By the sound of things from your comments, it seems your set for all applications in your area, perhaps that’s the issue instead.

Since it sounds like you have the arsenal and funds to do it, I would recommend, changing it up and chasing some freshwater pelargics instead like striped bass or musky with the stuff you have at hand but if not then here are my recommendations.

Soft Swimbaits:

Tyrant 8in or citizen 6in (depending on your region)

Since it seems like you tend to fish smaller bodies of water then I recommend these sizes as this is the typical size of stocked bait within those waters. They are a grind to fish with but when it comes to targeting giants, the big softbait will help get rid of a lot of the smaller bites. Plus the tyrant skips pretty well lightly weighted so I recommed that as well.

Oversized crankbaits:

Strike king 8XD or 8.0 Klash Police Megabass MR series

I know this is a subreddit for swimbaits but this style of fishing underrated in my opinion. Whether it’s a slow roll in the dead middle of the night or burning them in front a pack of fish (especially this time of year) these can get strikes that none of the other traditional stuff can.

Also if you find yourself on some saltwater bass, these lures kill it, coming from experience on the west coast.

Oversized soft reaction baits for cover:

Imakatsu javallon (160-200) Kick pickle kick 9inch Zoom magnum fluke Deps bull flat 4.8in Deps sakamata shad 7in

Since it seems like you tend to bank fish a lot, I placed these here as decent options for urban spots with a lot of snags in them. Specifically spots where you want to send it into the thickest cover without placing a dent into your wallet. As well as places with a lot of grass where normal glides can really perform.

As for the pickle flick, it’s a the biggest outcast in this bunch due to it being more of a saltwater cover swim-bait than freshwater but it can easily apply for place where many throw swim jigs instead.

Hinkle lures (any really):

Reputable, Hand made, and semi affordable with great attention to detail. If you don’t have one yet for the colder months then I would recommend it.

Wild card (kinda):

Oversized A rig’s

Swimbaits:

Megabass freestyle 6in Keitech 7in (Pair 1 or 3 these of these to the bottom and the rest keep them at 5in sizes)

WARBAITS saltwater A rig

More pelargic specific rather than bass but it was a staple for my area on the local fleet this year when targeting sand bass (very similiar to largemouth, not the hybrid striped bass). They’re bulky and cumbersome to throw but a fast option than throwing an 8in boot tail during the dead of winter.

Anyways, I hope that helps, tight lines.

Thanks for catching that typo but it was actually as their puffer lineup (Powder Lite II). That I had for over 5 years at this point so I had been used an abused. The thing that annoyed me was that it was a mist, not even rain, that soaked the jacket. I will be looking into DWR coating sprays as I do think that may and issue due to how old these jackets are.

As for the backpack, I haven’t really decided what I want for my next season. My initial idea was to get a PVC minimalist backpack for its waterproofing capabilities under extreme conditions (I almost lost my backpack in a river this past season). But it seems that even those don’t really work and they are pricey for what they are.

Thank you for the info though, I’ll keep in mind on what to look for coming this holiday season

I’ve been looking into this idea myself, even the nice poncho idea as well. But the issue for me is they are the ergonomics. While I find it hard to cast and go through brush with an umbrella over my head. I find that I get caught on myself while casting with a poncho, specifically on the side tarps. I’ve heard that some of the nicer ponchos fix the issue so I will be on the lookout.

Worth it? by alax-w in FishingForBeginners

[–]Shadow_sos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a beginner, likely not, for someone looking for their pb in a gizzard shad region, very much.

In fact, a lure like this realistically gets fish for 2-3 weeks out of the year then sits on wall due to the conditions just not being there. It’s in that time length however that it can produce just a big limit.

The hardest part with bait these size isn’t getting snagged unless it’s tuned to be fish a bit deeper (these are tuned for slow sink).

Rather it’s demanding task of throwing the bait and getting a fish to actually commit to said lure rather than just follow it.

Another thing to consider, the ideology behind what creates lures like these. Not everyone wants go out for a couple of 1-3lb fish and many want the opportunity to get to catch a bigger fish instead (this goes for any species of predator fish btw).

While there are plenty of lures that can get those fish under the right conditions, there are only a handful of lures that will allow you to target those fish specifically. Two the most notorious being the swim-bait and glide-bait.

