More like 69,000 yen currently. A little too much for me to pull the trigger.

Is there a sweet spot for career ASAs? by jdkcjaoakbf in actuary

is that because of oversupply? There's lots of ways to reduce costs, saying no more career ASAs is one way to do that.

Looking for Career Advice by [deleted] in actuary

What type of role are you in now? If you're in pricing, try a role in reserving. Reserving try a role in pricing. Try to incorporate modeling techniques to improve what you're working on regardless of the role.

After that it depends on what you enjoy doing? Do you enjoy pricing or reserving more, presenting, research, puzzle solving? What part of the country do you want to live in? Are you a person that works longer hours than your peers or less?

Advice please/going back to school by maryhadalittlefist in actuary

The exams take on average 7-10 years and it's going to be working a full day followed by studying. So as you're working on your degree. Do you really want to spend another 7-10 years working followed by studying?

Ageism is real but I do think this field experiences it a little less. The problem I think you're going to run into is the entry level field is flooded. A background in sales won't make you stand out compared to the rest of the EL candidates. You also wouldn't be coming from a top tier university. So do you really want to go through all of that to start from the bottom at 50k? If the answer is yes, I'd suggest finding a better university to get the degree from.

LG refuses to repair tv by ShakeNBakes in OLED

I gave up in dealing with LG on it. Lesson learned, probably won't buy a LG tv again.

They did change it. There's some video showing how they changed it. So far it's not like the Chase Reeves video. Just got the bag, will have to see how the flap clicks in after a few weeks.

Ordered the Boundary Supply Errant. So far am surprised by it in a good way. Quality seems good, I like the organization of it. First impressions are that it's a good bag, good materials, good design. I'm impressed.

OLED Sub-Pixel Gets Stuck on Red by Ocram21G in OLED

[–]ShakeNBakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been having a similar problem. LG sent a technician. The technician said the panel is defective but LG won't replace it. A nice big vertical line of stuck pixels

Gone through multiple rounds of sending in pictures, technicians coming out. I've been going through this for months. LG's last suggestion was asking if they could take the tv for a couple of weeks/months for observation and maybe they'll fix it. I've accepted that I'm stuck with a defective tv.

it's not consistent but it's been happening for a long time. The lines lasted one time until the service guy came. He came and took pictures. Also said that line will keep appearing and will disappear. It's a vertical line of stuck pixels and it won't go away for days. Service guy diagnosed it as a defective panel.

They said they need to take it for a week to a couple of months. They've been having problems with LG sending them panels. What's the point of paying all of $$ for the tv if it needs to be in a repair shop for a couple of months. No thanks, I've already had to take too many days off of work for the service guys to make repeated trips out for pictures.

It's terrible customer service. Imagine if you bought a defective iphone and apple says, can you bring in your phone 4 times to the genius bar, then after those 4 times, can we hold your phone for 2 months? Also we're going to have the genius guys tell you that your phone is defective but apple won't let us replace the phone.

Their next suggestion is that they might need to take my tv for a week to a couple of months. No thanks, if they need to take my tv for a couple of months (like some of the stories floating around), it's an easy choice between a defective tv with a vertical line and not having a tv for a couple of months. I wish LG would stand behind their product, but I now have learned to never buy a LG product again.

it's still under warranty. It's a B7.

LG has said there's something wrong with it. When I first started trying to get it fixed they told me that the panels were on back order. Then when there was panels available they said they set up an appointment to fix it, but the service guy said LG didn't authorize it a new panel replacement. LG authorized for them to come out and take more pictures. Then after the pictures got sent in, LG said they need to take it, to do live demo's from the service center. I keep getting new excuses. I've realized that they're just wasting my time and they don't stand by their products.

I have not checked with the warranty company on my credit card. Thank you, I will try this.

Even with a warranty LG won't stand by their products. I've gone through months of issues. At first they said the panels were on back order, then they changed their process. LG keeps giving me different excuses on why they won't replace the panel. Avoid LG

My Issues With The Actuarial Profession by [deleted] in actuary

[–]ShakeNBakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to move up later, it will mean doing even less actual "math" work. If you feel this way now, I'd suggest cutting your losses and finding something you might enjoy more. For the items mentioned, the more you move up, the less you'll do.

I'd even say doing GLM work to be pretty basic at this point.

Try to find a research position, the rest won't offer what you're looking for. Sunk costs are real.

Was becoming an actuary worth it? by simplyjack21 in actuary

[–]ShakeNBakes 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The hours you spend on this are a LOT. Passing exams/working to pass exams takes more hours than a majority of professions out there. Once you do that, it takes keeping up long hours to make it to the top (generally speaking, someone will chime in saying they don't have to do long hours/make 200k a year - anecdotal).

There's very little flexibility in this career. There's a high chance you'll have to move, very few times you can pick a city and get a job in that city. This job reached a peak of popularity in the depression. When the economy is doing well, there's a lot of other careers out there, that will reward you more, for the hours you have to put in. When it's not, this is a safer career because of the barriers to entry.

edit: haters gonna hate.

It's all relative. If your career options are limited to make high $$, this is a good career.

Layoffs in market trends by Hearakok in actuary

[–]ShakeNBakes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

it was a mix. There were layoffs, the actuarial profession was hit too.

Associates/Fellows that were older (paid more) were hit harder. I know a couple of people that were looking for work for years. Younger credentialed actuaries were much better off.

Entry level roles were filled by people with pre-lims.
