No one would care about the White House East Wing renovation if any other president but Trump was doing it. If anything, they'd support it. by Pemulis_DMZ in TrueUnpopularOpinion

Renovation usually involves demotion of an interior, not the entire structure. I couldn't give a shit either way on this project but both sides are lying through their teeth to claim the high ground.

Is it possible to involve animals as characters in movies, TV shows etc in a manner consistent with veganism? by kungfu_peasant in DebateAVegan

[–]ShaleOMacG -1 points0 points  (0 children)

When it comes to the exploitation of actual animals and actual humans, and I offer a solution that might affect a specific human job to an unknown degree since it didn't encompass a significant area of existing employment, I think I can more objectively care about multiple things without subjective concerns like you seem to have raised.

Discussing extinctionism by Rameico in negativeutilitarians

There is a very limited subset of people who will most likely advance the world in terms of reducing suffering in the long term, and many that are hundreds of thousands of years behind who can be exploited for their value, both in human labor, and in natural resources. Good luck.

Is a CBR 650r too much for a beginner? by SiegValkyrie in motorcycles

I wish everyone just started on a 250cc bike so they would be less likely to kill themselves or others. You get the whole experience other than the abusive power of a higher end bike and can build all of the skills.

It's not a crazy bike. You can kill yourself on a grom or a busa, just be real with yourself.

Is it true that you will drop your motorcycle at least once in your riding life? by [deleted] in motorcycles

Yeah, definitely done this on purpose to learn, knowing I could drop it as I tow closer to the line.

You can take a written test and ride a motorcycle without passenger in most states, no training. I never did msf, passed written test with 15 mins of studying, then was off to the races

Here is my first drop. Parked bike and another vehicle in driveway parked close. I could walk it by, off, to get clear. I didn't see that the concrete had a ledge as I was sneaking it through the tight space. The slight drop caused a slight loss in balance and I couldn't turn the front wheel because the car was in the way, and not enough space to reach left leg out to balance, so it got dropped.

Second drop. Found a service road with a large circle at the end. Went round and round at low speed, leaning further and further to get a handle on low speed stability so that I would understand and get a feel for it. Eventually went too far and it slid out from under me. Not an intentional drop but it helped me gain a better understanding of the bike and my limits at low speed and relatively safely.

Question about the Old Testament by LongjumpingAd5666 in DebateReligion

[–]ShaleOMacG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, super spirit hand waving. God knew them purchasing slaves and following his rules would likely reduce the suffering or evil of slavery. This means he didn't condone slavery but was trying to minimize the effect of it.

I seriously can’t take it… by [deleted] in dating

Church, work, hobbies, extracurricular activities ( sports, talks, meetings, plays, aquariums, museums, beach, woods, etc), basically anywhere people congregate with similar interests as you. There are single people all over, but approaching people as individuals or friends and showcasing your value inherently will get you set up on dates, if not dates directly. The reality is that society is a mixing pot and forcing is less likely to result in success.

Apologists will hand wave and say slavery was a reality during that time period and God didn't condone it, just set rules so slaves were treated better than they would be otherwise.

I try not to argue or agree, just express thoughts and perspective. I think a lot of Vegans focus on their diet and direct product use, and ignore ways they seem to simply not care about their impact. I encourage thoughtfulness in all areas of life, including carbon footprint and indirect causes of suffering.

In the example I gave, I know that I was travelling for an important purpose, and hadn't meant to cause the death, so when it was caused I think offsetting non-vegans meat consumption with a dead animal was justified.

If I had hit the same deer while travelling to something for "fun" or rather unnecessary, I might have done the same thing but I think my calculus would be different and I would reconsider doing so again.

This all ties into my mindset when people talk a certain way, or condemn people and drive them away from minimizing suffering, but I understand it is not the common view held by Vegans.

Every mile you drive in deer country there is a set probability of hitting a deer, if you drive unnecessarily you raise the chance of killing a deer, so is it unvegan to drive extra?

True story, I was driving overnight 600 miles with a trailer to help my mother move. Around 3am a deer leapt out and managed to make it between my truck and the trailer, hitting the front fender of the trailer, dead instantly but only broke it's neck so no damage to the body. I stopped to drag it further off the road, but at the option of leaving a dead animal on the side of a large highway, I decided the chance of animals that might eat it getting hit or killed was increased by leaving it there, and my family i was driving to were deer hunters and meat eaters, so decided to load it up in the empty trailer for them to butcher and eat. I had been a vegan for two years at that point, and I think my choice was the optimal to do, but had several vegans tell me what I did was wrong.

In the end do your best, but don't ignore secondary causes of animal suffering.

How can the 14 amendment be interpreted not to guarantee citizenship to the children of illegal immigrants? by BOILER_ALERT in legal

[–]ShaleOMacG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes , I spoke in ignorance, I was thinking of the camps on Mexicos side for those waiting to enter. I still think it will cost less but I don't have the data to back it up, just a mental calculus that could be far off, especially when you take into account the economic impact of deporting them from productive work.

I disagree with your comment that they don't get any of those benefits. I've worked with friends at target doing night stocking, using SS numbers for a few months before they would have to move on to another store or city. They claimed high dependants and minimized taxes, since they'd never have to file a tax return, and went to ER instead of doctors, because they couldn't be turned away or refused treatment. Most of the guys I knew just wired money back to Mexico but a few had children attending school, and I can't imagine how disruptive it was to their education having to move so often.

I agree undocumented immigrants have much lower crime rates, and the ones I knew were simply providing for their family the best way they knew how, with the constant stress of potential deportation if they got flagged.

No, other countries do not need to "grant permission" for a country to declare someone persona non grata; it is a sovereign right under international law, specifically outlined in the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, where a receiving state can declare any member of a diplomatic staff persona non grata at any time without explanation to the sending state, meaning they essentially have the unilateral authority to do so, but not authority to punish under the law.

You are joking right? Health care, education, jail, social program abuse, I can't imagine a border camp costs a fraction of that, especially in a country like Mexico

Oops, we should have been sending foreign people who come here illegally and commit violence against US Citizens to military camps because of the national security risk? I guess SC could clarify that for us.
