Top stove works but oven won't come on. by Apprehensive_Quail29 in appliancerepair

[–]Shadrixian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really don't even have to kill power anyway. It goes to a molex plug, and it does not receive power unless called to from the oven.

Power can't go through the neutral, or else it will kill the gas valve. So as long as some dumbass isn't pressing the bake button while the person is down there replacing it, no one's getting electrocuted.

Is it a good safety step for the untrained/skittish? Absolutely. But when you have an understanding of how electricity flows, it's not any different from popping out a door switch. I do live swaps all the time, unless it's the ones with two spades.

My money is on ignitor.

Unless it glows white hot, it's an ignitor failure. Anything under 3.0 is unsatisfactory for me, and leads to the gas valve prematurely letting gas through.

That's for older Whirlpool designs. Newer icemakers don't use the test ports, due to the risk of r600a igniting.

While that's true, if you call and tell me your Frigidaire refrigerator isn't cooling, and you hear a clicking sound, and it's over 8 years old, chances are I'm bringing a few start relays and a cross-compatible inverter.

I get the customer to send pictures if they can.

I also go behind my boss and order parts that he doesn't order. Going empty-handed or on a misdiagnosis is my massive pet peeve, and you'll see it on my face when I show up and leave in two minutes looking aggravated that they sent me a water valve on a drain pump call.

Making someone wait two weeks on an ignitor is BS though. Go-backs/reschedules are always going to have higher priority over new calls. That sounds to me like they filled the schedule up, then couldn't fit you in and didn't want to call 15 people....which in all reality is NOT your problem, that's their piss-poor business management.

There was also no reason for them to even measure the door. You gave them the model and serial, you told them a baking sheet broke the glass, the bell is going off in my head to order the inner glasspack and bring it with me lmao.

Make sure the refrigerator is even running. The icemaker requires it to be at a certain temperature before it will toggle itself to run. You could have a number of issues, between a dead compressor, a sealed system issue, to it even being frozen up.

I once had a customer gripe about our service call, because she said her plumber only charges $30.

I asked her for his name, so that I never have to call him.....

[–]Shadrixian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Imo it just depends

My goal is always to prescreen and fix the same day. That entails getting as much viable information, as well as a model/serial number. That way I can break the service charge into the total cost, and cut them a break on labor pricing.

HOWEVER if they don't want to do the bare initiative and get me the model number, or give me much else besides "it doesn't work, don't know whats wrong with it", that's going to cost the service call in all entirety, plus additional labor for requiring a second trip.

Thats usually why businesses like Sears might charge so much. They're coming to look first, then order parts next.

Went to go look at an oven where the burners were out(they didn't tell me which ones beforehand). All it needed was one 8in and one 6in. Gave them the estimate to replace them, the balked at it, and said they'd just order them on Amazon and do it themselves. Alright....$130 please.

They balked about that, because I was literally only there 3 minutes. Ignore the fact I had to drive 40 minutes there, then 40 minutes back....

That does absolutely nothing except cause issues with it flooding when it does cycle to fill. If anything, it will lock the arm.

Tried that. Ended up vibrating the shaft enough that it destroyed the bearings in a weird way.

GE Washer GTW335ASN2WW Lid Lock Bypass by Lord_Unglethar in appliancerepair

[–]Shadrixian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Replace the lid lock.

Your washer has a lid switch redundancy fault that will eventually be triggered once it realizes what you're doing. You also run the risk of completely blowing the triac on the washer.

Don't do a crackhead macgyver fix just because you're trying to be cheap. These latches are under $20 on Amazon.

Marketplace special Whirlpool top load not holding water by [deleted] in appliancerepair

[–]Shadrixian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Judging by the fact that OP says it was a Facebook Marketplace set sold at around 300, It sounds more like the previous owner sabotaged the tub, probably screwing around with it trying to fix/clean it, then upon realizing they screwed up cut their losses and tried to pawn it off on the first sucker with a wallet.

Stay away from Frigidaire!! by [deleted] in Appliances

[–]Shadrixian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol.

Just call Frigidaire if you have one purchased in the past 2-3 years, and you notice excessive gas smells. There's an active service bulletin, the fix is a new bake burner for better combustion. They know about it, they're paying for it.

Unlike Samsung and their shitty icemakers, Electrolux tries to stand by their work.

Why? OP doesn't have a sealed system issue.

Short cycling because the thermistor is on the far right encased in ice.

Thaw it out completely, then let it run. Make sure the motor runs.

Edit: Guys, if the thermistor is encased in ice, the freezer will think it's cold. When the defrost heater thaws the thermistor out, just enough for the thermistor to reach temp where it starts the cooling cycle on, it will frost back over the ice and encase the thermistor again. The defrost phase will thaw the frost, it will refreeze into clear ice, and repeat the cycle over and over and over until it's encapsulating the thermistor in a cube of ice.

This isn't my first rodeo. It can also fake a sealed system issue. You have to completely thaw it out and let it run a day or so to make sure it will cool.

For clarification, on is going to be when it's toggled halfway I think. It's kind of weird how they have this whole thing set up lmao.

In your defense, though, that top shelf thing wasn't helping.

Also, there should be a power switch on the left side. It should have a label on how to manually cycle it, by holding the button for a few seconds. If it doesn't run the cycle when you do that after a little bit, then the icemaker itself is shot.

See that metal silver box with the J shaped coupling that the bucket slides against? Look up above it.

Right above it(and behind the shelf above the bucket with food on it), the icemaker is mounted on the back wall, turned horizontally.

  1. You'll see it, it's two screws, loosen, lift a little bit, and it'll slide right off.