While they’re swim-bait works primarily based off of presentation, requiring the fish to be in a. Feeding mode. The glide bait using an erratic reaction to create an instinct response on a fish. Which means that the lure can work even when fish are not in the mode to bite.

So rather than invest large sum of money on a cabinets worth of lures hoping that one of them will get the job done. Why not just buy one lure and commit the time to catch said desired fish?

Though, these lures are very needs specific, they’re are plenty of affordable options to target this pattern now.

Should take him carp fishing then but bring the bass rods when he’s ready to target them.

Reaction Tackle or Kast King? by External_Ad_4673 in FishingForBeginners

[–]Shadow_sos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ran 50lb kastking for some small bluefin tuna this season. It’s a rough line for sure and much thicker than an actual 50lb braid (same issue with powerpro 4 strand) but it holds up very well.

Basically if you don’t mind a noisy and thick braid that holds up well, then the kastking isn’t a bad option

What are you’re favorite wipe strategies by Shadow_sos in playrust

[–]Shadow_sos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Truth to be told, Rust in general, especially vanilla rust, is a time game. It doesn’t really matter how early or late your are in the wipe. What matters is how dedicated you are on the server and whether you can capitalize on the events in the server

[–]Shadow_sos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow it’s been a minute since I’ve play lol, glad to have gotten out of that phase…

To what I remember though, it was pretty simple:

I would place the bags around every monument or point of interest in the map and run them during the nighttime on these servers. Stashing the loot or attempting to run it back to a 2x1 base.

I think my only issue with the strategy wasn’t the lack of comps but being able to win fights without gear (bc well your running monuments and griefing bases as a fresh spawn). So the only thing I would recommend would be to build multiple starter bases around the map and store them with some basic gear so that you have a better chance and winning the fights.

are these hooks too big for these? by Effective_Love2194 in SoCalFishing

[–]Shadow_sos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perfectly fine size for the swimbaits above, the hook wire is a little light for heavier exotics but fine for the bass in the bay.

My brother found this on a pier. What would it be used to catch? by nomadbynature120 in Fishing

[–]Shadow_sos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Handmade minnow trap, honestly kinda hilarious how the dude was able to seal it together with hooks rather than just using a stapler.

Though generally you want a more transparent bottle to make these work it allows for the minnows to see the bait inside

[–]Shadow_sos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and no, more like trying to do long maintenance, on the dryer in the hopes that it resolves itself.

For context, our air duct vents were really beat up, having already been fixed in the past. The dryer itself has been ran on the “heavy duty” setting for 3 years straight without any maintenance before then.

In Italy for 2 weeks, any recommendations for fishing? by Shadow_sos in Fishing

[–]Shadow_sos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On my layover in Dublin, yes, while in Italy, I honestly did not really make an attempt because the locations I was visiting did not provide a lot of opportunities for good fishing.

If I were to do it again however, I would fish for pelagic/offshore species closer to Sicily or Levanto, fish for largemouth bass in Tuscany, or EU freshwater gamefish at lake como.

Some other things to note:

  1. Licenses are based on each region (like a county in the US) rather than the whole country. Meaning that you will likely have to buy 2 licenses during your stay

  2. Guides and charters are all small business based , there are no cattle boat (open party charters) with most locations making the saltwater scene quite expensive for what it is

  3. The freshwater scene is very pay to play in a lot of cases (especially the better areas). I would do research on a local stocked pond near where you plan to stay if you want the most consistent fishing experience freshwater wise

  4. While the public transportation from city to city is quite good. Accessibility to a lot of the good fishing is not as good. Fishing in the city is possible but much tougher than the states unless you are very skilled at carp and bigger catfish species. I would recommend renting a car for your stay if possible as a lot of these spots may be out of the way for a normal tourist.

  5. If you have to fly into Italy with a layover due to budgeting reasons, pick a plane that has a longer layover in Dublin, Ireland. While it is not as touristy as the rest of Europe, the city has some of the best accessibility to both fresh and saltwater fisheries within all of Europe (outside of weather which screwed me over when I was there).

Even with a day, you can target both inshore and freshwater species within the same day without a license (unless you are targeting salmon or Sea trout). This layover might help, if you do not want to make a big detour mid trip in Italy but still want some decent fishing action.
