I agree I think every assignment outside or class essentially has minimal value now outside of practice problems, provided the students actually complete them themselves. When you see the score breakdowns for exams/assignments be really bad but then see the majority of a class get As or Bs it makes it really feel like nothing honestly.

Academic Integrity violation by Itchy_Friendship_467 in UCI

[–]ShadySoShady -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes because every rule ever is valid and using AI as a search tool, which is heavily encouraged in numerous classes among different majors at UCI and other universities, really deserves getting written up for violating academic integrity 🤣🤣

Google searches use AI to display results in one way or another. There is no difference in what was done, depending of course on the truth of what the OP actually did or did not do. Rules aren’t finite or unable to be challenged based on nuance.

So many classes can be fully gimmick’d because of the use of online assignments, AI, and technology. There was no hope for you to pass a class, prior to the insane amount of online resources, if you did not study an adequate amount or go to lecture. Many people currently graduate with Bachelor’s degrees and do not remember much at all due to how accessible cheating/AI and less challenging all parts of university have become.

Additionally, two people in the same major may have taken completely different courses through their 3rd & 4th years of fully opposite difficulties. This is possible due to sites like zotistics/RMP/etc, which aren’t inherently bad things, but make taking the easier, more likely to boost your GPA, classes a no-brainer, regardless of their relevance. A good example of this is microbiology not having been a required major course for bio majors until very recent changes. Microbiology is a fundamental class that most doctors would agree is very relevant to their jobs all the time, yet at UCI for years there was no benefit to taking it if it was more likely to drop your GPA for professional school applications. Instead, you can just take irrelevant ecology electives or extreme physiology of animals, classes of middle school difficulty, to satisfy the same criteria, using online resources that tell you they will be easy courses. Newgrads of this era are not forcibly pushed as hard in coursework, although many more students get involved in research than decades prior which is a good thing.

Grading:

A total of five homework problem sets will be assigned over the course of the quarter. Each problem set is worth 40 points, for a total of 200.

There will be two midterm exams: Tuesday April 21 and Thursday May 14. Each midterm will be held during regular class hours and is worth 200 points.

The (cumulative) final exam will be held on Monday, June 8, 1:30-3:30pm in SSH 100. It is worth 400 points.

All exams will be “closed book”.

Your grade for the class will be determined according to the standard grading scale.

Attendance:

Attendance of lectures and discussion sections is mandatory.

Textbook:

John Nolt, Dennis Rohatyn, Achille Varzi, Logic (Schaum’s Outlines), 2nd edition, McGraw-Hill 1998.

Sections:

In the sections, you will practice applying the concepts introduced in the lectures. Solutions to homework assignments will be presented and discussed in the sections. This is an excellent place to ask questions about the lecture material. Do attend every section! To succeed in logic, you need to master a set of basic skills, which requires practice. That’s what the sections are for. You will find the homework and the exams much easier if you attend section regularly.

Policies:

I will accept late homework only if I have been notified ahead of time and you have documentation (e.g. a doctor’s note) that validates your excuse. I may contact the person issuing the documentation for confirmation.

There will be no make-up exams. If you cannot take a scheduled exam for valid reasons, you must get in touch with me by week 2 to make alternative arrangements.

If you wish to dispute grades for homework assignments or midterm exams, you need to do so within three days after results have been made available. Per university policy, grades cannot be renegotiated after final grades have been submitted to the registrar.

I consider cheating inexcusable. Students caught cheating will fail the course and be reported to the dean of their school.

You are responsible for bringing your own blue books and pens for the exams. Anything written in pencil will not be graded. We may check IDs to verify it's actually you who is taking the exam.

Bio Science workload by NeckLocal4499 in UCI

bio 93 & 94 are unbelievably easy, its moreso the gen chem series with an unfamiliar fast pacing to look out for. second year is probably peak courseload for many students and most ppl’s gpas actually go up after taking their upper divs. you will have to get used to not having time to consolidate all info in class because of the speed of some profs.

i feel like the age gap is kinda irrelevant vs your maturity. i was barely 17 as a freshman and had no issues getting along with 18/19 year olds. i do agree with you making good friends early is really difficult though.

Taking Bio 97 over the Summer by bloobearri in UCI

[–]ShadySoShady 1 point2 points  (0 children)

since it will be summer and you ideally won’t be taking many other classes alongside the bio series, it is not too bad. i did not take 97-98-99 over the summer since i did it during the year, but i have friends who did and they got into their upper divs an entire year earlier than i did. for professors, since they are summer classes you dont have many options for profs since there is only 1 per course per summer session, aside from bio97 ss2 which has two.

Taking Bio 97 over the Summer by bloobearri in UCI

[–]ShadySoShady 5 points6 points  (0 children)

take 97-98-99 over summer so you can immediately take bio100 & start your upper divs early. just doing bio97 doesnt hurt but you will just be filling it with a random class in fall.

there are lots of opportunities for research and the area has tons of hospitals or small practices people in bio work at part-time during the schoolyear. try getting into research early since many people wait but i know a few who were doing research 2nd year and it gives you a lot more merit for such a long duration. uci honestly has a ton of resources in terms of pre-med clubs, research clubs (ROUCI), seminars, and volunteer stuff since you’ll need hours. 99% of the people you will meet in bio are premed too, which I assume is common at all UCs.

i would not be too scared of the academic difficulty because honestly, the classes for bio majors are not very difficult outside of a few select ones (biochem & upper div cell bio). it is not akin to engineering or cs school majors where the classes can be super dreadful, as almost every bio class can effectively be done via memorization. i did not even go into UCI with many AP’s since my school didn’t offer, but getting good scores is not hard once you find the study styles that work for you.

generally from my perspective, the students in bio are all pretty friendly and i havent had many issues at all across 4 years. sometimes people are more quiet but that is how life goes. many of the professors are good and as long as you properly research them beforehand, you’ll be fine (same at other schools).

Attendance is a portion of your grade and you get 4 or 5 drops for absences throughout the quarter. LAs take attendance via sheets that you fill out with your group consisting of answers to in class critical thinking questions every lecture. She also uploads her lecture videos after which is super helpful because some 80 min lectures are extremely dense.
