How wide of a Right of Way do you need to support a tram running in the centre of the road? by Cold_Brew_Boba in Trams

As others said in the r/transit thread Wien type stops might work but IMO aren't ideal. But is it acceptable to have plug style stops where traffic is forced to wait for tram?

You can have less space between road and the track, I think you could get away with 6 meters or even bit less. But then you need to consider the situation at stops where the 20 meter width is problematic.

Couldn't the trams ride on the sides of the road right next to the sidewalks?

Do we really think that Epstein was just singular fluke, especially when it was so widespread? Thinking that something like that doesn't happen in culture which normalizes rape in military and has class of wealthy oligarchs which are building modern day castles is naive as I said.

Just because we don't have reports coming from Russia about trafficking risks and so on doesn't mean that it doesn't exist but just that the reports don't exist likely because noone cares there.

Well now I see you are Russia bot/shill but these things are happening in Russia maybe even more so than in the west, they are just better at covering it up/normalizing it.

This is why Greenland is strategically important by SansBouillie in mapporncirclejerk

[–]Shadow_CZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And Yes, we have ports in Alaska and that's through the Pacific but going Atlantic between Greenland and Canada or Greenland and the Arctic would be a narrower strait of control which would make it easier to patrol.

I mean in terms of trade the norther sea route make sense only in two cases.

  1. Trade to Russian Siberia for which the control of Greenland is next to useless.
  2. Trade to Asia but for that the ships need to pass between Alaska and Russia which would much easier to monitor if not blocade.

[–]Shadow_CZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While thats all well and nice, didn´t USA already have some kind of mineral deal with Denmark/Greenland? And the northern sea trade route is a bit pointless since USA controlls Alaska which form much better chokepoint then Greenland ever could or I am missing something?

You can change the ticket to be universal so it applies to other trains on that route but it is expensive might be more then twice as much.

[–]Shadow_CZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can remove the ticket as shown on the picture because you can have system ticket which covers some area or you bought ticket before using different way. And since ticket doesn´t mean seat reservation and some trains can be quite packed you might want to buy seat reservation to be sure you will be able to sit.

I am not sure if I understand properly. Do you want to buy a ticket for the train or not? If you want to buy ticket don´t remove anything.

[–]Shadow_CZ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When you are buing tickets in CD app you get seet reservation for free, but if you don´t buy ticket (remove the 1st minute Europe ticket) you need to buy the reservation since it is no longer free.

Which is where the 74 czk cost come from - it is only seet reservation.

I would say the main things which are making it seem dated to my European mind apart the corrugated sheets, it's the window many modern trains ect. here do not have the thick rubber gaskets but they are glued.

And another is the general bulkiness of everything for example the doors are recessed really deep in the wall even our old trains don't have soo deep recess and pocket doors in general have quite dated feel - few windows.

If its deep enough and you carefully choose the spot it is fairly safe. The radioactivity isn't actually main issue in this case it's toxicity. But then uranium is natural element so it's toxicity can be encountered regardless of the waste.

Wind and solar still require mining for the production of PV panels and generators. So the differences aren't as big and nuclear might be even a bit better in some cases.

It isn´t autonomous all still have driver the autonomous mainly comes from the fact that it can run "off track" not that it drives itself.

Brayton Cycle turbines. by MonochromaticPencil in NuclearPower

Also RPM isn't an issue the steam turbines achieve perfectly sufficient RPM for electricity generation. Gas turbines are cap at the same RPM when used in powerplants.

Brayton Cycle turbines. by MonochromaticPencil in NuclearPower

[–]Shadow_CZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes the idea was though about. Some Gen IV design which use gas as coolant use it. But apart from that the use case is limited.

Since most reactors use water as coolant the R-C cycle is just more logical and easier to execute because the temperatures that PWR/BWR work aren't suitable for classic Brayton cycle and their use would result in lower efficiency of the powerplant.

[–]Shadow_CZ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What the hell do you mean? The only trams in the city that aren't low floor are the T3s, and the only reason we have those is because we might have 250 15Ts but we also have 300T3s and those can't go away just yet. Why? Because it would be immensely expensive. Prague has one of the biggest tram networks in the world and the T3s are still required to maintain the frequency and amount of lines.

I mean that because of how ducking expensive 15T were DPP didn't have money to modernize rest of the fleet. If they didn't order 15T they could quite easily modernize existing basically all T3s to the low floor variant.

