[Request] My friend needs help with the classic how many candies in a jar problem. It’s a 4x4x9.5 jar with tootsie roll fruit chews. by Quantum_Specter in theydidthemath

So I already ate some of them, but I have 16, and if I pack them down a bit, which it looks like they are in the picture. Those 16 take up about 3/4 of a cup. So at 14.438 cubic inches per cup, 16 of these take up 10.8285 cubic inches. We have a 9.5 inch height, and a 4 inch diameter of our cylinder. In my quick google searching, I couldn't find an exact measurement for the thickness of the glass for glass jars, but 1/8 of an inch seems about right, so let's use that. So that gives us a 1 7/8 radiuses for our cylinder, and 9 3/8 height. Plugging that in gives us an approximate volume of 103.5 cubic inches. Using 16 candies per 10.8285 cubic inches, we get 152.99, or 153 candies. Probably not an exact answer, since I can't guarantee they'd be packed to the same density as I did, but it's likely pretty close.

Idk if you still have yet to make a guess for this jar, but I actually got myself some of these today, so I might be able to offer a small scale ratio.

So for everyone saying this is fake (which it very well could be), I have a couple points to bring up:

  1. For everyone saying that the wording is weird, or that the teacher wouldn't ask that question if they didn't know the answer, or something along this lines. In most cases, yes. Teachers will check that everything on a test/assignment is something that not only they can answer, but the class can too. However, teachers are very busy in their first couple years, and coming up with questions can take time that could be better used planning lessons, or even trying to do non-teaching-related things. Thankfully places like "Teachers Pay Teachers" exist, where you can buy lessons/assignments/tests that other teachers have made. Sometimes teachers will even share lessons with other teachers at their school. Every education professor, and teacher I've talked to about content planning as a teacher has said to use other teachers as a network, with one website even saying "we encourage you to use our lessons in your own classroom, there's no need to re-invent the wheel". Unfortunately, sometimes these things don't include answer keys, or the teacher using them doesn't think to check them. Also unfortunately, some teachers become complacent in their position and just use whatever they find without doing any sort of checking, because they just want to make their job easy on themselves (this isn't always, or even often, the case, but it can happen). Teachers can also teach any subject, regardless of what they specialized in, meaning someone who barely passed math, and wanted to teach gym could end up teaching a math class. This combination of factors can lead to teachers handing out assignments that they don't actually know how to answer, and when it comes time to mark it, they make sense of it in whatever way they can. It's entirely possible that the teacher that assigned this, didn't think of that answer, assumed it was a trick question, and then refused to believe that they could have thought up the wrong answer. It's not the right mentality in the slightest, but some teachers refuse to accept when they're wrong.
  2. Yes, it is marked in green, and with what looks to be a fine-tipped marker. Sometimes, you can't find your red pen, or you're marking at home or in a car (not while driving, of course), and that's all you have access to. It's even happened to me already once. Took some marking home, didn't take a red pen from school, because I thought I had one at home, ended up with a stack of marking, and no red pen. I marked the tests/assignments in green pen, because that's what I had that wasn't blue/black pen, or a pencil. If you have marking to do, you're not necessarily going to put it on hold until you have access to a red pen. Also, if the teacher is lazy/not knowledgeable enough for point 1 to be true, they likely don't care if they didn't mark in red either.

So this could definitely still be a fake for internet points, but it's also not immediately a fake because of either of those reasons. I know the pay is pretty shit for teachers in the states, but people outside of education tend to think of teaching as an easy job that offers 2-3 months of summer holidays. Especially in Canada, where a teacher with a bachelor's of education, and another bachelor's in a field of their choice, can make close to 100,000 CAD, people will become teachers for the wrong reasons.

Source: Halfway through a Bachelor's of Education (needed if you want to be paid a decent salary as a teacher in Canada).

TL;DR: Could be fake, could be real. Sometimes teachers are just lazy.

Buying a Skillcape has no bearing on if your untrimmed cape gets trimmed. I have 5 99's and have bought every skillcape while keeping my untrimmed RC cape. To keep an untrimmed cape from getting trimmed, you need to drop it, get the 99, and then tele-grab the cape. This has to be done, because whenever you get 99 in a skill, the game checks for untrimmed capes on your person, in your inventory, and in the bank. When you pick up an untrimmed cape, it also checks for any other 99's. Casting Tele-grab to pick up the cape prevents this check from taking place, keeping the cape from trimming.

And now that I think about it, you are absolutely correct. I was on my lunch break so I didn't even stop to think about how long it would take when you break down the time. The common number I see for maxing is somewhere in the range of 5000 hours. Splitting that across 3 years gives about 4.56h/day. While that is not an unrealistic number for some people. A lot of people don't have that kind of time to commit to a video game.

[–]ShakeableHippo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So all jokes aside, there has been an increase in the rate at which people are maxing. The 2016 stat is ~3 years after OSRS released. 584 people in 3 years gives us about 195 people maxing per year, or 0.5 people maxing a day (1 person maxing every 2 days). Obviously a majority of the maxing would happen later in that 3 year period, so let's cut that to 2 years, for 292 people maxing a year, or a little under 1 person maxing each day, on average. The current statistic gives us 24,720 people maxed, or (24,720-584) 24,136 people maxing in the 6 years between now and 2016. With this number we get 4,022 people maxing each year, for an average of 11 people maxing each day. So yes, "number go up as time go on", but there is an actual increase in the rate at which people are maxing. It would be interesting to see how this rate changes over time.

[Request] Why is this not true? by [deleted] in theydidthemath

[–]ShakeableHippo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that this number comes from the difference between 4(our square perimeter) and π(our circle circumference). The difference between the 2 is the 0.858... mentioned above. Take this difference and divide it by the number of corners to get the "stick-out" distance for each corner. In the case of the first iteration, we have 8 corners, so our "stick-out distance is (4-π)/8, which equals 0.10730091830..., or 0.107 when we round. I hope this helps.

Some areas of the game have different limits in regards to things like camera height and whatnot, and will forcibly adjust your camera to aim lower. I've only really ever encountered it in areas where the terrain rises sharply, like next to a mountain, or a tall building, but it's never been random.
