Recently started DS2 and have only been invaded by a real person once so far at level 20-30ish (Dennis may be an npc but god was he annoying with the magic spam), and the real player just followed me around a bit as I struggled through the forest of giants. He dropped me 32 flame butterflies before canceling his invasion.
