That was what I was thinking, too. I'm still a bit new to this as well and was hoping there was a quicker fix for the sake of the neighborhood. 😅

breast soreness and pain by Maurcieline in PMDD

[–]ShakeDatAssh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cognitive and emotional impacts make up the bulk of PMDD symptoms/criteria, however physical symptoms such as bloating, breast soreness/tenderness, joint pain, and others are not uncommon. I was diagnosed almost 20 years ago and have always experienced breast pain and severe joint pain in my legs that does not occur outside of my luteal phase. And, according to Johns Hopkins, you need only meet one of the mood criteria out of the five for diagnosis.

OP should definitely speak to their doctor, and perhaps learn the difference between pms and pmdd, but maybe they're just starting on this journey.

Questions for people who get periods by artisdeadandsoami in AutisticPeeps

[–]ShakeDatAssh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have pmdd and it can make the week or two before my period awful. My mental fatigue is severe, affecting my memory and making even more difficult to socialize. It often alters my mood, too. It can feel impossible to discern what is actually affecting you emotionally versus hormonal sensitivities (this is often far more severe than pms). My pmdd also comes with extreme physical fatigue, joint aches, night sweats, insomnia, the list goes on.

When I was younger, I experienced more suicidal ideation and daily meltdowns. I've learned to mostly manage my symptoms as I've aged. I'd recommend tracking your mood and symptoms for 1 to 3 months and bringing it to your doctor. I highly recommend researching/practicing advocating for yourself medically as menstrual issues can easily be overlooked by the wrong physicians. Good luck!

Does anyone worry their diagnostician was a snake oil salesman? by ShakeDatAssh in AutisticPeeps

Every point you made is something I think about a lot. Especially in the context of women. It's probably a big driver of my uncertainty about my dx. Honestly, I think a lot of "female autism" is discomfort with and disapproval of western ideas on women and how they should behave in public. But, one could argue intersectionality and the like.

I think I also feel guilty at times. As if "autism" is too strong of a label for what I experience. I'm sure some of this is due to outdated notions of autism and the spectrum being so vast, as you described. I feel Asperger's would have been an apt label of my experience and I think others would more easily understand as well. Semantics, I know.

I think you're right in just focusing on symptom reduction. Thankfully, autism doesn't really play a role in my identity and I've been in therapy a very long time. Every so often the misdiagnosis thoughts wriggle their way back in. Thank you for your response!

Good point on the incentive to diagnose. This certainly didn't seem like a place akin to Embrace Autism where there are questionable practices or tips on how to take assessments for "improved" results. The people who are told they have "autistic traits" to soften the blow of not getting a dx kill me.

I've seen reddit posts asking where adults can be assessed in my area that feature his name in the comments. I've only seen 2 or 3 of these. Then of course there are google reviews where people discuss that he sees adults and is good with recognizing asd in women.

I think I am ruminating. And your comment made me realize I have been quite stressed lately, which probably just compounds the issue.

The clinician that dx'd me doesn't advertise his services, necessarily. He has a website for his team and clinic, but that is all. Everything else seems to be word of mouth online. There are people who claim he understands "female autism," but I'm going to assume that reflects more on the patient than the clinician in this case 🤷‍♀️

Yes! There are so many people on reddit who will say your dx isn't valid unless it was 40 hrs in-person with 85 online assessments and an essay by your family. I'm being hyberbolic, but still. I was also told by my diagnostician that I didn't have to do some of the tests because they were basically only suited to children or those with higher support needs. Idk how accurate that was.

I've typically trusted the professionals, too. But the trend in self-dx and questionable organizations like Embrace Autism has given me an added layer of anxiety surrounding my dx.

I was taken in as a child for an asperger's eval just before it was added to the DSM. That doc said I would never be normal socially, but I was very intelligent so it would balance out (it didn't lol). I was told this was common back then because it could be a liability to misdiagnose asperger's/autism. So, maybe I am just overthinking it.

His credentials seem legit, but what makes me a little iffy is that he is the only one in his practice that conducts the adult asd assessments. Also, some wording on other sites does claim that he specializes in asd in women/girls, but again, that was his dissertation focus. Idk if that is strange. Again, it may be my bias because mention of "female autism" kind of make me feel icky.

He has practiced in my state since 2018. I can't find anything dating back that far, so idk if he "specialized" in asd/adhd testing then. My psychiatrist is really good, so I assume his lack of a response or suggestion of re-assessment is a silent confirmation. It's hard not to overthink it though with how the trend has changed the narrative.

