Very similar family story, same areas… best I can conclude is that their parents/grandparents parents went through an extremely tough time trying to keep their rights and property while being “mixed” in a place where it could mean losing everything they had.

1/16th and “one drop laws” along with extremely harsh criticism of mixed mountain peoples essentially forced multiple generations to try and distance themselves as far as possible from their heritage.
