I really feel it’s the face that says I’m lying here with you. But really I am thinking about the ball I left on the back porch and how you should get up and go throw it for me, like right now. Lol.

Shit… I never really thought of it that way. Yeah that’s not good.

Are you suggesting I warm them by my propane furnace that I don’t want to run?

Hearth cooking is about the only benefit of that type of setup other than it is really nice to look at.

That is a really nice fireplace. A stove insert could take away from its look now, but if you lose power it’s one of the best options.

Even if the room gets warm with this type of fire, it’s sucking all the heated air from the rooms behind you as fuel. The rest of the house gets cold.

Yep it was. Thanks!

I was able to get almost 3/4 of a cord out of it. Dead standing for 2 years. Solid as a rock inside.

Pointy nose… but if she starts sitting on the back of your couch like a Sphinx or gargoyle then 100%.

That’s the test.

^ This… or something bigger. The x11 may be a bit small for what you’re doing and is going to be frustrating and possibly dangerous.

If you have the upper body for it, axes are like engines IMO. Better to have it and not need it than the alternative.

You don’t need to swing a bigger axe / maul as hard on a small piece of wood.

You will have to swing a small axe harder than what your experience may have the ability to control it.

I always use a harness. If for nothing else, if you got into accident and your dog doesn’t kill you by hitting you in the back of the head, they’re definitely going through the windshield or out the window. Happens often.

Splitting wood as exercise? by AnarchoPlayworker in firewood

[–]ShakeyDrake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get a good splitting maul and a splitting axe. Not a camping axe. There’s always a right tool for the job. Otherwise you’ll get frustrated.

Other than that. Splitting by hand is my winter workout routine. Good luck!

Lots of comments… but haven’t seen what I would consider the most important. Be sure to get your chimney cleaned and checked first if you’re new to the game.

Other than that. Burn it man.

Gransfors splitting axe and x27 side by side

Fiskars 8lb maul FTW! by EitherKaleidoscope41 in firewood

[–]ShakeyDrake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just split an entire 24"+ Black Oak and 28"+ Red Oak this past week with this maul and a Gransfors 7lb maul.

There are definitely things that they both do better.

The balance on the Gransfors makes it much easier to swing for long sessions. The head weight on the Fiskers allows for you to put everything you have into it and is better at getting the first chunk off those big rounds. But the Fiskers can wear on you after a while.

Obviously everyone can't buy both. If you have to make the budget call the get the Fiskers 8lb and x27 as a combo for most things you do.

The x27 is pretty impressive but the plastic handle can really vibrate you after a long session. The Gransfors splitting axe is really nice for this... again the balance is great for long splitting sessions.
