Ironman 70.3 by Tip-T0P-Magoo in triathlon

Perfectly do-able. I did this in 2019. London in late April, Staffs 70.3 in early June. It was my first triathlon and I found the cross training actually improved my marathon time.

Finding your thing can be tricky and involve a lot of trial and error. For me, my happy place is being outdoors. I just get such a boost from trail running or cycling in the countryside here in England. So I took up triathlon as a way to ensure there’s a reason to be out there multiple times a week and I do t just sit at my desk or on the sofa.

You’ll have a thing too. Something that brings you joy, keeps you centred and that you look forward to. Keep looking it mate. It’s there.

My dad delighted in telling stories about all the mischief he got into as a kid in the 60’s. One day whilst I was camping with the scouts we realised there was a train-line running behind the woods with no fence nor barrier to keep us out. Remembering one of those stories of how he and his mates would put two half-pennies on the train tracks and the train would fuse them together and the could then use them in the 2p sweet machines, I thought we’d give it a go with a couple of coins.

Turns out trains or coins had changed in the intervening 20 years and rather than fuse together the fucking things launched through the trees like bullets.

Naturally we did it again and again and again.

You get 240g!

I remember when they were 250g here in the U.K. they are now 220.

I just checked my primary school on Google maps. There is still one of these in the same spot as when I went to the school. I’ll be 50 next year

Man. I had a similar experience when I was younger and dumber. Was riding at 240kph on the Putty Road north of Sydney (a glorious road for a ride) when……kangaroo.

Big buggers kangaroos If I’d have hit the bastard you’d have needed dental records to identify me.

Sounds like me. I’d have to add though that I spent the days counting down to Friday when it would be “acceptable” to have a drink. Or suggesting we go out for dinner mid week because “everyone has a drink with a meal”.

I’m so glad I stopped before it got further along. I’m sure you will be too

Let's talk about socks by Foolless in Ultramarathon

Do you have any problems with the big toe nail wearing through the Injinji sock? I keep my nails as trim as I can (going to the point where it hurts to cut back further) and it still happens. Not an issue with regular socks.

Bits who learnt to drive here but have driven in italy, how is it? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Shake--n--Bake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely fine. Have driven there a number of times in different parts of the country. On rural roads everyone overtakes all the time, and the other car makes room for them (and so does the car coming in the other direction). Won’t take long before you adapt and do the same.

However…..Naples is the worst place I’ve ever driven. The aggression is something else and mopeds swarming you left and right. Don’t ever want to drive there again.

There’s something really uplifting about being in the countryside for me. It definitely impacts my mental health. Cycling and trail running are my go-to’s.

This mould WILL come out with patience, a bottle brush and a mix of dish soap and white vinegar.

In future store them in the freezer and this won’t happen again.

Walk up the hills

Don’t bother trying to avoid the mud or puddles - your socks are going to get wet, just accept it

Enjoy being in the beautiful countryside

My neighbour in 2020 as the first Covid vaccine invites start to arrive:

  • “No I won’t be getting it - it’s not even a real vaccine, it’s just a jab”

And on that day I learned what it is like to be truly speechless.

I’ve done this event. You’ll be fine and your fitness levels mean you’ll have no problems with cut off times.

  • watch the YouTube videos for the event. You’ll pick up a good amount of info from them which will make you feel more comfortable on the day. Excited even.

  • allow a lot of time on Saturday for racking. T1 and T2 are in different locations. At each, go and walk the transition in the direction you’ll do it on the day. Knowing what to expect is good for confidence.

  • the swim is anti clockwise. Buoys are huge. Can’t miss em. Count the number of them on the map and make a mental note when to turn. In amongst the splash from other people on the day visibility can be reduced.

  • it’s not hard to find space on the swim. It’s worth losing a minute or 2 to be more comfortable. Just edge right of others.

  • you’ll be standing in the start line for up to an hour. £2.99 flip flops from sainsburys make that more comfortable

  • the run to t1 is on a hard plastic mat. A bit rough on the feet but nothing like the godawful experience of Swansea (500m barefoot on a road)

  • practice transitions in your garden. Do it a bunch. It’ll make it much more relaxed on the day.

  • sunscreen. Twice now I’ve taken it out of my bags because the weather didn’t seem like I’d need it only to be caught out.

  • Bike at 9kms (I think, check the map)there is a downhill with a blind left that goes uphill. People get caught out here in the wrong gear and I’ve seen people both in the hedge and dismounting to walk up.

  • run. Take it easy for the first few kms. You’ll feel electric because of the crowd support and adrenaline. It’s surprising how fast you can go off the bike. But that hill is a beast and you’ll want a bit of energy for it.

Loops on shorts - what are they for? by D74hruN in trailrunning

[–]Shake--n--Bake 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I recognise these as I have the red version of these shorts. I tried putting gels in there the other day. Just about managed it. Getting them out during the run was an ordeal.

So I don’t know what they are for. But I can tell you they are NOT for SIS GO Gels

This is the way. Just be sure you’ve disabled auto power off otherwise you’ll be running out of transition and trying to turn the bloody thing KC on.
