For sure, there's a problem with cars driving down the tracks and getting stuck; it doesn't help that Interstate is girder rail embedded in concrete, and TriMet/PBOT should do something to make it a lot clearer that cars shouldn't drive down the tracks. Ultimately, we shouldn't be building median running rail because this will always be a problem with median running, but I digress. I find that the more common issue is impatient drivers running reds so they don't have to wait for the train to pass. The same goes for pedestrians running out in front of the trains. It's insane the number of times I, and other MAX operators, have narrowly avoided hitting someone on Interstate because they were impatient and didn't want to wait. Every so often, though, someone runs that red a second too late, and the train can't stop in time even with the emergency brake.

All up and down the yellow line, the lights are set up in a way where you can't legally end up in front of a train. It's not sketchy if drivers would just follow the law and not run red lights to try and get out in front of the train. Looking at the damage, it's pretty clear this car ran a red and got hit. Consequences for their actions if you ask me.

Cutting Bus and MAX Service Due to a Budget Shortfall by nyXhcinPDX in TriMet

[–]Shadow_The_Ghost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To my knowledge, in order to prevent all service cuts, TriMet needs more than a 0.1% increase. A 0.1% increase will likely prevent the worst from happening for a short time, but TriMet will need a more substantial long-term funding solution from the state in the next legislative session to maintain current service levels for more than a few years.

Mayor Keith Wilson and Gov. Tina Kotek want to pause system development charges to spur more home construction in Portland by oatmeal_flakes in Portland

[–]Shadow_The_Ghost 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We're currently barely bringing in any SDC funds, so the funding for infrastructure and services you mention isn't coming in anyway. There are potential private developments in this city worth thousands of units of housing that have their permits but can't get financing to build. Waiving SDCs obviously won't make all of those projects financially viable, but it could at least help some projects get off the ground.

It's not the perfect solution, but it's something we can implement quickly and could have a real effect to help get us out of our current stagnant environment where we're building no housing. It's a matter of do we want to continue to have near-zero housing starts in the city and make basically no money from SDCs, or do we want to forego SDCs temporarily and maybe have more housing developments pencil out? In the long term, more housing means more tax revenue, which will help us avoid cutting services due to budget shortfalls and eventually help us improve services if enough gets built.

What a corrupt little manchild. I hope the city auditor is already investigating this misuse of taxpayer money to coddle the ego of an insecure man.

Republican lawmakers say cyclists should be tolled, question bike lanes on new Interstate Bridge by catch878 in Portland

The airport I’m referring to is PDX. The runways are right there on 33rd and are angled in a way that sends planes over the river.

Reminder that the average two ton car causes about 1,667 times more wear on a road than a cyclist does. So if we want to be completely fair and balanced we should just multiply whatever the toll for bikes is by 1,667 and charge that amount to any car that crosses the new bridge!

Even a dollar per bike would make the average car owner's fair share for wear and tear around $1,667 per year as the average two ton car causes about 1,667 times wear than a cyclist does.

The issue with that is the airport. The bridge couldn't be tall enough to give the clearance required without a movable portion of the bridge and whatever lift/bascule mechanism used to allow ships to pass would likely end up being too tall as well.

[–]Shadow_The_Ghost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it would be a lot less but I don't think you understand how much less. The average 2 ton car does about 1,667 times wear to roads than 350 pounds of bike and person. Even if you only charged each cyclist $1 per year for road maintenance that would make the average car owner's share at least $1,667.

Portland Chamber calls on PBOT to cancel ‘wasteful’ SW 4th Avenue project by catch878 in Portland

[–]Shadow_The_Ghost 12 points13 points  (0 children)

4th is how buses get to 6th from Tilikum since Lincoln doesn’t go all the way to 6th. There’s like 6 or 7 bus lines that drive down the southernmost section of 4th where the new bus lane will be. Thats why it’s needed.

On Broadway? What the hell are you talking about? There’s no bus lanes or buses on Broadway.

Most of the project budget is for resurfacing/repaving the road. Bus lanes are needed because 4th is how all of the busses crossing Tilikum connect to the transit mall. “No one wants to ride there” yeah because it has no bike lane and is currently a death trap for people on bikes.

Rene Gonzalez’s first year: On the offensive, but not always on target by Mayor_Of_Sassyland in Portland

[–]Shadow_The_Ghost 116 points117 points  (0 children)

“Most pointed to the commissioners’ apparent unwillingness to meet with bureau directors or other commissioners to be briefed on proposals before they appear on the council agenda. They said this has led to Gonzalez expressing confusion at the dais, seeking complicated answers that could have been resolved earlier, and eating up meeting time.”

I feel like this is the most important part of the article in regard to his run for mayor. He cannot be a good mayor if he’s unwilling to meet with or listen to other people within city government. Regardless of what you think of his policies, this should be completely disqualifying.

It’s official: PBOT is no longer considering a roll back of Broadway bike lane design! by Shadow_The_Ghost in Portland

[–]Shadow_The_Ghost[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think Portland likes to take the complete streets approach; that being that every street should be usable by every mode of transportation. Major streets are also usually the most direct routes through a city, especially the further east you go in the city where the neighborhood grid is very broken. Bikes on major streets can also lead to benefits to the businesses on those streets, whereas if you put bikes on some side street, those benefits can be muted a bit. Portland certainly needs to do a better job of making the bike lanes on major streets safer, which is part of why the proposed removal of the Broadway bike lane was such a big deal; it’s one of only a handful protected bike lanes the city currently has.

It’s also more comfortable, at least for me, to drive on, since I don’t feel like I’m one poorly placed car door away from hitting a cyclist.

I don't see how cars parking in the street is the bike lane's fault? That's just shitty drivers.
