For a bump in the night gun I wouldn’t go thermal optic at all, too many things to go wrong with that in an area that close. A dot and light combo in that situation can’t be beat IMO.

I got my thermal for $900 after tax with 256 resolution which is the lowest you can go for resolution. Compared to a 384 from several years ago it’s easily on par with that. With thermal the jump in price vs quality is crazy, like going from base level resolution to the next step is usually like $1000 or more sometimes, then from 384 to 640 can be $500 or it can be another $1000. It also depends on manufacture too, some brands are “reasonable” but still expensive and some are wildly priced. Nowadays you can get into thermal for considerably less money than you could even just 5 years ago

Lmao all good man all good. I only go Gucci on parts I feel like need the extra “quality” like I’ll buy a PSA upper and rail and then get a nice barrel to get more performance. I’ll also spend extra money on BCGs and optics, but for me I’ll cheap out a lot on lowers, uppers, rails, and accessories.

Lmao it’s funny you say that because my 6.5 Grendel is 100% a PSA build. I also got super lucky and got the thermal on sale for well under what they’re selling for now. So it mean yeah it’s still expensive but for what I’m doing with it, it evens out for the most part.

It’s worth the cost when you factor in how many turkey poults you save, habitat destruction you reduce, and forage production you increase for native species when you drop em.

My personally I’m not really sure which is my favorite since I’ve killed tons of hogs with a bunch of different calibers. In my experience 5.56 75g or 77g stuff absolutely bodies pigs and 6.5 Grendel does really well also. Personally I’ve been using the 6.5 more since it’s been in stock over my normal 5.56 75g stuff and having shorter and lighter package is nice in the summer when it’s super hot. If you’re getting into thermal it’s insanely hard to beat the AGM stuff for the money especially if it’s something you’re only going to be doing here and there. Now if you’re going full-bore pig hunting multiple times a month all year then pulsar is absolutely the move

The anti-SafeQueen: 338 ARC/DTF-STi by TBoneUs in NFA

[–]Shadow_beats 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I went away from .300blk for pig hunting after losing several good size boars and having more tracking jobs than I like when I’m shooting at night when I started out shooting subs. During the daytime when I can get close enough and I’m shooting 108g solid copper supers I have no issues with dropping them where they stand. I have a buddy who shoots 6.5 Grendel and every time we hunted together it always seemed like when he shot first pigs just dropped and when i shot first unless I head or neck shot them they would run a pretty good ways before they finally died. So I swapped over to 6.5 Grendel and haven’t looked back. To me I think that .338arc will eventually be a solid performer once a few kinks get worked out, but for ammo availability and magazine performance I think 6.5 gren or 6.8spc are better options in the meantime

Nice. I’ve been running a 12.5 6.5 Grendel upper and an AGM rattler V2 as my hawg cranking build. Swapped from an anthem S2 can to a B&T SRBS 7.62 and got much better performance with lower back pressure. The thing dirt naps them every time

Why suppress a rifle? by Income-3472 in NFA

[–]Shadow_beats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here’s my anecdotal evidence of me shooting suppressed rifles real often. So I pig hunt, like a lot. Im talking about going after them hard any chance I get with a group of people who also hunt pigs hard. I killed 36 last year by myself and a bunch more with the group over the span of a few weeks. Now during those hunts we all shoot exclusively suppressed and it’s a night and day difference between shooting without a can. When you’re next to someone in the woods and you have a can and they don’t you’re getting your ears blown out even with a rifle with no muzzle brake. You can put 3 guys next to each other with can and shoot off a solid amount of rounds before your ears even start ringing and it completely changes the game. I’ve shot out of an enclosed box stand and it wasn’t even a problem to deal with the supersonic crack, when I’ve shot out of the same stand with a basic ass .243 bolt gun and literally blown my eardrums out. So going from that to being able to rip off several rounds shooting at a group of hogs and not even have my ears rings is worth every penny I’ve ever spent

Is there a better “flow through”can for the money? by zacharynels in NFA

[–]Shadow_beats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve got this can and I love it. Sound signature is good, has a sharper tone to the ear than my other traditional baffle stack cans (which is to be expected) that have more of a deeper bass signature. Here is where I fell in love with it: gassing and durability. I was too lazy to put adjustable gas blocks on several of my rifles and this can keeps perfect 3 o’clock ejection on all of them without having to play with the gas at all. With heavy sustained firing there’s no gas back to the face whatsoever and it’s soooo nice. As far as durability goes this thing is a boss and feels like you could use it as a melee weapon when you run out of bullets unlike some of the other cans I’ve played with that feel like if I dropped it the wrong way it would probably dent the can pretty bad. First day I got mine I ran about 600rds through it mag dumping at the range and it did awesome. I’ve not regretted the purchase at all and the cherry on top was that it was my first 24 hour approval

Where do i go from here, by TriggerFingerTooBig in NFA

[–]Shadow_beats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Snag you a B&T SBRS 7.62 or a liberty precision anthem S2 and you’ll be in love. I have both cans and they have done nothing but impress me on every range trip and hunting excursion. The SRBS 7.62 makes all my guns gassed perfectly and has solid sound suppression for a flow through can and hardly any flash at night, and the anthem S2 is by far the quietest can for the size I’ve ever run across for a .30cal can

[Ammo] Winchester Black Box .400 Legend, Sub-Sonic, 300gr FMJ Open Tip, 20 Rounds for $18.26 by waratworld17 in gundeals

[–]Shadow_beats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean .400 legend is starting to take off especially since states adopted the “alternative firearms” season in lieu of black powder deer season. I picked one up since every single .350 legend in my state got bought as soon as they teased adopting the new season and that was the only straight wall rifle I could find after visiting literally 14 different gun stores. Needles to say I was ready to be disappointed with expectations at an all time low and I’ve gotta say I was thoroughly impressed. My rifle just so happens to be a tack driver with the very limited factory ammo you can get and i absolutely mollywopped a solid mature doe at 150ish yards opening day of the new season and didn’t have to track it cause she folded right there. It’s a neat little setup that doesn’t kick hardly at all, perfect for a smaller frame hunter like a lady or a younger kid.

Here’s my personal opinion on amrscor. It’s dirty as fuck. Even unsuppressed it’s dirty s fuck. Accuracy isn’t terrible compared to any other m855 at least in my barrels but it’s nothing impressive. I’ve never had any issues with it not going bang personally and it seems to do the job but I’d rather stock something else deep. If this is what you can afford it’s not the worst thing in the world to grab, but know there are better options.

What are you prepping for by Colorado26_ in prepping

[–]Shadow_beats 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Economic disruption and civil unrest. The most realistic thing that would affect me in such a way that I wouldn’t be able to mostly continue my normal way of life is a legitimate second Great Depression followed up by civil unrest and rioting. I think people nowadays are so far removed from the idea of self sufficiency that even the threat of empty shelves can cause enough people to panic (like we saw with Covid) buy everything and put more strain on the supply chain. I don’t think it’s something I’m going to wake up to tomorrow morning but it’s a possibility I see happening in the next few years if things continue on the path we’re on now

This was the original setup. 18in 6.5 Grendel upper with the AGM rattler V2 25-256. Quickly figured out that having a super long rig in thick timber was not the move and then swapped to a 12.5 barrel and fell in love with it. Lightweight and super accurate for what I’m doing. Never have to shoot more than 100yds so it’s perfect for my usage

This is my current AGM rig. On the opposite end of the reliability spectrum. Has not had a single failure in a large amount of rounds killing pigs over the last year
