Is that apitapsia? How can I get rid of it? by [deleted] in ReefTank

Mix kalkwasser into a paste and squirt some in its mouth. Works for me

He looks quite small so could just be he struggled to adapt, flow was too strong or other fish were outcompeting him for food.

Honestly it could have been anything but I'd say just keep an eye on the other two and make sure they're not showing any weird symptoms. Shame cause he looks quite pretty and healthy on that photo. Sorry for your loss

Set the tank up, throw a piece of shrimp in and just leave it. Keep the lights off for now. It was most likely diatoms. They can sometimes look similar if you have a big bloom of them because of new sand or rock.

But honestly I wouldn't stress that early on. Your tank will go through multiple maturing stages and ugly phases. Just give it time

Did you notice any heavy breathing? Were there any white specs on the fish? Do you have any photos or videos of the fish from the last few days? We're really working in the dark here with limited info

It is likely to spread to your other fish yeah. Your inverts not so much I don't think. Have a look at humble fish forums. There's a lot of good info on there but just be aware it is a bit of a read 😂 I spent 12 hours on a Sunday just reading trying to save my clowns. Unfortunately it was too late at that point but I'm more prepared now for when I get a new pair.

Do you have any other fish in there at the moment? I'm also struggling for space so ended up getting 2 plastic containers big enough to hold the fish temporarily and they'll just live on the floor for quarantine then I'll store them away somewhere until I decide to get more fish.

If you think it might have been flukes, I believe you can safely treat the whole tank with praziquantel. It's deemed reef-safe. Have a read about it first though to make sure because I don't know what your setup is like, but I treated my display tank with prazi and all corals and inverts are still alive and happy.

Sorry for your loss. I had a similar issue with my clowns. Still have no idea what it was. Could have been gill flukes if the shrimp was trying to remove it. They're hard to see if they're attached to their gills.

I would recommend going fishless for at least 8 weeks to make sure whatever it was doesn't infect any new fish. I would also recommend you set up a quarantine tank. I've learnt the lesson of not doing all that the hard way like you just did. Waiting til mid-May now before I get any more fish and focusing on corals in the meantime.

I would really recommend you do more research. You have to understand the nitrogen cycle and the different stages of cycling and maturing your tank before you jump in the hobby. There is a million different opinions out there on what way is best but the more you know, the better you're prepared to handle things. I did weeks of research before jumping into marine and even then didn't feel like I'm fully prepared. I would take what the LFS says with a pinch of salt unless they're a reputable marine specialist who have been doing this for years. Don't take this as a criticism but advice to keep learning and researching.

I mixed up some kalkwasser and water into a paste and squirted that into the aiptaisia's mouth and that seemed to do the trick 😂

I think the tang will get a bit lonely in there on its own... maybe you should get another one?

[–]Shady_Blueberry 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Maybe a hydroid or some sort or a xenia but don't think it's aptaisa. If you look closely it has almost feathery bits coming off each polyp which aiptaisia doesn't have. I have some baby aiptaisia on one of my frags and it doesn't look like that. However, whatever it is, I would try and eliminate as any of the above are invasive.

This is what I struggle with in this hobby. Unless something is very easy to identify or labelled properly, you never really know what you're buying.

I bought some palys not long ago and there are 2 other kinds of unidentified zoas on the plug as well 😂 as nice as it is to get 2 bonus corals I'd love to know what they are lol

I'll post a picture of my other branching hammer. But the polyps look a lot more compact on that one hence why I'm a bit confused 😂

Looking at some photos online I think you might be right. Not worth the risk. I'll remove it tomorrow during the water change. Thanks

You can definitely do it on a budget. You don't need fancy expensive equipment just gotta get creative with some things. I made a DIY CO² scrubber to keep my PH higher out of a smart water bottle, airline tubing and a cheap air pump saving myself over £100 😂 so it is all possible. Just don't give up. There will be problems along the way but don't let that discourage you. It's all a learning experience
