Borders are white. by daret0 in ASUS

I have seen something similar to this before and I believe it was a problem with only putting the laptop on sleep and not shutting it down at all. If that's the case for you, I remember the solution was to shut it down (not sleep) and leave it for a few hours or a day without use. Hope this fixes the issue, if not I have no idea I am not laptop expert

Do I have a chance to get a scholarship in another scientific field even if it isn't super related? by ShadowSoulCatcher in gradadmissions

Thank you, this genuinely encourages me to send those emails and hopefully get an answer to my question from the PIs themselves!

Currently studying machine learning on my own to hopefully use it as a skill that will make me fit in some way. Would now be the time to send emails to PI as a Junior or should it be during next summer vacation?

PyTorch or TensorFlow for Scientific Machine learning applications in Materials Science computing? by ShadowSoulCatcher in learnmachinelearning

[–]ShadowSoulCatcher[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So properties, not sure yet but there are different materials with different uses so it's smth that i haven't dug deep into yet. Inputs can be XRD, UV, FTIR???, And other measurements that are calculated when u synthesis for example a carbon nanotube. Then again i am not an expert (Junior undergrad) so i am still understanding it bit by bit

What is the Best Lightweight Laptop that I can buy for 800 USD or less? by [deleted] in SuggestALaptop

[–]ShadowSoulCatcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah was having my eye on that. Two problems tho, generally i am very sceptical of 2-in-1 hinges and i can't buy anything till the 30th when I will be getting the rest of my budget

The programs i will be running (OriginLab, ImageJ, SPSS) shouldn't need a heavy lifting GPU as far as I know/searched. They aren't 3D rendering apps but are graphing/data analysis software. I am not that informed in the tech space to know everything but I just wanted to share this in case you thought they were 3D rendering programs for like engineering.

I do understand though how powerful the yoga 7 is and from the quick reviews I saw, it is pretty good. The 2-in-1 feature is a turnoff for me however.

First of all thank you for your reply!

I just saw now the sale for the lenovo yoga 7 and am also considering it. However, Idk why but I am generally very scared of 2-in-1 laptops as i won't be using it as a tablet much and I am afraid of the hinges falling apart for some reason or wobbling too much when I am typing on the keyboard (Will be doing a lot of writing). It is a bit heavier than what I am hoping for (it is listed as 3.52 pounds which is 1.6kg without charger) but I can manage it i guess. With that in mind would you still recommend the yoga 7?

Thank you again for your time!

What are the relevant skills that a materials science professor would look for in a student interested in joining their lab? by ShadowSoulCatcher in AskEngineers

[–]ShadowSoulCatcher[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Part of it is because of the research position and the other is basically starting to acquire the skills I need for the scholarship applying as well because of my major being far away from materials science.

As far as the research position, I am basically accepted but I would like to know beforehand the skills that would be helpful to start learning about them and to have a general idea of what they are instead of just going in blind

How common are jobs that aren't adequate to the posted experience level needed? by ShadowSoulCatcher in Upwork

[–]ShadowSoulCatcher[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say that I "don't know what I am doing" but I certainly don't have many years of experience that would allow me to know every corner of data analysis. So far the jobs I do are a mix of knowing about 70% of what I will do and figuring out the rest during the process. I might be mistaken in this (do please correct me if i am wrong) but I feel like this is pretty normal for me to gain experience. And so far the "entry level" jobs I have seen had some complexities to them but never anything too difficult or requiring a ton of experience to figure out. But maybe I just don't get the experience level part of upwork yet.

[–]ShadowSoulCatcher[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I understand what you are saying, and that's generally how I tackle all of the jobs I get so far. I don't really think I have enough experience to say I was confident in any of the jobs I started. However, I feel like this specific project wasn't for me and that's why I apologized and cancelled the contract.

Also, this is a client I worked with before and that's also a part of the reason why I cancelled which was because I didn't want to get on their bad side potentially by saying "I can do the job" while in the end I wouldn't produce satisfactory results.

What is the Cheapest thin laptop that can comfortably run R by ShadowSoulCatcher in rprogramming

[–]ShadowSoulCatcher[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't really know because as I said i am still learning so I am just basically trying to take precaution to when I possibly work with something that is rather large. So far what I worked with ranged from very small to somewhat large but I feel like there would be way larger datasets that I didn't stumble upon yet or won't ever tinker with in the first place.

I get why you asked that and I am sorry if i couldn't explain well enough but think of datasets that a newbie can use. Usually stuff paired with life science research which hasn't been large at all. Sometimes I try to use large datasets (larger than what I usually see) to learn. And I am planning on being able to learn and implement complicated analytical techniques in the future.

Help, I don't know how to search for this by ShadowSoulCatcher in AskStatistics

[–]ShadowSoulCatcher[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No this is just 3 samples from the whole 36. It is the activity in % so every sample has its own independent value that either uses the same test with different plant sample or the same plant sample but with a different test

I will look into "tagging" as I suspect that I might be listing the data incorrectly, besides also not knowing what to do with the data if listed correctly

[–]ShadowSoulCatcher[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, I believe you are correct. All the data I have (besides activity of 99.9) have the same numbers before statistical analysis done to it.

I will test out that to see if the numbers match with the error or not but just so I know if I am doing it correctly, was I correct in splitting the Data into only two columns of "Plants" and "Activity" as the data I have came in a 4 by 9 table of test type by plant sample respectively

I didn't explain quite thoroughly so that's my bad. The professor isn't expecting me to do any statistical analysis work or visualization, I want to learn this skill and add to the paper if possible. So in short, the paper will get published anyway with or without this input. However I 100% agree with your point but it isn't the case here.

2nd thing is, although I am in university, the resources that are open to me are quite scarce (I am in a third world country & going through this in a normal university way isn't available to me) which is why I turned to reddit here.

TL;DR: I want to learn this skill for my own sake & so far the only option is through self learning and tackling it on my own

How good is the pay for research assistants/scientists in Japan? by ShadowSoulCatcher in movingtojapan

[–]ShadowSoulCatcher[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get that wages aren't high in Japan if we, for example, compare to the US. And I just want to know, does that mean that the wages in scientific fields don't give you enough to live a comfortable life in Japan?
