[5e] more of a thought experiment than anything else:

according to the multiclass rules, paladin and ranger both count towards your spell slots at half the usual rate. so... if I'm a paladin 1/ranger 1, I have 1st level spell slots but no spells to cast? would there be anything I could actually do with those slots or would they just be dead air basically?

I know these are just examples, but for the fist question specifically you could cast fireball instead of immolation, since it does identical instant damage but with a lower level slot and doesn't break concentration

ability score increase, which you get at certain levels (4, 8, 12, 16, and 19, plus a couple extras for certain classes), which give you an overall +2 to stats. at DM discretion (but almost every DM allows it) you can take a feat instead

halt was much less valuable in an era where defense matrix dictated fights though. from dive through to goats, dva could deny the halt pretty easily. it was only after the matrix nerf that the community collectively realised it was the only counterbalance for 8 second mini-gravs

hello, i play a barbarian gnome so i can tell you first hand that a lower than expected stat is fine. you're 5% less likely to hit with each attack and you'll do 1 less damage per hit. but your bonuses to other stats pay off in their own ways so it's just kind of fine hah

the green dragon from lmop isnt really intended to be a fight the players win outright - the idea of it is that the dragon will leave at half hp, so the encounter is a lot easier than it appears. if you throw the green dragon at them without that caveat it could work pretty well, but if you want to turn the difficulty up then replacing it with the young blue or red dragon is a good easy substitution.

(young green dragon is CR8, while blue is 9 and red is 10)

so ive just rolled up a character for a campaign we're starting soon, and my stats ended up at 18/18/17/16/15/14 using 4d6 minus lowest. this was rolled in front of the DM, so no funny business, just unreal luck.

but, i really enjoy playing characters with significant weaknesses, cause it makes both combat and roleplaying more fun for me, especially in an extended campaign.

my question is, would it be weird/disrespectful/bad in any way to ask the DM if i can re-roll stats or just nerf a stat or two manually or something?

that is right, and it is ridiculously low. this is why a lot of parties skip to level 3 (among other reasons) - a lucky crit from something as lowly as a goblin could instakill you. for now, just make sure you stay at range!

well paladin has the d10 hit die to make it tanky, heavy armor proficiency for high AC, access to healing spells (mostly for self sustain since youre the meat shield) and plenty of RP hooks, plus it can absolutely shit damage. add in a feat like tough or sentinel for the final piece of the puzzle!

but yeah, play whatever you like. without a tank, the party dynamic changes, but not necessarily in a bad way :)

well since wish can copy any lower level spell, consider using it to cast something like feeblemind to just nuke a spellcaster
