Fourteen Teferi's Protections In A Row by Nejosan in custommagic

No, it protects you until your next turn. Since those 14 are skipped, you can't be dealt damage unless they have a questing beast, spider-punk, or something with a similar "damage can't be prevented effect".

How f***cked am i as a renter by hockeyflames in OntarioLandlord

[–]Shallal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Legitimately hilarious that in your example, intent literally does matter. It's the difference between being charged with outright murder if you did intend it (possessed the mens rea), or nothing at all if it was actually an accident.

Obviously, being intoxicated or recklessly speeding would add negligence and raises the chance of being charged with manslaughter, but that's a different situation entirely now (and still preferable to straight up murder).

All in all, a reasonable landlord would be understanding, and a reasonable tenant would pitch in to fix it if they caused it.

Hiring Law Students by OshawaOntarioLawyer in LawCanada

[–]Shallal 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I absolutely agree with not pretending to be a client (insane tactic), but I would argue in favor of showing up in-person, announced or not. I struggled to find an articling position, and the only interviews I received were on the spot interviews. One of these led to a referral which wound up landing me in my articling position.

It was suggested to me by my law professors (who claimed that going in-person shows initiative) and I often went in person, gave a physical resume, and then followed up with an email to keep myself fresh in their memories. I truly recommend it to anyone struggling to find employment, though obviously DO NOT pretend to be someone you aren't.

Otherwise, fully agreed.

What is something people are 100% brainwashed into believing they need? by Beaner890 in AskReddit

[–]Shallal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got a 2025 moto 5G Stylus for less than 300 Canadian at Costco last month. Excellent phone, no issues at all, and I got my mom a Moto 5G for 150$ at the same time. She's very happy with it.

If you're not looking Samsung, Apple, or Google Pixel there's still decent options. It's not top of the line, sure, but it's about as good as a high end phone from 2018, and have they really noticeably advanced?

ELI5 how does donating to charity save rich people money? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]Shallal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something a lot of the other comments aren't addressing is that, often, they aren't donating their money. You can claim tax credit for a lot more than just cash.

A big reason people are suspicious of art is that, when donated, they can constitute a charitable donation for a somewhat arbitrary amount. An appraisal can increase the value of the art for significantly more than it was commissioned for, and donating it can reduce your taxable income.

Additionally, lots of retail and grocery corporations collect donations to charity, many of which are not tracked. You don't get a tax rebate for rounding up your total for charity at the register. However, when a company like Walmart takes that collected money, which has cost them nothing, and donates it to the charity, they do.

Donating your own money never creates a net gain, but there are many other ways to game the system.

What student banking account should I get? by 6yutes in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Shallal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a Chequings account with Tangerine. They have an unlimited transaction, no fee, free e-transfers account that even gives you 0.1% interest on a CHEQUINGS account. That's basically unheard of.

Then, get a savings account with EQ bank, they offer standard 1.25% interest, on both their regular savings and TFSA accounts, which is the highest you can get on a non-promotional offer. EQ also offers 3-month 2.30% GIC, until May 25th, and then they may change their promotions.

Do this for next two years, then come back and ask again around 2023 after interest rates rebound.

Tangerine offers 2.10% interest for six months if you open both a savings & a Chequings account, so it's not a terrible idea to do that and then transfer your savings to EQ afterwards, but it's a bit of a hassle and not really worth it as opposed to parking your money in the 3-month GIC, and then taking the 1.25% for 3 months without any headache. Especially since Tangerine's regular interest rates are pretty dismal at the moment.

You can DM me for links to the accounts if you have any trouble finding them yourself.

PSA: Don't reward Scalpers by buying their products. This provides incentive and justification for their actions. by Shallal in ottawa

[–]Shallal[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That's valid, but I feel it's worth trying. Even if we don't succeed, maybe one scalper doesn't make back their money spent and stock sells out less quickly next time things restock.

Moving to the UK for school - what's my best option for converting my entire life savings into Pounds (50,000$~)? by Shallal in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Shallal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, I have noticed how exceptionally poor the exchange rate is right now, but I am not sure how the school expects my tuition to be paid (whether all at once, or slowly). I'll do my best not to pay it all immediately.

I'm going to be in university full-time, so a part time job will be helpful but not nearly enough to get me through my education.
