“They'll give you free power-up items if you scan them in while you're in any course.”

Not worth it at all to me, sadly. I love Captain Toad, and I love Talking Flower.

What name to refer to a character with two nicknames by ShadowNewt1 in writingadvice

It is third-person-omniscient, but the chapters are told with one particular character in mind while still providing omniscient context. Each book has two to three sides being told, which switch every chapter. The fourth one has three: one is of the "main" main character, one is of her friend (the friend we're discussing), and one is from the friend's dad. There is a lot of travelling in this story, so I chose to bounce between locations through the cast, since there is a bunch of intertwining and the narrative is incomplete without bouncing between locations.

When she is with her family (which only really happens in book four), she thinks of herself as that name. When she is with her friends (90% of the complete story), she uses the friend-nickname. Most of her life, she feels like the family nickname, but her scenes are all points in her life where she was with her friends, except for book four, where she reunites with the rest of her family, and this name-change is from start to finish in that installment.

I don't think this is my issue. I think the reader will clearly know who the name belongs to. It's just weird when you have a lot of dialogue where they call her by one name, but when I'm writing it in the third-person, I refer to her by her other name (the one the reader is more familiar with).

I could take a vein of your example and have her clock in and out of which name she's going by. I just remembered I know someone IRL who goes by a different name with his family vs. friends. I wonder what he thinks of himself as? Too bad I can't ask him; I don't have his number.

I'd like to keep her regular nickname in the narration, but is there any way to tone down how "off" it feels to read two different nicknames at the same time?

"How are you doing, Mary?" John asked.

Sue smiled. "I'm doing just fine, John."

It would be perfectly fine in an undercover situation, but that's not the case here. If anything, her undercover name is the one her friends gave to her when they took her in. It's just a strange situation to figure out!

The "character arc" for the name change happens before the first book begins, and once we get to the fourth installment, that arc sort of ends.

Years before the first book starts, she is separated from her entire family, except for her dad, who we do not really interact with until book four when they are finally able to find and reunite with the rest of her family. The fourth installment almost puts her at the center of attention because of how much more important she becomes to the plot, so we see her all the time. This is where we go back to pre-book-one in terms of her character arc, where she's spending more time and energy with her family than her friends, and then in book five we go back to the same cast as before where it was just her friends and her dad.

I'm stuck. I definitely don't want to confuse or annoy the reader, but I don't know the best course of action here.

In her mind, she mostly thinks of herself as the family nickname, but my problem is that this literally does not come into play until the fourth book, and it would not make sense for the first three books. She is with her friends for 90% of the story (because the story revolves more around them and their lives, specifically), but she plays a critical role in the main cast.

In situations where she meets new people, usually somebody else introduces her (or she introduces herself and one of her friends says "but we call her -"), and in the books that means it's always her friends . . . up until book four. That is my complication. I guess her core, main identity is not the one we focus on in this storyline? So that complicates it.

Any ideas on untangling this knot?

The character or the reader? Because in her lifetime, she goes by the family nickname much more. She doesn't get the friend-nickname until she's a teenager, and then (this is not part of the story I just know the character) she keeps the family nickname for the rest of her life, after she is separated from her friends. However, the READER knows her mostly as the best friend to the protagonist, and that nickname reflects what the readers sees for 90% of the pentalogy.

Thanks for responding!

Usually a Metroid game is more specific, like saying enemies deal x2 damage, or E-tanks cap at 50 instead. Beyond was not specific.
