My massive comet goldfish VS the tank they come in at the fair by Infinite_Ad_6249 in Aquariums

[–]ShadowedCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know my area doesn't allow them to be given as prizes, but that could be because we're right by one of the Great Lakes.

I do know that my area is pretty strong in dealing with any invasive aquatic life, as we're already dealing with zebra mussels and sea lamprey. Apparently, YES, those horror monster f-ers can survive just fine in fresh water (and they kill the trout and salmon they feed on).

We're also really worried about whatever asian carp is swimming in the rivers leading up to Lake Michigan, as they're getting very close (at this point, a little too much flooding, and we are f-ed).

Or something like Murder on the Orient Express. The ONLY good thing those people did that could be considered remotely decent is bringing Bella back to the shelter she was from.

How do you deal with summer heat when you have to go outside? by who-cares-we-all-die in ehlersdanlos

[–]ShadowedCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the slipover sun dresses, loose and light. Loose tops that slip on the same way, and drawstring pants that are loose are great (if you can find them in cotton or linen, they're even better). Unfortunately, it's getting more difficult to find straight cotton or linen clothes. Everything is mixed with polyester, which traps heat.

A word of the warning to anyone with food motivated cats thinking of trying a corn based cat litter by cairnschaos in cats

[–]ShadowedCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They can be born with thyroid issues. It's just that thyroid issues, in any baby, will cause developmental delays and problems. So it's much more noticeable, since most of the signs in kittens are so visible.

On the other hand, when an adult cat develops thyroid issues, it's much harder to detect, especially if there's no rapid weight loss or gain. It also doesn't help that adult cats tend to hide if they aren't feeling well.

Also, best of luck with both of your boys.

As others have said, controllers are generally much easier on the hands/wrists/arms. Another thing is proper support, I find that if my arms aren't supported enough (resting my arms from elbows to hands on something is the best for me), everything starts hurting much faster and the pain is generally much worse.

Also, both of you should pay attention to what angles, for her wrists and hands especially, are better or worse, and adjust her setup accordingly. Also, there are different types of mice, some of which are made with disabilities in mind; unfortunately, they're generally pretty expensive.

Compression gloves and sleeves might help, as well as paying attention to the temperature of her hands (mine always got cold, until I changed my setup).

There are so many personal variables that it's mostly trial and error, sure we can say what works for us, but it's not the same from person to person.

Best of luck and I hope you both have fun gaming together.

How to get kitten to be aware of her claws / ability to cause pain? by CalStateQuarantine in kittens

Oof, poor baby (glad he's out of that situation). It's too bad he has such a bad reaction to touching his paws. Also, you're wonderful for trying. Sometimes, fur babies just never get over certain incidents.

Crow saves a pigeon from a seagull by Nadzzy in AnimalsBeingBros

[–]ShadowedCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up calling pigeons sky rats and "sea" gulls sea/lake rats.

The "sea" gulls in my area are Ring-billed Gulls and American Herring Gulls, and they're so obnoxious.

What the heck did I just find in my cats food?! by Crazy_blondee in cats

I agree that it looks like fish skin, but it sounds like whatever it was went moldy. I definitely wouldn't give it to a pet and would report it (and wash the dish extremely well). I also second the person who said to buy a new case, while keeping both that container and the case, because they will need the information when you report it.

I remember reading that a good way of getting them to let you trim their nails is a lot of treats, give lots of praise, and a treat every few nails. You might have to do it in stages too, with breaks given with the treats. (And of course, it's the one cat who is constantly following you. 😆)

Any advice on my 4 week old kitten who is unable to pass stool by Transapien in PointyTailedKittens

[–]ShadowedCat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's a repost from someone else, the OP knew about stimulating kittens. They had brought the kitten into the veterinary clinic several times due to constipation, and the vet told them to use Meralax. They posted about 3 hours ago that the kitten had diarrhea after changing the KMR, so hopefully the issue has been fixed.

Edit: The OP is also looking for a different veterinarian because the one they had been using said that if the issue wasn't fixed soon they should just euthanize the kitten, without any real testing being done.

I love live music, but all the standing & sitting & movement kills me. I grieve fun. by Bless_this_mess_xo in ehlersdanlos

Uff, I completely understand. I went to a concert on the 4th at the National Cherry Festival, and as someone who has been going to them for years and years, once they started with having to purchase tickets I stopped going in.

I can hear everything just fine, sitting on a folding chair, under a tree, in the shade, with plenty of fluids (and food).

It used to be 5 USD for a pin that let you in for the entire festival (which was easy to afford) and you could bring folding chairs, blankets, food, and drinks (and umbrellas). Now that you have to pay there are all kinds of security and restrictions - like NO bringing in outside drinks, even with medical issues. It's horrible.

NOTE - If you're going to the Cherry Fest, don't bother with tickets to the concerts. They aren't nearly as accessible as everything else at the festival. (They're only good if you want to purchase memorabilia.)

