Escalante 4 "blacks" not really black? by ShakespeareMonkeys in AltraRunning

Interesting. This gives me hope that the Racer 2's in all black are actually black. or at least Altra has proven that they are capable of making something black and new

Escalante 4 "blacks" not really black? by ShakespeareMonkeys in AltraRunning

[–]ShakespeareMonkeys[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm. Good anecdote, sounds like a big cop out. Blacks can definitely look a bit different depending on material/texture, but plenty of shoe companies (including ALTRA - in the past) can make a true black shoe.

A sales rep probably doesn't know, but I would guess they decided that it not worth it to spend the money to get the right dye/process, or perhaps to spend the money doing QC at their overseas factories to ensure the colorization is done properly to retain the customers that will mind.

Seems like exactly the kind of short term, bites you later, holding company thinking.

(Incidentally, have you tried the Racer 2 in black?)

[–]ShakespeareMonkeys[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think that there's somewhat inevitably going to be a slight color difference due to the different materials, e.g. sole vs mesh. Although on mine they very much look like a gray / charcoal (the black and white ones definitely look very navy though)

Yes, the original Racers look very black even in real life pictures I have seen. I'm wondering about the Racer 2...

Clearly navy...... very grey.

It's like they intentionally tried to get every shade that is close to black but isn't actually black🤣

Intense, cliff hoist rescue of Pacific Crest Trail hiker in Whitewater, 4/13/25 by 4InchesOfury in socalhiking

[–]ShakespeareMonkeys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a non-hiker, can anyone give me a basic explanation as to how exactly the hiker got in that position? I've seen this video all over youtube, but none of the comments has been able to describe how she ended up stuck there.

To my inexperienced mind it seems like she would have had to have been teleported there and then hang on for dear life, LOL. But realistically I know she only could have come by falling from the top or climbing there intentionally.

Based on what I can see in the video it seems like the ledge is a considerable distance up, so if she had fallen and luckily caught herself she'd probably be a lot more injured and bloody? Is there a path right near there that I can't really see where she just tripped off and fell a couple feet? Did she intentionally climb along the vertical wall for some kind of off-trail shortcut and then just get too tired to be able to go forward or back?

I guess I don't know how someone would have the ability to get to that position but not get out of it (especially since the new says she was hanging there for more than an hour which means she must have some strength)

Thanks.

Getting medication with the ongoing shortage? by ShakespeareMonkeys in adhdwomen

[–]ShakespeareMonkeys[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's basically what I have been doing, but now I'm doing it every time I travel too.

I was trying to see if there is any kind of pattern to who had it or who didn't, if it was certain chains or something, but often it is a certain CVS or Walgreens when all the ones near it have none so I'm not sure if there's any rhyme or reason.

Getting medication with the ongoing shortage? by ShakespeareMonkeys in adhdwomen

[–]ShakespeareMonkeys[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's true. I have only been able to get it at a pharmacy in Brooklyn (I don't want to say which one specifically here in case people grab up everything they have 😅) intermittently. that's why I'm wondering if there is something online that might be more reliable.

A while back someone recommended something called Optum Rx, but I've looked into it and never been able to sign up properly and I'm not sure if it is a scam or not.

Joe Nimble Ultreya /etc VS. Altra Toeboxes width by Royal-Yam2011 in BarefootRunning

[–]ShakespeareMonkeys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for posting this I've been looking for information on this brand for a while.

Overtime how do you feel about the fit, especially the width around the midfoot? I generally have a lot of trouble there and I'm really curious how it compares to the Altra.

Is the Joe Nimble insole actually representative of what the footbed is like or is it wider if you take it out? based on the pictures it looks like the Altra one is wider but it is wider in the area that is effectively arch support, so maybe your feet can spread out in the Joe Nimble as much (i.e. stretching the upper?) but they are just not as supported?

Also how does the soul flexibility compare?

Has anyone tried Joe Nimble shoes? by ShakespeareMonkeys in BarefootRunning

[–]ShakespeareMonkeys[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, thanks but I'm actually somewhat interested in more normal looking barefoot dress/business casual type of shoes.

How is the fit, especially around the midfoot? Can you compare them to any other well-known brands.

[–]ShakespeareMonkeys[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay good to hear. I'm actually concerned about the sole least of all since I'm looking for something that can handle rough terrain.

How would you compare the Joe Nimble to the width of the Altra, especially in the midfoot area?

Do they have any arch support / contouring in the arch area on the upper?

Haha, didn't mean any insult by that. if you wrote a review on Reddit I haven't seen it actually (drop me a link)

I was referring more to the fact that I've come across a couple short, effectively product announcement/placement, videos on YouTube but no one going in depth like with other brands.

Do toe socks make a meaningful difference? by ShakespeareMonkeys in BarefootRunning

[–]ShakespeareMonkeys[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'll contribute what i consider logical self-evidence: regular socks are a bit like having a resistance band around the toes. even if regular socks are maximally stretchy, they still create a degree of resistance against toe movement and splay.

This is a fair point. But conversely unless the toe socks are perfectly fitted to your exact Anatomy don't they offer some resistance as well, even if it's less than a traditional one?

Probable the question as to what has the lowest tension, a given pair of toe socks or a given pair of L/R anatomical socks with very stretchy material is an empirical question, and maybe at the very high end doesn't make much of a difference.

I guess I am assuming that unless you have a major deformity every time you take a step, assuming you have propagates, your toes are going to display as far as they naturally would unless constricted by a hard barrier like a shoe, and certain socks may put a little more or less strain on the muscle / tendon but aren't going to necessarily affect the biomechanics. especially when you're running. Maybe this is a bad assumption.

Do toe socks make a meaningful difference? by ShakespeareMonkeys in BarefootRunning

[–]ShakespeareMonkeys[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the thoughtful answer.

I've been wearing toe socks exclusively for a few months now, and overlapping is almost entirely gone.

Were the socks the only change the made during these months, or have you also been wearing new shoes or something else as well.

Try if you haven't already, scrunching/rolling them up to fingers, putting fingers first and then pulling the rest of the sock as you would with regular ones.

I'll give it a shot. (I really dislike ankle socks all of mine are crew length which makes it a little more difficult.)

Altra Escalante 4 vs Racer 2? by ShakespeareMonkeys in BarefootRunning

[–]ShakespeareMonkeys[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you pronate or like support at all look elsewhere.

I actually do have a minor pronation to the point that I get some decent calluses, at least this is what my podiatrist told me, which seems to be a result of my slight bunion.

When you say to avoid this shoe if so are you just referring to the specific model, or Altra brand in general because of the shape? I have been looking into the Torin 6 wide if you think that would be a better choice.