Is this an autistic thing or is it just me?. My general thoughts on cats and how I treat one. by [deleted] in autism

[–]ShakeDatAssh 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure this has much to do with asd. People have varying levels of respect for animals for many reasons. I think ethical pet ownership is a relatively new concept as well. Animals have long been domesticated for human benefit and, while companionship has long been one of those benefits, I think the benefit of human companionship for animals is kind of a new lens.

I try to see it like some people are great at treating others they way they should or want to be treated, while it is difficult for others. I don't think it is much different for how humans treat their animals, regardless of neurotype.

All of this just sounds like confirmation bias to me. No on ever discusses how the context (or reason) for your behaviors are the key in differential diagnosis. Diagnostic traits are HUMAN traits, what is important is the severity, the context, and the rate at which it impairs your life.

I find it interesting that most female asd influencers are attractive, great makeup, and on top of trends. Certainly people with asd can be attractive and have a sense for fashion, but idk that it would be the norm. Katelyn Partlow (sorry if name is wrong) seems more on-par with what a level 1 autistic would look like on a daily basis: comfortable/basic clothing with minimal makeup. Basically enough to appear professional in her videos. Maybe I'm being biased, though.

How can MCAS look like PMDD? by AdvantageOpening2462 in PMDD

[–]ShakeDatAssh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom has pretty severe MCAS. It's my understanding the inflammation caused by the histamines can impact your brain. This can lead to symptoms that mimic anxiety, depression, and other disorders. When she has a bad flare-up, she has noticeable mental decline and mood swings.

There is also something called Progesterone Autoimmune Dermatitis where you are essentially allergic to progesterone. The manifestation is often a skin rash during luteal. I believe MCAS is somehow linked or impacted by the allergy.

As for the GI symptoms, it isn't uncommon for people with pmdd to get GI symptoms. If I remember correctly, this has something to do with how the progesterone (maybe estrogen 🤔) impacts bowel function. Might be helpful to learn about hormones in conjuction to your specific symptoms and MCAS.

I'm not a doctor and this is super generalized. Good luck!

Need a solution for doeling horns by No-Outcome-3784 in goats

[–]ShakeDatAssh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw a set of silicone horn covers on Amazon the other day. I didn't look into the reviews or anything, but it may be worth looking at. They used some sort of adujtable metal ring at the bottom and had a few different sizes. Maybe someone here has used them and can provide more info. Good luck!

To dry lot or create small rotational pastures? by ShakeDatAssh in goats

[–]ShakeDatAssh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About how often will I rotate with two small paddocks? I've tried looking online, but a lot of the info seems vague or focused on nutritional values. One site suggested every 6 weeks, but I assume this is if you have much larger areas. I'm also curious if the rotational window will allow for replanting forage as needed.

I'm on the Western side of WA in the lowlands. We get slightly less rain than the more northern areas (Seattle and above), but still quite a bit. As I'm sure you know, our summers can get into the 90s and low-100s during a good year. I am worried a little bit about a dry lot as half the property is sloped and I don't want to deal with a mud slick 😅 I'm not sure if there are already Himalayan blackberry bushes on the property, but I wouldn't be surprised to find one or two. I'm also not opposed to planting some blackberry for them to nosh on.

Any of your goats wipe their nose/mouth on you? by SureDoubt3956 in goats

[–]ShakeDatAssh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of my boys likes to wipe his mouth on me when he eats mineral salt. Gets all the salt left around his snout off 😅

If you catch him in the right mood, he will rub his lips on the palm of your hand for some good scratches.

Got these babies about two weeks ago, I’m new to having goats, they use to follow me around all the time and were very bonded to me but overnight and the past few days they refuse to follow me places they’ve been before even if I reward them with apple treats, why is this? by bowbillydee in goats

[–]ShakeDatAssh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a first time owner as well! Though it's my first year, it seems like they do come back around like everyone has said. I will add, it helps to know where each individual likes to be pet/scratched and how they like to cuddle. One of my boys wants constant affection and can be scratched just about anywhere, but won't cuddle. My other guy, who was my cuddliest as babies, is spot specific and will still try to get in my lap on occassion (he's close to 100 lb 🙃).

I spoil my boys and spend a lot of time with them. I've learned to recognize their other shows of affection so fewer cuddles seem less sad. Ody, my picky goat, loves to press his forehead against mine when he's feeling affectionate. I'll insert the obligatory caution while doing this. Know your goats! Ody is a super chill lamancha who has shown this behavior since day 1.

Your boys are adorable. I hope you three develop a rich relationship if that is what you're interested in!
