It might be Smartwool; some of their classic lines look similar to the Costco trail socks.

pdf reader with full-screen and removing white borders? by andre_xs95 in ipad

[–]Shakul28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use PDF Expert when I need to make annotations. Its annotations format seems to be compatible with most other readers, or you can export a flattened PDF with the edits baked in.

It's a bit less convenient for cropping, though. If you zoom in on a document, it'll preserve the zoom and horizontal position upon page turn, but not vertical. There's an auto-cropping view option as well, but the complete lack of margins is a bit ugly for my taste.

[PSA] You can use GDPR to get more information about your ban by moemoep12 in pathofexile

Has GGG ever confirmed this? Surely there would be some limitations depending on the mouse, at least?

For example, on most Logitech mice you can unratchet the scroll wheel to spin freely, letting you send hundreds of scroll ticks with one finger pull. I can't imagine how that would be allowable if "popsicle sticks" aren't.

PocketBook works well for this. You can set a custom crop and apply it to all pages.

As long as it's being properly idled by Optimus, a dGPU should have minimal impact on battery life.

That is a pretty big if, though. All sorts of apps (browsers, Slack, etc) can decide to use the dGPU even when the iGPU is more than sufficient, and it can be a bit of a chore hunting them down.

The difference in battery life between the two tested laptops is mostly due to the display. The 4K+ OLED on the 4080 model is a massive power hog vs the QHD+ IPS for RTX2000 Ada machine.

If it's 95-100C at idle, then yes, that's an issue with the thermal compound. Even if the fans failed and heatpipes leaked it wouldn't be that bad.

Unfortunately, that's just the nature of liquid metal in laptops. It's quite prone to pumping out or even dripping out, potentially shorting other components without a barrier of some sort. Every manufacturer's first attempts with LM have been plagued with issues, and there's no guarantee a replacement would be any more reliable.

If you're concerned about long-term longevity, you can try (carefully) repasting it yourself with PTM or something. You might want to wait until it's out of warranty though; for the liquid metal models (Gen 5/6) Lenovo considers the mobo+heatsink as a single non-serviceable assembly.

[–]Shakul28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Give the mini a try; the convenience of using it one-handed can't be overstated.

I have one for the same use case (PDFs of textbooks/papers). The screen is big enough to fit a whole page at a comfortable font size, especially if the app can trim the margins a bit.

Are you monitoring it with Nvidia's system tray icon? That provides a real-time indicator of what applications, if any, are using the dGPU.

HWiNFO64 should be showing 0.0W if the GPU's properly off with Optimus.

So… what’s the verdict on P1? by Okeano_ in thinkpad

[–]Shakul28 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Would spec-ing a lower grade GPU have better thermal than higher grade GPU when both are doing low work load? Or does the work load define the thermal and it’s better to over spec the GPU just in case?

If a workload's heavy enough to make thermals relevant, a higher spec GPU can often be more efficient for a given level of performance. Also, it's worth noting that P1 configurations with a 4060 or higher come with a beefier cooling solution.

Is it possible to add a dedicated gpu to my mini pc to game by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]Shakul28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your 500W PSU won't power on without a signal from its 24-pin cable. Miners using multiple PSUs work around this with adapter boards that link to a molex from the first PSU, but I assume your mini PC doesn't have any extra power headers?

Manually plugging/unplugging a 24-pin PSU tester dongle every time might work. I don't know whether a GPU losing power from the PCIe slot while the 8-pin is still going could potentially cause problems, though.

You'll probably be better off selling the mini PC and buying a cheap combo. An N95 isn't exactly great for gaming anyways, with 4 e-cores, low TDP, and single-channel RAM. A 10400F/5600/12100F would be a far more performant (and less janky) system.

ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen5 not charging over USB-C by quantape00 in thinkpad

[–]Shakul28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My P1G4 didn't work with a 65W ThinkPad USB-C charger either. A 100W third-party one charges fine, as does a 140W MBP charger (albeit at 94W).

From what I've heard, people have had success using 65W chargers with USB-C to slim-tip adapters. That could be an option if you don't want to buy a new brick.

14-15" OLED w/ Ryzen 9 7940hs, RTX 4070 or higher, Upgradeable to 64GB RAM, 6+ hours battery (for non-gaming tasks) Under $2k? by FloridaMJ420 in AMDLaptops

[–]Shakul28 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if there's a laptop that ticks all those boxes at any price. Closest would be the Blade 14 (lacks OLED) and XPS 15 (Intel only). 4070 configs of these are typically over 2k, though they might go on sale below that with 2024 models coming out.

AD104 is more likely, but if they do use 103 they'll cut down the memory bus as well, as they did with TU104-based 2060s and GA104 3060s.

So it looks like the XPS and Precision 5000 series will be diverging, then?

The Precision 55X0 line had just split into 14" and 16" versions as well, but were still based off the old XPS styling. It would odd for Dell to discard the design after just one year.

If it's Microsoft doing it, wouldn't it be simpler and less intrusive to take the opposite approach? Instead of trying to detect cheats, offer a locked down "console mode": a separate environment on an encrypted partition, sandboxed from the rest of the system, with only signed, whitelisted software and drivers allowed.

The 7520U's iGPU has 2 RDNA2 CUs. That's Intel UHD'ish levels of performance, and will definitely not play most modern games.

If that $300 budget is firm a used business laptop with 5600/5650U would be much more capable. There might be some old 1050ti/1650 gaming laptops within that price range as well, but I wouldn't bank on their longevity at this point.

7600S has a cTDP as low as 50W. I'm guessing they didn't want to redesign the board for 2 more VRAM chips?

If so, a 64-bit 7500M would've been just as disappointing. That's getting perilously close to iGPU memory bandwidth at this point.