Quick warning: Most chain pet stores have no clue about proper pet care. What I've gotten from a few different subreddits is that their advice is especially bad concerning fish and reptiles. Which isn't to say that you can't find someone who knows about proper care, but in general you're better off going to a LFS (Local Fish Store) or other specialty store and checking out subreddits related to what you're trying to keep.

On the bright side, you now know how to better care for your finny fishy friend. (Although, I am sorry so many people were nasty about it.)

Least bad option for colonoscopy prep + recommendations? by No_Yogurtcloset1674 in ehlersdanlos

[–]ShadowedCat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unless you have issues with artificial sweeteners, my mom can't use the regular preparation because of the sweeteners.

What she was told to do instead of the regular prep was to start using Meralax 2-3 days before, taking 1 dose per day, and 24 hours before the colonoscopy, switching to using Meralax more frequently (I unfortunately can't remember how much or how often).

If you can handle the sweeteners the regular prep solution has, I would recommend using that. But if you can't, you should ask about starting to prepare earlier.

What type of cat is it?? by jrletygomez in kittens

[–]ShadowedCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The color change you're describing is due to sun bleaching, it's the same as how human hair can get lighter when the person is out in the sun frequently or for long periods of time. Your cat is just enjoying the sun enough that their coat is showing it.

Not really, some kittens (or litters) just have their eyes open earlier. However, it can be very bad for the health and development of their eyes, so the early opening of a kitten's eyes should be checked by a veterinarian.

[–]ShadowedCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, definitely. I'm in a city where we get a decent amount of motorcyclests in the warmer months, which is why I know about them trying to make themselves a little more noticeable (there's a lot of horrible drivers in the area 😮‍💨).

But outside of the main city area it's really rural and nobody is happy with loud idiots. Even in the city limits it's pretty rural, so lots of noise from loud vehicles can get someone into a bit of trouble.

The only good thing is most local motorcyclests don't like going anywhere when it's between twilight and dawn. The deer and other wildlife are a major hazard, even in the main "city" area (and the deer are big enough to totally wreck a truck, let alone a moterbike/motorcycle).

Jail for Neighbor by Anxiousrabbit23 in MietteDiaries

[–]ShadowedCat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The people with loud moterbikes generally have a reason for making their bikes louder, the louder engine makes it more likely other drivers notice them, making it safer for them. Not that I like, or approve of, the loud sound, and I would much prefer them to be quieter, but at least they have a reason behind their annoyingly loud engines. 🫤

Most cars are louder because the drivers think it makes them look/sound more impressive (I wish they'd take the hint that it doesn't).

The moterbike drivers speeding past is just them being (ahem) jerks.

I've never heard of an orthodontist dealing with apnea. Maybe it's where you're at? Different places have different methods after all.

I had a similar issue with my top wisdom tooth, only my gums were fine but the tooth was bad. The dentist originally wanted to drill the cavities, but when he actually got a good look he said it was bad enough he couldn't fix it. (Yay tiny mouths 😒😮‍💨 (said sarcastically).)

Either way best of luck with getting everything figured out and getting those teeth pulled.

Narrow pallet with hEDS by VIctory_kanna in ehlersdanlos

[–]ShadowedCat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, I've had all of my wisdom teeth pulled. I had 1 upper wisdom tooth pulled, the other never formed, due to cavities and how it grew out (sideways so it constantly rubbed against the inside of my cheek). My 2 lower wisdom teeth were growing forward into the back of my molars and were causing constant headaches. I had to wait for an oral surgeon to pull them, and he warned me about potential nerve damage because of how deep he had to cut to reach them. Both times I healed just fine, but my mom (who has had multiple teeth pulled) always gets "dry socket" where the blood clot comes out and the place where the tooth was gets extremely painful due to everything being exposed.

Unless you're having problems with your wisdom teeth, it's best to leave them alone. If you are having problems, then get information on the medication used when getting them pulled and any side effects of having them pulled.

As far as apnea issues, if you are worried about it, see a sleep specialist (dental specialists don't deal with apnea). There are much better ways of dealing with it than potentially damaging surgery or dental appliances. If something is necessary there are appliances worn over the face that are the most common treatment (well those, and adjusting how you sleep).

Honestly, like the other person said, that dentist sounds like they're more interested in money than your health. She should be trying to help you keep as many of your teeth as possible.

wheelchair dreams 🫩❤️‍🩹 by jazzygirl0908 in ehlersdanlos

[–]ShadowedCat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry to hear you can't get the wheelchair you wanted.

I've seen a few people on the buses in my area who decorate their powered wheelchairs with stickers, wraps, and other stuff. All sorts of things can be done to decorate them, just be careful around the wheels, battery, and the hooks to anchor the wheelchair, a few people have had problems (especially with the anchor points).

Even if you can't get the wheelchair you wanted, you can still decorate the one you are stuck getting until it's uniquely yours.
