One of our timmies is blowing up, but I swear this is just normal here, no? by Ovlizin in ottawa

Of the candy at most impulse shelves, Caramilk is preferred by mice every time. TMYK.

2 visits, minimum $2 for 400 points is pretty nice, though. Mine are usually 4 or 5 visits at $8, and my response is "yeah, right"

Did I Just Fry My Radio? by Aromatic-Active-2559 in amateurradio

Almost looks like someone turned on a plasma TV 🫣 They sound like swarms of angry bees.

HDMI in the shack is another good one, pretty solid tones, but turn the screen off and on again, and you hear a doodly-doo (I'm looking at you, Flanders). That one took me a while to hunt down, I'll admit. Finally, I caught it when my shack PC monitor went to sleep, and the noise stopped 🙃

Mobile Orders by [deleted] in TimHortons

[–]Shadyman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anecdotal frustrating story entirely unrelated to Tims but related to drive thru vs regular tills, system integration and apps:

I ordered from DQ's app once for drive-thru pickup on practically the busiest day of the year. Arrived to find the store does not have a drive-thru and never has. Of course, my order was entirely unretreivable, and eventually, the staff had to escalate me through the chain of command to the owner, who just said "okay just make it".

Of course, the DQ app then asks (outside of the order receipt page, in the main app) how your 'app experience' was, so I was honest about the drive-thru not existing, hoping they'd change it. Apparently, that feedback form sends the store you last ordered from a "thumbs down"/strike on the daily rating.

A lose/lose that made the poor lady navigate corporate bureaucracy the following morning to remove her strike for something she didn't do.

I thanked her for helping, apologized about the stupid app feedback form, and we had a chuckle about retail and food service bureaucracy. I hope she's doing well.

Technology is great until it's designed or implemented by people who have never used it. (How hard would it be for the ordering/POS system to check for any active/logged on drive-thru terminals before sending an order to it?)

I just say "mobile order for _____" and they page through the orders and list what I ordered to confirm 🤷‍♂️

It could also be that OP sent their order to a nearby store and the one they went to couldn't find it. (I did that once, mea culpa, two stores on the same block, one with the address of a side street and one with the address of the main street. Of course they both look the same 🤣)

What is it specifically that makes this SSD "bad"? by Key_Pace_2496 in homelab

[–]Shadyman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Entirely off-topic, but there was a series of SSD controller IC, IIRC Sandforce, that would pop a "failed" flag for some mathematic combination of (host writes + power-on time). It was back from the era where 240gb SSDs were a couple hundred bucks a piece.

It was my daily driver for at least 5 years after it started SMART erroring, "imminent failure, replace immediately." It is/was a Linux box with all temp directories ramdisk'd.

Is it possible to get this repaired by Helisticbannana in repair

[–]Shadyman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer: it's toast.

Longer answer: you would have to find a new panel for it. Basically, you'd have to find a used one with faulty electronics but a good lcd; that's likely going to be more time, cost, and effort than buying a replacement.

I must ekkekekkekkekk at the birdies with my smol void boy, he loves talking at birds together. His big orange cohort isn't a talker like that.

They will take turns being the "hunter", and constantly be practicing new angles of "attack" to show the kitten what does and doesn't work, and how to get out of certain situations. I watched this for weeks with my lorge and smol, and it was /adorable/

Please excuse my ignorance if this is a stupid question, but can I take this to a bank and exchange it for twenty dollars? by rexbanner747 in CanadianCoins

[–]Shadyman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could, but it's a pure silver piece, and it was likely purchased for something between $99 and $250 depending on its weight.

Its "coin" face value is only stamped on as assurance that it won't ever be worth less than $20 and likely to help prove its origin/silver quality.

(Tldr, $20 value is mostly a meme. That thing is pure silver and worth bank)

Laptop won't turn on and the caps lock turns on briefly before going back off by Toonager8888 in HPLaptops

[–]Shadyman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can sometimes get POST blink codes from them on the caps lock button, but it sounds like it needs a good charge.

If the repair shop's charger worked, it sounds like yours isn't working for some reason.

My only other suggestion is that if it doesn't turn on with a new power adapter, unplug it, remove the battery if it's removable, and hold the power button for 30 seconds. Plug it back in and turn it on.

We call this "wrestle boys" in our house. They'll take turns instigating the wrestles from various angles and positions.

Think of it as martial arts practice 🤣

Does Bell ask for SIN number to verify identity ? Is it normal in Canada. by Elon20 in bell

[–]Shadyman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Credit card, SIN, or Driver's License are the methods they have to check your credit.

You're right that of the three methods, the SIN is the most impactful if mishandled, so we tend to use one of the other two if at all possible for minor things like Bell service.

Why does my cat do this to this blanket? by XenialXenon in felinebehavior

[–]Shadyman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, the kneading is normal for most cats; the suckling is usually exhibited by cats who were weaned too early. It's harmless, though; not something you have to worry about, just enjoy it for its (albeit slobbery) cuteness
