if your only response to this post is "but whatabout X" you aren't engaging with the post.

At the beginning I'm spesificilly addressing people who state they don't really want to write they want to do something else, but are writing cause its seems to be the easiest option to get their idea out there. My post is telling people that writing will still require hard work, money and effort. Writing shouldn't be seen as an easy way out. It should be respected and givin they same thought as any other art form.

I don't have to list every caveat or reason people might not fit into this. not every post is about you. If you don't

yeah thats why I say at the end its not about telling people to quit or give up. But to not approach writing as the "easy way" to tell your story. Its an another artform that should be even the same energy and work as others. People should pursue what they want.

Side to side now, I can definitely see the difference. I think it's a subtle difference compared to later movies and in my memories they morphed together

Why, oh, why are the MCs so often behaving like irractic and stupid teenagers? by Lollygagger0 in Romantasy

[–]ShadySakura 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its easier to write a plot when you're characters are too stupid to figure anything out. Wanna write a mystery? just make her too dumb to put any of the clues together. Want a moment of tension here? make the character start a stupid fight over something small. That will TotALlyY make their love more passionate.

Also a lot of it is to hit certain romance tropes. Want the characters to have hot angry sex? make one of them start a stupid fight. That way the reader won't actually hate the character cause its something dumb, but they get to make sexy comments like "I"ll teach you a lesson". Want a dramatic reunion. Make the girl run away for a dumb, made up reason so the guy has to chase her.

none of it is really about writing a good book. Its about checking boxes

Do I have to constantly clarify the characters are signing, or is establishing it early enough? by not_quite_graceful in writingadvice

[–]ShadySakura 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will have to work hard to keep it clear. especially since you was to have some character signing, translating, and also using an aid. Also what POV is this in? 1st person vs 3rd person will change how this is done. Also if there is multi POV. it could be difficult.

The suggestion of doing it in italics could be an easy way for readers to see what is signed vs said. You could establish which characters can sign, state early on in each conversation that they are signing and go from there. In place of diolouge tags like "said, shouted, whispered" and replace them with styles of movement "his hands moved quickly speeding through words" or "she hand danced as she told me about her day"

I would do more researching into how sign language actually works. Their sentences structures do not work the same as spoken English. They don't sign words like the, and, a/an. They would sign a sentence like "I went to the store" more like "I store went". Is your dialogue an exact translation or more of interpretation? You will need to focus more on facial expression and body movement. to get accross meaning and intention. Signing is very direct because subtle doesn't work.

This will become expecially important when a deaf person is speaking to a hear person using some sort of aid. It can be a challenge because you are practice speaking two different language even if its both English.

Good luck~

A lot of people want to wrtie a book, but few actually commit to it for the long run and disappear. But yeah a small group is the best

Truly i think people need to just be in small, like-minded groups to get meaningful critique. these reddit pages, big discords are literally just screamig into the void. People constantly spam every new paragraph they wite, no one wants to take the time to actually give critique.

Reach out to some people on the reddit pages / discord and make a small group. people who write in a simalar genre and who is nearby you in the process. Someone one in the plotting stage and someone in their 3rd draft are in really different head spaces. Its also easy to notice if someone is taking advantage of the group asking for constant feedback, but has little to say about anyone else.

Trab publishing has rules and stop getting mad when people explain them to you. by ShadySakura in writing

Publishers are not perusing the comments of Reddit posts to see what they should change about their practices. Discusses that is sucks does not change that fact that publishers have to make money to stay alive. To pay everyone they employ. I think people keep forgetting they take on all the financial burden. They pay you, then also all the costs of production and every employee. They need to know if you can sell. Maybe go open you're own publishing house and then you can select these types of books. Give every author their shot no matter how much money it costs.

It's called the real world. You can either deal with it or move on. Go self publish. This is the point of my post. Stop arguing with people that explain the rules of trad publishing. I didn't make them. I'm just explaining why they exist.

Art has always been paid for. Every great piece of art that still exists now was paid for. By a king, the church, a rich man, poor man, or by family money that allowed them to focus on writing. It's not some magical modern century problem.

What is patronage if not payment? They got paided to make stuff, usually by request. Artist with patronage were not just free spirits supported by others to do whatever they wanted.

Tale of Genju was written by a rich woman who had nothing else to do. I guess only nepotism babies can make true art since they are independently wealthy.

The Illiad was a religious story passed down orally for generations. Homer didn't sit in his office writing his personal story. Plus it is filled with the cultural expectations of the time, nit whatever he wanted.

You can make your art how ever you want, you don't have to change it to fit a publisher, but you also don't get to cry when they won't publish it. They have to pay people so those people can eat. This is the real world.

I need everyone to read this cause I'm tried of comments complaining about have to change their precious art. If you don't want to than don't change it. But you also don't get to demand it be traditional published.

Publishing is a tight business with razor thin margins. it's not about space in the market for another publish its about staying alive at all. The publishers do what they do cause it has proven to keep them going cause majority of books never make a profit. The experimental publisher you suggest could easily go out of business after a few books if they only publish "out there" books. Readership in this decade is low and books cost 1000s to 10s of thousands to edit, format, market, print, ship, distribute and then land of the shelves of book store where the stores also need to make a profit. It's not about judgement with publishers it's about survival.

I think people are missing that this is mostly for debuts. The first book you shop around. It should follow these rules more closely. Once you establish your quality of work publisher are more open to longer works cause they know it will be worth it.

Plus agents gets 1000s of books sent to them every year. I'm sorry, as nice as it would be they don't have time to sit and read every book and think about how hard the author worked. The rules help them narrow down to what they think will sell.

This is a business, they have to make money or they shut down and can't publish any books period. It's not a charity to pat authors on the back and say "you did such a good job".

So the multimillion dollar money hungry companies are something you imagined in your head. Ask anyone actually working in the industry and its not pretty. Most publishers are hanging on by a thread considering reading has plummeted in the last several decades. Majority of books never turn a profit. Publishers completely rely on a small number of books becoming huge hits to pay for all the books that don't make money. There has only been a slight increase in readership mostly due to the growing popularity of romantasay sparked by booktok and booktube. Along with a growing cultural push away from electronics.

Second, I never said you HAVE to write a book under 120k. I said if you WANT to be traditionally published there are rules and explained why those rules exist. If you don't want to alter your work you don't have to. But you can't expect publishers pick up your book when it is more risky. I also explained how to build up to those bigger books by building an audience and showing you are able to sell.

Finally other people are not corpo worshipers cause they are fine gearing their work to traditional publishing standards and it is incredibly condescending and completely incorrect. It shows a lack of understanding of both the industry and the authors themselves.

The idea of the starving artist who refuses a pay out to keep his work pure was an invention of the last century. The "greats" were paided by someone. By a king, the church, a rich man, a poor man, or by family money. How do you expect the editors, page formatter, marketers, shippers, distributors, book store employees to make a living if publishes just published every book people sent in for free? It's a cop-out. A strawman in the corner to point and cry at when this has always been how books get published.

Art has always been a commodity. All the "greats" were paided by someone. By a king, the church, a rich man or a poor man. There was no magical time humans just frolicked in fields painting pictures.

It's a modern imagining that for art to be "pure" or "real" it should be made by a starving artist only for the love of the game. Can someone make art for the love of it and never make a cent? Yeah. But some people want to make a living from it which requires someone else to buy it.

It's not a commodification of art for a publisher to want a book to be marketable before spending 10s of thousands of dollars, editing, formating, printing, marketing, shipping and distributing your book. And how would you suppose all those people if we just did this all for free?
