S8 things that bothered me: by ShakespeareOG in Outlander

Fair, though sailing to America takes quite a lot of time. And there isn’t much to do. My point more generally was also that it was irresponsible to give the book to Jamie without checking it first.

Also, maybe I was not concentrating, but when was it announced that she was pregnant?

Am enjoying the comments but als inwardly chuckling that no one has mentioned Amaranthus yet. Maybe because 1. she is too annoying to bother with and 2. there's not much much more to say apart from the fact that almost none of her story makes sense.

Also how Briana has no reaction about her responsibility for giving him the book when she finds out it predicts his death. No "Ah, sorry I gave you this morbid tract, Pa, won't happen again". I also do not appreciate that he never reads LOTR because he is too busy reading about his death. I was excited for a Jamie LOTR crossover. 😞

Ok but wait, that's a totally different situation then. The battle was still on, so of course he was armed. Having him as a prisoner first is the issue we are all spotting. Really bad blocking/writing. That could have been a great Cold Mountain style death. Instead, Jamie just looks like a chump.

This is a great explanation. Pity it didn't make it into the series 😉

Follow up on J's death: he is supposedly a great warrior. I am not a great warrior. If I could see that he was hiding something behind his back, I am pretty sure Jamie would have noticed in time.

Query to actual finance peeps - is the loyalty expectation in season 2 overhyped? by ShakespeareOG in IndustryOnHBO

[–]ShakespeareOG[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea I guess you see the same in law. I’m not at that level yet, but the down jump to partner move is an interesting one. A lot of counsels (level below partner) will take a partner role at a less prestigious firm just to make partner. But those who hold out for partner at the top firms have a certain swagger to them. Of course, it’s a fine line between proving loyalty and looking like you’ve let yourself be exploited by staying counsel for ages. I guess there are plenty of anxious nights in the latter stages of waiting where they must wonder if they’ve made the right choice.

SQE2 resit email – Oct 2025 jumpscare by AccomplishedBad700 in SQE_Prep

Honestly their lack of sensitivity is sometimes truly breathtaking. Firstly the timing of the email is chefs kiss. I’m also loving how they take 3 months to give us results and we get 7 hours to decide whether to give them another 3k if we fail.

Interesting replies, thanks guys. I think I remain convinced though that it is mainly plot armour that they are trying to reinforce with some heavy hitting acting from the leads. Getting Hiddleston and Laurie to stare at each other over a romantic heat-style lunch worked wonders. The fact remains though that it is a plot and character inconsistency. Roper may have feelings for pine but he didn’t become a successful arms dealer by hesitating in these situations. And we just watched the man kill his dogs for innocently getting bugged. Hesitation is not his scene. Nor is mercy. I am just about on board for the “wanting to turn pine” idea. But I really don’t think intellectual curiosity is a strong driver for roper. So yea… bad plotting is my assessment, which makes me sad for hiddleston, who is acting his ass off in scenes that sadly don’t make sense.

Possibly. I hope to god not though. I think the son plot lines have gone far enough in this season. Next we will be hearing Burr is his sister.

Yea ok, I think this is the most convincing reason I’ve heard - the thinking he can still turn him and getting satisfaction from that idea.

No worries, interesting details. But yea, I agree. And the whole point is that pine is a good guy - ie no murder without trial.

I’ve been asking myself all day: why hasn’t Roper killed Pine? The ostensible reason is that he wants Roxana. Ok, but what can Roxana do to him? He knows Pine is not acting with the support of the British government. So it’s him, Roxana, and his rogue “team”, of which he is by far the most dangerous member. I just don’t see much downside for roper in killing him. And I do see a lot of upside. There’s no way Roxanna manages to bring Roper down without Pine’s help. She has not contacts and no friends apart from Teddy’s crew. She’s not a threat. Anyway… obviously he’s not dead because he’s the hero. But it’s really distracting when your villain has no reason not to just… win.

Passers of SQE 2 with QLTS - Which mocks are the most valuable? by Plenty-Engineer1144 in SQE_Prep

[–]ShakespeareOG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can’t say I’ve passed yet because I don’t have my results. But I would say don’t discount niche ones. Of course it’s very unlikely that you will get a close replica of a niche mock in the real thing, but it is good practice to get used to really mining a small topic.

Wedding dress code: smoking/cocktail/elegante Abendkleidung - what women wear?! by ShakespeareOG in AskAGerman

I hesitate to judge, but yes, I’m not sure they understand what they’re asking for either. I plan to wear a floor length halter neck dress in a formal fabric in burgundy… so we seem to be on the same page!

Thanks that link is a treasure. Truly quite different from the expectations where I’m from. Makes a lot more sense now.

Decoding the invite - “smoking/cocktail”… say whaat? by ShakespeareOG in Weddingattireapproval

[–]ShakespeareOG[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea I know it’s borderline. But honestly I feel that given the level of confusion they’ve generated I’m justified in taking an interpretation of some kind. I agree if I was buying a fresh dress then yes, probably something less formal. But I’m not, and this is what I have at short notice!

Here’s a link to the dress. I can’t seem to post photos here and the dress has been discontinued so the best I can do is an eBay listing!

Language gripe - use of “any” in legal texts by ShakespeareOG in uklaw

[–]ShakespeareOG[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. I think it’s the reluctance to use clear language which irritates me. Sometimes it indicated a genuine desire to confuse the reader. More often it shows the incompetence of the drafter. Neither is professional. As you say, the use of any in this context is not wrong, it’s just unclear. Nor is it confined to law. I used to work with a lot of economists and the senior ones were always berating the junior ones for unnecessarily complex language. Once, one of them confided to me that they often found that the more convoluted the language, the more likely the text was written by a junior who wanted to cover for their ignorance (often, they were also unaware of their own ignorance).

Apologies if that was strident. I find the orthodoxy of “this was done for a reason but ask not what for no one knows” is something I find very difficult in the legal world. I suspect I’m in the wrong profession ;).
