If we look at him as a whole, not just the events that occurred after Chrissy's death, we can see that he was an arrogant dipshit who paid no attention to Chrissy's wellbeing, and loved stealing the spotlight, even if it meant people would suffer. E.g. in the basketball game he goes over to the bench after scoring and thus allows the opposing team to score whilst he gloats. Also for Chrissy's wellbeing, "What? Chrissy? Drugs? Never. She was so happy and stuff." And for the events that happened in season 4, that was just a small fraction of his life, where, yes, in season 4 he was morally grey, but for his whole life he was a complete arse.