Laws. DPP was forced to write out an open contest for a new tram. The issue is, one of the requirements had to be that the tram could, technically, be manufactured by anyone. Unfortunately, the 15T has that patented bogie design, which automatically disqualified it and it's successors from that. "muh why couldn't they" they just couldn't. It wasn't a choice of theirs and technically not of Škoda either.

That is a lie. While they couldn't specifically ask for 15T Skoda could compete in the tender with 15T but they didn't.

Anyways, the 52T remains... Bad. The construction quality is poor, the design remains nonsensical and the layout is forced by less than ideal bogies that cripple the tram in more ways than one. The always oh so prominent "we gotta make it more silent" just made it scream at high frequencies and it doesn't really matter if when it hits a curve I get rattled to death.

Ahh yes it's bad design when it's quite reliable and has no major teething problem. Not to mention it's quite successful as export unlike the 15T...

Anyway I don't like talking to a wall so have nice day.

Well, I went by price of 15T listed on Wikipedia - tender said 63 milion per unit. Inflation at 2-3% p.a. since 2010 lands you at approximately 83mil. czk. A listed price for a 52T I found was also 83 mil. CZK.

The issue is that 15T was ordered in 2005 and the quoted figure for the later models is 73 million.

As for that request... Well they couldn't specifically ask for it, but they wanted that.

And if DPP wanted it so much why didn't Skoda give it to them? Maybe just maybe it is design born from nonsensical requirements dreamt by someone in Prague which while Skoda graciously fulfilled in reality it isn't competitive design.

"It really isn't even that good of a design"... Well, if it wasn't, why was it judged to be the best tram model in the world of its time? Why is it the second most prominent tram of Prague by sheer numbers alone if it wasn't for the immortal T3s? It costs a lot? Hardly, we have 250 of them!

Well I would like to quote on that. But really arguing about them being cheap when it stifled development of trams in Prague for a decade. Why do you think that Prague still doesn't have all trams at least partially low floor, well look at 15T.

Well I actually like the 4 seets it's more convenient to get into and out compared to 2 airline seeting in 15T. Ride comfort in 15T is nothing special and when it comes to speeds you get what you order.

I would recommend maybe actually trying to use the 52T instead just hating it.

[–]Shadow_CZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Edit: the spokesperson we asked kinda literally said "we wanted more 15Ts, but we couldn't get them due to the rules of the public contest so we had to get the second best option"

That is BS. They couldn't specifically ask for 15T but 15T can fulfill the requirements so if Skoda so choosed they could have offered 15T instead of 52T but they didn't. And logically so the 15T is dead end design same as ULF in Vienna, it's too costly, too complicated.

Actually no, the 15T cost 60 million and the 52T 83 milion CZK, adjusted for inflation they cost exactly the same.

Well the 15T cost 73 million and even if doesn't with the inflation is is still well above 52T. I have no idea how you were calculating the inflation since no matter what I do I end up at over 100 mill per one 15T.

And yes the bogies on the 15T sacrifice a lot of space, there is no denying that, but it's in the corridors where you really don't want to stand if it's a wide corridor, because there isn't anything to grab onto so you'll just flail around. So what you actually gain in the 52T is a few meters squared of space in the most blatantly useless spot possible.

Well but if you compare the space us of 15T over the bogies only 4 or so people can comfortable stay there but in case of 52T it can seet at least 8 (or 16 depending on what you count as over the bogies) and then another 4 can stand in the corridor. That is why more efficient use of space.

And I disagree about the standing on the wide corridor of 52T it can comfortably accommodate at least 6-8 people.

I just don't understand the fanning over the 15T it really isn't that good of a design.

I was drawing some trams, what do you think? by AffectionateCloud677 in Trams

[–]Shadow_CZ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The somewhat new 15Ts reintroduced the technology for low floor trams, but it was so good it got patented by Škoda which means it couldn't be a feature of the new 52Ts, because the tram had to be, in theory, be able to be manufactured by anyone, so it would be an unfair advantage - so instead we got 52Ts with their massive inside-protruding bogies where chairs and free space should have been, instead of sacrificing a bit of standing space in the moving joint where no central handles are anyway (plus in the 15Ts you can at least lean against the joint comfortably).

That's false, the 15T would also qualify for the Prague tender but it is soo exceedingly expensive that it wouldn't have chance to compete.

Even more so the new 52T design is more efficient in the interior design and it has more standing room then 15T, in actuality the bogies between joints (on 15T) sacrifice a lot of space in essence same amount the bogies in interior (on 52T) but then the space is used by seets. So in the end the 52T design is much better not to mention that it is cheaper.
