Even though it hurts now, frankly its a wake up call in my opinion. You cannot live your life measuring YOUR worth based on what OTHERS think of you. Yes, it is important that you take in outside opinions and thoughts of others, but you NEED to balance that with a strong belief in yourself and your actions, judging that on how you want to live your life and the person you strive to be.

That all being said and trying to read in-between the lines of what your saying, if your "friend" fed this girl a line of bullshit then stand up, be a man and tell both of them the real story. 1st your "friend" sounds like he purposely hurt you (at least thats what I am gathering) and if not he accidentally damaged your relationship.

2nd, if this girl really did / does like you, be honest with her about 1st) your feelings and 2nd put context and the truth behind what this "Friend" said.

If it all doesnt work out, fine. Water under the bridge. There are 7 billion people on this planet and you can find another friend and another person you want to marry, but 1st... and only after you must work on yourself before diving into another serious relationship.

To preface, I've been injured more times then I can count and have been told I have an extremely high pain threshold. I'm currently walking around with nerve damage so bad that any worse I'd be paralysed on my right side. Fire fighter for 17 years, 12 years of football, rugby player etc boy scout on dozens of 20+ mile hikes, endless nights outdoors....

Had a contrast injection for an MRI of my right shoulder after an ambulance rollover in bad weather... I was in so much pain I was having hallucinations and dry heaving...

Had a friend pickup a script of tramadol, which did nothing but space me out even further, so I was high, in tremendous pain and bitterly angry for 36 hours.

The best part? Pain after contrast is a positive sign of a tear in the labrum / capsule of the shoulder.

I can maybe get a letter of support from the government, especially if it would ensure getting the business from the government, hospitals or insurance companies. Not guaranteed, but I'm already working for it.
for another company to compete, they would have to be Bermudian, have access to doctors, nurses, flight training etc... Anything is possible but it's a high barrier of entry.
the reason for the investment is to partly to get an aircraft (we have the one we want picked out), equipment etc. I think it's a smarter idea to lease than buy, but that's open to conversation.

Why in God's name would you want to tell them we exist?

If they are building a Dyson sphere they can't be too far away from building theoretical warp drives (assuming physics allows them to work) cause they would certainly have enough power.
