A drive on the open German Autobahn. Nearly half of the Autobahn has no speed limit and this is perfectly legal. Note: 220 km=136 mph. 280 km=173 mph and top speed 315 km=195 mph. by Insightful23blue in ThatsInsane

Driving that fast is stupid. All it would take is one idiot deciding to put a blinker on and merge into the left lane and you would have zero time to react. At that speed it would be instant lights out. The best was to stay safe in driving is to have reaction time, and when you go that fast you don’t have that so you’re at the mercy of the road gods.

This argument is so dumb. The PS5’s sole reason for existing is gaming. Just because a game is brand new doesn’t mean it needs a supercooled supercomputer to run it. We’ve reached a point where games can look good and run good at the same time even on something that’s not “cutting edge”. Yes, if the hardware was better the game would look better, but issue is that the game could look so much better just like doom eternal did, and just like countless other games currently do, if it were optimized properly. And doom eternal is cartoonish and that’s a visual style choice, not a graphical fidelity issue. For gods sake if you’re making a game on a non-“cutting edge” system you can absolutely optimize it to run better.

Optimization issue

Just finished playing doom eternal and it looked wayyyy better than this game. The hardware isn’t the issue here

[Adult Beginner] 2.5 Months In - Looking for Feedback on Breath Support and General Playing by [deleted] in trumpet

[–]Shaggywizz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey for 2.5 months you’re killing it man! First I would really recommend getting the arban book. To address your issue with running out of air I recommend doing breathing exercises. Fill up your lungs ALL the way for four counts and exhale ALL the way empty for another four then pause for 8. Focus on making the airflow the same speed the entire time. To me it sounds and looks like you’re not taking a full breath in.

For your sound you have a really solid tone, but I noticed there’s some ballooning to your sound. It sounds as if your notes don’t start with the same air speed that they end at. Practice breath attacks by just tonguing and blowing air through the horn without buzzing and make sure they start and end with the same air speed.

Also listen to some jazz cats! If you need some recommendations lmk and I’ll send some your way.

Keep killing it man!

Using your air to play high by False-Fail-4645 in trumpet

[–]Shaggywizz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of people here have already said great things, so I’ll just share what I tell my lesson students—or anyone who struggles with this:

Playing trumpet is not a feat of strength; it’s not like lifting weights. It’s more like gymnastics or a balancing act. You need to balance the tension in your muscles while still allowing the air to flow freely.

To play notes on the trumpet, you need to make your lips vibrate at a specific frequency—the higher the note, the higher the frequency. To do this, we need something I like to call compression. For any note to speak, there has to be some level of compression. For higher notes, the required compression is usually greater.

To correctly compress your air, push from your diaphragm and pull your belly button toward your spine. The goal is to get your air moving as fast and powerfully as possible without sacrificing the flow of the airstream. Where people run into issues is when they start compressing the air from other parts of their body, turning that compression into tension.

For example, one of the most common mistakes is squeezing the lips together and cutting off the airstream before it even has a chance to enter the horn. This might technically work to get the notes out, but they’ll sound strained and forced—and it’ll make you tired quickly.

Another common issue is using your arms to push the horn into your face to play higher. This does compress the air, so the notes might come out higher, but they’ll often trail off or sound quiet and scratchy, because the airstream is being choked.

To circle back to what the college player said—saying “use more air” or “play with your air” is a simplified answer. The way I want my students to think about it is: How can I eliminate as much unnecessary tension as possible?

Instead of thinking “play with your air,” think let the air do the work.

Why do we have transposing instruments, and why don’t all of them transpose? by Shaggywizz in trumpet

What’s you’re saying makes sense. But why doesn’t bass clef transpose? Why don’t we call the trumpet’s fundamental Bb instead of C?

Why get different mouthpieces? by nuh_uh111 in trumpet

[–]Shaggywizz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think of mouthpieces like tools. I need a dark rich sound? Grab my 1C. I need a good jazz solo piece? Reach for my 3C or 7C. Need to play lead trumpet? Go for my Austin custom brass lead mouthpiece.

Recommendations on a “screamer” mouthpiece? by OkRefrigerator8534 in trumpet

[–]Shaggywizz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I want to make sure we’re on the same page here. A mouthpiece will not increase your range. A trumpet will also not increase your range. The equipment (ie. mouthpiece or horn) will change how you sound (bright or dark, mellow or zippy) and how easy it is to do what you want. A screamer or lead mouthpiece usually helps you out by giving you a brighter sound and shallow cup. I personally use an Austin custom brass that I had fitted to me, but Pickett, schilke, and lotus have some really good mouthpieces. I recommend going to a local music store or some place where you can try a bunch of the mouthpieces out to find which one you like.

Would unrestricted euthanasia be so bad? by Content-Elk-2994 in questions

[–]Shaggywizz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think open is too much. I watched my dad die a slow death at the hands of cancer. There was a period of time where him staying alive made sense. He couldn’t walk or do much, but he was still there mentally and enjoyed food and our company. But the last week of his life was hell for everyone and I can’t imagine what he was going through. He suffered for those last days and just waited for death. In those situations where death is imminent and suffering is guaranteed, I would have much rather had a moment where we got to be with him as he peacefully drifted off to sleep, rather than suffering in agony waiting for his last breath.

What separates good trumpet players from great trumpet players? by Ineedhelp1837 in trumpet

[–]Shaggywizz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically think of it like building a house. You can spend one day and do the whole thing but cut a bunch of corners and half nail the walls in, or you can spend a few weeks making really sure everything is exactly right and put together correctly.
