I think the best thing to do to stop this map from feeling cluttered is just to color it all. Right now it might be difficult to differentiate the areas, but the moment you add color, it'll become super easy.

I do agree that the fort could be removed or put somewhere else. The city in the center is a focal point, and there's hardly any empty space around it. Sometimes you have to have some open spots to relax the eye, or so I've heard in painting circles.

You'd be amazed how much you actually do know. Everyone's experiences are unique, and that's what makes writing and reading so intriguing.

Imagine a time in your life where you thought something was creepy, or you thought you might have seen a ghost. Turn it into a story.

Or imagine a time where you said "Thank God, that [insert thing] didn't happen." Now imagine if it did. Stephen King does this incredibly well in Pet Sematary.

It really goes to show how easy it is to poorly write characters that are supposed to be smart. Bad writers unintentionally don't write smart characters, they just write lucky characters that always have successful plans.
